Anime Rec List: Seinen

Most people are familiar with the anime genres of Shounen and Shoujo, but Seinen is another genre generally aimed at older (male) audiences. This often means that there’s more violence, adult themes, or that the topics are more serious. Here are some of my favorites!

(note: these are all seinen according to MyAnimeList. If you don’t think some of these should count as seinen, take it up with MAL not me)

Erased

Thanks for reading! Let me know if you watched any of these because of my recommendation. I hope you enjoy!

Top 5 Anime I watched in 2020

I watched A LOT of anime this year, as I’m sure many of us did. I bet some of you even started getting into anime this year, which is awesome! I decided to make a short list of my favorite anime that I watched in 2020!

(**btw, not all of these came out in 2020)

5. Monster

Monster is a really old show, and I was initially put off by its outdated art style. However, the story is so strong and compelling that the way the characters are illustrated becomes the least of your concerns. I’d highly recommend this one if you like suspense and drama, I rarely see it discussed enough.

4. Madoka Magica

It took me a while to finally give Madoka Magica a shot, because I didn’t really know what it was about and (at first glance) it looked like any other magical girl shoujo. However, as everyone who’s familiar with it knows, this show is not what it seems and I was so pleasantly surprised at what it turned out to be.

3. Violet Evergarden

I’ve written a few posts about how much I love Violet Evergarden, and it’s no surprise that it made it onto this list. I’ve never cried harder and more frequently at an anime than I have at this one, and trust me I cry at anime a lot. Violet is an excellent character and the show is at its strongest when it hits you where it hurts.

2. Weathering With You

Weathering With You is a film made by Makoto Shinkai, director of 5 Centimeters per Second, Garden of Words, and Your Name. I am the biggest Your Name fan (and imo it deserved every bit of hype that it got) so naturally I was closely following Weathering With You’s release with anticipation. I actually saw this one in theaters and while I don’t think it’s necessarily as iconic as Your Name, it definitely stands on its own two feet and it holds a special place in my heart.

1. Kaguya-sama: Love is War

And finally, my favorite anime I watched this year was definitely Love is War. I was not expecting to love it as much as I did, but I came away from both seasons of this show with a new favorite comedy and romance story. The characters are flawed yet lovable, and all very unique compared to other characters in their genre. I even started reading the manga, which is just as good if not better. I’d highly recommend this show if you like comedy!

Thanks for reading, and an extra special thanks for reading all of my anime posts in 2020. Happy New Year!

Best Anime OPs Part 2

I’ve already made a list for the Best Anime OPs, but since then I’ve watched more anime as well as looked back on some older ones, so I finally felt like I had enough to make a second list!

Evangelion OP (Cruel Angel’s Thesis)

I just got around to watching Evangelion recently aka I watched the entire thing in 3 days, which meant that this was on repeat in my brain for approximately 72 hours straight. And even though I’m kind of sick of it atm, It’s clear why this song is widely considered to be one of the best OPs/OP songs of all time.

Kaguya-sama: Love is War OP 1

I’m a big fan of Love is War as a show regardless, but this song has great vibes and the visuals are a beautiful trippy mess (inspired by the opening credits to some of the older James Bond films, actually)

Keep Your Hands off Eizouken! OP

Objectively the most popular OP of the Spring 2020 anime season, Eizouken’s opening is such a fun bop and the iconic poses of the three main characters became a redraw meme within artists’ circles.

Your Lie in April OP 1

Your Lie in April is one of my favorite shows, and this OP is comprised of beautiful watercolor stills in between really impressive, fun animation. Not to mention Hikaru Nara by the band Goose House is just a genuinely good song.

The Promised Neverland

The Promised Neverland opening has an awesome song, but it also manages to not spoil anything about this super tense mystery show.

Thanks for reading!

WYSW: Love is War

*why you should watch*

Kaguya-sama: Love is War is, imo, one of the best comedy anime besides Saiki K and Monthly Girl’s Nozaki-kun.

And yet, I also think it’s one of the best romance anime. As the viewer, you really get to understand why these two like each other and how their personalities complement each other.

I usually don’t get into the characters in WYSW reviews, but considering the entire premise of this anime surrounds the protagonists’ interactions with each other I figured it was the only way to do this.

Essentially, Shinomiya Kaguya (vice president of student council) and Miyuki Shirogane (president of student council) both have a huge crush on each other, but are both too stubborn/prideful/embarrassed to make the first move.

Kaguya tries to over-prepare for her interactions with the President, but it pretty much always backfires on her. Due to being extremely wealthy and from a well-established family, she has some anxieties about her image and how people perceive her, as her actions will undoubtedly reflect on her family as well. She is very calculating and cunning, but also tends to get very jealous/possessive.

Shirogane, in comparison, is pretty good at thinking on the fly but can also be very oblivious and lacks some emotional intelligence (we stan a dumbass king). He, too, has a lot of anxiety about his image, however it is due to the fact that he comes from a poor background and works very hard to be seen as ‘good enough’ by his wealthy and prominent classmates. He is very book smart and is at the top of their class.

Essentially, these two calculating and intelligent individuals play 4D-chess to try and influence the other into asking them out (because being the first to make a move signifies weakness, clearly). I’ve heard this anime being compared to Death Note in terms of the level of mind games.

Some of the mind games are obviously exaggerated for comedy, but honestly, a lot of their thoughts are like what normal overly-anxious high schoolers think about their crushes. “if I say that, she’s going to think I’m weird!” “If I ask him for his phone number first, he’s going to think I’m creepy!”

This one doesn’t really involve any calculating mind games, but one of my favorite scenes is when the secretary (Chika) makes Kaguya and Shirogane both wear cat ears for a costume event, and they freak out so much about how cute the other person looks that they start acting really standoffish to hide their pleasure. Eventually Chika gets disturbed by their odd behavior, and makes them take the cat ears off (to both of their disappointment).

While Shirogane and Shinomiya are definitely the stars of the show, the secretary and treasurer are great additions to the ensemble and add unknown variables to the president/vp’s interactions with each other.

Apparently, a second season is coming this year, which I am very excited about! Definitely watch Kaguya-sama: Love is War if you like romance, comedy, or if you just enjoy fun.

Thanks for reading!
