You know, back in the day when Goku wasn’t revealed to be an alien and radically changing everything about the series, Yamcha used to be a real bad-ass at times on Dragon Ball.
DBZ just made him the butt monkey, and he hasn’t lived that down since. Shame.

The TRUE lead of the Dragon Ball Franchise.
Don’t @ me on that one. She’s the catalyst of every major action in the title.
Is it wrong of me to think of Dragon Ball not Goku’s story per se, but Bulma’s journey into womanhood? Aside from Goku, she is the catalyst of everything that happens, and her friendships and relationships change the world for the better. She seemingly assembled the world’s greatest fighting team in her teens while searching the globe for dragon balls, created technology that defied logic and traversed worlds, not to mention repurposing alien tech for her own personal use, seemingly tempered the anger of an alien prince and gave birth to their children (the eldest went back and forth through time defeating villains like Freeza and Cell), knew who the mastermind behind the android threat, aligned with space peace officers, and saved the Earth from being destroyed by the God of Destruction himself by offering him fine cuisine and desserts.
Bulma did all that. So glad Super didn’t keep her as some doting, elderly crone and proving older women still have a lot of life and action remaining in them.. And she should be respected as the heroine that she is.
Sometimes, I forget exactly how “smol” Krillin and Goku were in Dragon Ball.

I've always loved how much detail Akira Toriyama gave to his drawings. Definitely working on that.

(Yeah, I'm not a fan of Dragon Ball Z, but the manga is a thing of beauty. Akira Toriyama's the Hergé of my generation. Don't know Hergé? You should.)
Found these Americanized redesigns for the cast of Dragonball Z by Michael Lee Lunsford. I love them, but I’m always going to be a sucker for Great Saiyaman and Android 18.
Nothing beats the Toriyama originals, but these are pretty nice updates.

Am I the only Toonami, or even the only anime fan, that never cared much for DBZ anyway?
Nah. I thought Dragon Ball Z was . . . alright. Way too many drawn out battles, and too much "we gotta train to beat the big bad guy" episodes.
Honestly, I love Dragon Ball more than Dragon Ball Z. That's more of an adventure series with an equal mix of comedy, suspense, and action. Quality show. Goku taking on (and defeating) the Red Ribbon Army is probably still one of my favorite stories in any media.
What was your favorite program on Toonami?
A toss-up between Justice League Unlimited, Outlaw Star, and Dragon Ball. JLU showcased the awesomeness of the DC Universe without a heavy focus on Batman. Outlaw Star was just a fun adventure series (even though Whedon will deny it, there's kind of an Outlaw Star feel in Firefly, especially in both shows' protagonists), and Dragon Ball showed off how Goku grew to become the hero of Earth in a great mix of comedy and martial arts action.
OH! And Sailor Moon S. I can understand why people loved that season so much. New characters and relationships, Stephanie Beard was perfect as Rini. And Sailor Moon actually proving that she's the hero she was meant to be.
Confession time. I loved Dragon Ball more than Dragon Ball Z.
