Anime Episodes/Scenes that will make you cry

Sometimes I feel like I need a good cry, but am unable to do so on my own. Crying for any reason is good catharsis, and watching a sad movie or reading an emotional book can help get the waterworks going and make you feel better even if you are crying about something fictional. Here’s a list of some of the top moments in anime that have made me cry!

If you’ve seen these anime, this is a great list of scenes to go back and rewatch if you need a good cry, and if you haven’t seen them, they’re all incredible in their entirety as well! Consider this a rec list too.

Anohana Episode 11 Letter Scene

Whenever I’m feeling down and in need of a good cry, I immediately go find this scene from Anohana on youtube. It never fails to get me crying and honestly at this point I just have a pavlovian response to it and immediately start sobbing before anyone even talks lol. If you know, you know. If you don’t know, watch all of Anohana! (my previous review of it is here)

Violet Evergarden Episode 10

I cried for most of Violet Evergarden tbh, there are a lot of emotional moments, but I felt like I had to choose an episode that really let the waterworks flow. For most of episode 10, the viewer has an suspicion of what’s going to happen, and once that suspicion is confirmed it’s a full on cry fest for the entire end of the episode. (my review of the whole show can be read here)

Your Name mountaintop twilight scene

Your Name is probably the least sad overall compared to some others on this list, but this scene always gets me crying. It’s less of a sad cry and more of a reaction to an emotional moment, as the entire scene leading up to this one is incredibly tense and stressful. (my full review of the movie can be read here)

Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai Episode 3- The World Without You

While this show is generally a comedy, it does have a lot of emotional moments throughout the series. In Episode 3, Mai is faced with the fact that everyone in the world might end up forgetting her. Sakuta’s brave declaration in the schoolyard in an attempt to save her, as well as Mai’s concern about her fate if she is completely forgotten, brought me to tears. (here is an earlier review I wrote about it)

Your Lie in April Episode 22 (letter scene)

Your Lie in April is another show that just makes me an emotional wreck the whole way through, but the final episode really makes sure you can’t get away without crying at least once. It wraps the show up nicely and is incredibly heartbreaking. (my earlier review of YLIA can be read here)

If you aren’t much of a crier and don’t think these will work for you, that’s ok! These are still great series to watch regardless. Thanks for reading,

Top 5 Anime (I watched) in 2019 (cont.)

Number 4: Rascal Does Not Dream of Bunny Girl Senpai

**mild spoilers**

I was very, very hesitant to watch this anime, mostly because of the title (I mean, come on). I’m not a fan of Harem anime on principle, and all the pictures and promo were really selling it as a Harem. But I’m pleased to say I was pleasantly surprised at how GOOD this anime was.

I was not expecting an anime with the words “Bunny Girl” in the title to be primarily about dealing with the physical manifestations of teenage problems and insecurities. This was such a unique and interesting concept that I was hooked as soon as I realized that this was the focus.

In addition, all of the female characters have a different, unique relationship with the protagonist Sakuta; this isn’t a harem anime, so unlike what I was anticipating when starting the show, they weren’t all in love with him. The character he ends up dating, Mai, is actually very aloof and emotionally distant, so even though she has feelings for Sakuta she isn’t completely obsessed with gaining his affection like a typical girl in a Harem anime.

Plus, Sakuta remains dedicated to Mai from the beginning, even when other characters expressed romantic interest in him. That was so different from other anime I’ve seen where multiple girls are throwing themselves at the (usually generic/boring) male protagonist, and the entire plot is about which girl he ends up choosing.

It’s definitely not a perfect show, and it still has its fair share of fan service, but I’m really glad that a show marketed as Harem ended up having this much substance. I hope people who watched this show just for the cute girls actually ended up getting something out of the story as well!

Favorite Character Shoutout: Futaba

While all the characters suffering from ‘puberty syndrome’ have unique relationships with Sakuta, I think my favorite has to be with Futaba. It’s so refreshing to see a healthy friendship between a male and female character that doesn’t eventually dissolve into romance, and I loved that they were able to comfortably talk with each other about their own individual romantic relationships and feelings.

What a unique show!! If you haven’t seen it (and still read this despite the mild spoilers haha oops) I would highly recommend giving it a shot. Thanks for reading!

Cheers,
