This is a really good thread from mastodon about the counter culture scenes of the 1980s and 90 and how they were destroyed and what we can do to rebuild them.
radio free fedi community faircamp
Welcome to the radio free fedi community faircamp. Faircamp is an open tool for generating clean static sites for artists or labels to offer their music for preview and/or download on the hosting of their choice. With the recent sale of Bandcamp to predatory VC extractive vultures, and the main move to finalise that sale was to fire all the recently unionised staff, the writing is on the wall for the last least worst option for relatively popular and trusted reach and discovery to enter a spiral of behaviour that will not be comfortable for many artists or supporters. To that end, here is an option for members of our RFF community who may not want or be able to self-host their music and/or would like something that is a simple, tidy, open and not walled garden or metrics driven home to offer their music to supporters. You can fully preview tracks, share links, embed tracks and based on the artist's choice of settings freely, honesty box sale/donate, or via code download non-DRM forever files in mutliple formats. DM the station @[email protected] if you would like to be setup with this faircamp model. All you need to do is provide some flac or wav files, cover art, artist links and release info as plain text to us and we have a process to handle all the file movement and the faircamp config. It is quite not painful. We have some funds donated by lovely members of the RFF community specifically for artists who may need help with a solution like this and may be in no position to help with setup or a small monthly contribution toward upkeep. So please reach out!
This is not a transaction based shop nor a streaming platfrom nor federated, nor an all encompasing social platform. Rather, it is a clean place to preview music and download in useful formats. The artist can be comfortable the platform is doing nothing weird with their work and the users can appreciate there is no data being collected, no tracking, no metrics, no google, nothing. The only 3rd party scripts you might encounter are from donation widgets/links to to support the artists via liberapay, ko-fi, stripe, etc. Please respect artist's licenses and if you have the means please donate or support the artists via the links they provide. Stay awesome out there.
Recently, WordPress announced official support for their ActivityPub plugin. Just install it, and it’ll turn your WordPress site into a Fediverse server.
And, listen, for anyone running a webcomic, this is a very cool idea!
If you have your own site, you probably have an array of social-media accounts where you post update notices, which is good for your reach but a pain to keep up. So, what if, instead of your readers on Twitter following your Twitter account, they could just follow your comic site from their Twitters? Or their Tumblrs, or their Instagrams, or whatever else. You don’t need to crosspost on all the sites — you don’t even need an account on all the sites — they act like RSS readers that can all pick each other up directly.
Australians have resoundingly rejected a proposal to recognise Aboriginal people in the country’s constitution and establish a body to advise parliament on Indigenous issues.
Saturday’s voice to parliament referendum failed, with the defeat clear shortly after polls closed.
To succeed, the yes campaign – advocating for the voice – needed to secure a double majority, meaning it needed both a majority of the national vote, as well as majorities in four of Australia’s six states.
We have entered the chaos era of social media in America. Sociologists would call it a “legitimation crisis”: It’s what happens when people lose faith in social institutions during periods of rapid change, including, crucially, institutions devoted to communication. Consider the lightning-fast transformation of Twitter, where six months ago journalists from national newspapers were trading barbs with politicians and experts, and today CEO Elon Musk changes the site’s rules on a whim, often making it impossible to know who is a legitimate source and who is an impostor.
The book fair will run over the weekend of 4th/5th November. During that weekend, authors and publishers will post about their books

with all the tumblr change news, seems like a good time to share these links again
here’s mastodon too https://joinmastodon.org/
the town square is a terrible metaphor for social media
As #Twitter continues to implode, my advice is to try #Mastodon again, if you tried it before and gave up. This time, follow these three simple rules:
1. Start with a good server. I love zirk-dot-us which is my server. (I'm @kerim)
2. Use a good third party client app. I love Ivory for iOS. Tusky and Fedilab are popular for Android.
3. Use hashtags. A lot. There is no algorithm for Mastodon so you need to follow hashtags to discover stuff, and use hashtags so you can be discovered.
watching reddit go into a full death spiral is like watching the specifically trans equivalent of the library of alexandria go up in flames
like yes reddit is also the only place on the internet you can get an actual answer to any question in general. but it’s also a huge centralized community database about which surgeons will fuck you over, who takes what insurance, which doctors you can trust, how to write a template therapist’s letter, insurance appeals, peer support, questions that feel too stupid to ask anywhere else, diy guidelines, “hey this is embarrassing but,” finding trans people in your area, explaining why you need PTO without getting way too personal about it, safety tips, et cetera you get the picture
Someone on trans Reddit just bought the url transgender.org and have put out a call for folks to help turn it into a replacement (and more). Here's a link on r/ftm but it's open to everyone
not sure how many have or will move over here but there is a fediverse alternative to reddit called lemmy
here’s a migration list being made
