~Assistant Baker~

You were beginning to doubt your own abilities when you realized just how much left there was to be done. You'd wanted to do something positive here lately rather than sitting at home. Therefore, you took it upon yourself to take over some volunteer work in the city. There was nothing to the soup kitchens or the handing out water bottles at the marathon races, no. But signing up to make a shit ton of cupcakes for a charity bake sale? That might have been your crowning 'I shouldn't have done this' moment.
You sigh and use your arm to wipe the thin sweat covering your forehead. The kitchen was sweltering due to your oven working overtime. You turned to open the nearest window and when you turned back around, a familiar face was sneaking his finger into the mixing bowl abandoned on the counter. You smirk and clear your throat causing him to jump slightly. You cross your arms and smile at him. "Sorry..." he mumbles while looking away sheepishly for a moment. "Tabe why don't you stick around and lend me a hand?" He'd instantly gotten excited at the idea of that. Usually when you asked him for his help in the kitchen, it was so he could taste everything before it was finished being made. Imagine his surprise when he realized it was to actually assist in the cooking part!
He was hesitant at first with the panic of possibly ruining something stuck on his mind weighing him down slightly. You were always so kind and patient with someone like him. You took your time to gently move behind him and guide his hands in the position they needed to in to get the job done. You began by letting him open a new box of cupcake mix while you opened the paper sleeves and lined the clean pan you had available nearby. Once done with that, you smiled and turned the box around and pointed at the instruction, watching patiently as his eyes skimmed the box. He looked over his shoulder at you and nodded as he carefully began to follow the instructions. Soon your hands left him alone and he took over for himself. Within the time of an hour he'd gotten it down to a T. You had to admit things ran much smoother when you had two people in the kitchen rather than one. Perhaps the phrase 'two heads is better than one' rings truer than you previously thought!
It was probably around midnight or 1:00 a.m. that you finished everything up. He helped you wrap it all up for tomorrow. You had obviously noticed his yearning written all over his face as he put away the delicious treats without so much as a small nibble. You weren't going to let your little helper go to bed empty handed of course. You'd tapped lightly on his shoulder and chuckled at the way his face lit up when you presented him with one of the cupcakes. You'd even taken just a second to add his favorite flavored icing across the top of it. "Enjoy it, you worked hard after all." You smiled warmly at him. He pulled you into a tight hug for a moment just to revel (or bask perhaps) in your presence not just in the moment but in his life hopefully forever. He didn't feel as though he deserved you and sometimes tended to fight with his troubled silent thoughts that maybe someday you'd realize this and leave him behind. It was small moments like this you spent reconnecting with each other that surely reassured him at the end of the day.
