Great question! I don't know if I've seen too many explicitly "horror" anime (I prefer psychological thriller which is more common imo) but I have a few in mind that might work for you.
Perfect Blue is what immediately came to mind, it’s psychological but it's a genuinely excellent movie and is definitely extremely disturbing on a lot of different fronts.
Akira is pretty popular for being a well written and animated story but it's also technically categorized as horror. If you haven't seen it yet I'd recommend it anyway, but if you enjoy gory/scary stuff it should fit your taste even more.
Parasyte the Maxim is also categorized as horror although I personally don't consider it too scary, but it is definitely extreme body horror if that's what you're into.
The low hanging fruit I guess I could say are the Promised Neverland and Death Parade; both very good (barring TPN s2....) but pretty well known already and not necessarily 'scary' either.
As for ones I haven't seen, I've heard a lot about Higurashi and Devilman Crybaby but I haven't actually watched those so if you give those a shot take my recommendation with a grain of salt.
