If you’re one of the people who’ve read the book, you probably know a little of Owens’ romantic backstory, like the huge boost her debut got when Reese Witherspoon, the Oprah of our time, selected it for her book club. Or the fact that while Crawdads is Owens’ first novel, it’s not her first book. And then there’s the 22 years she spent in Africa with her husband, Mark, living close to the land and working in wildlife conservation. Delia and Mark wrote about those experiences in three memoirs. But what most of Crawdads’ fans don’t know is that Delia and Mark Owens have been advised never to return to one of the African nations where they once lived and worked, Zambia, because they are wanted for questioning in a murder that took place there decades ago. That murder, whose victim remains unidentified, was filmed and broadcast on national television in the U.S.
So apparently someone is just blatantly plagiarizing Courtney Milan!?!
That’s pretty dang blatant. 😮
It’s even worse this morning!
Pajiba has a good summary up. There are many authors who’ve been stolen from and last I saw, the culprit claimed she paid someone on Fiverr to ghostwrite these books so it’s not her fault.
I’m gonna go with “If you’re getting your ghostwriters from fucking Fiverr, it’s definitely your fault.” Come on now.
I’m still not over that this plagiarizer used Courtney Milan’s The Duchess War. That’s actually one of the books I’ve yet to read from her, but from what I’ve seen, it’s one of her most popular titles. It’s certainly the first Milan book a lot of people have read. I don’t understand how she thought no one would ever notice.
An editor for the plagiarizer’s book has also spoken up. When the book was given to her, it was messy and she was told it was like that due to mistakes from a previous editor. This was one of her first paid gigs as an editor, so I think she was taken advantage of due to her starting her career.
Serruya does not sound like an all-around great person, let me tell you.

I’ve been meaning to read Gloria E. Anzaldúa for a while now, and finding out her birthday is a day after mine means that she is definitely on my summer reading list!
How have you not read Gloria by now?!?! Even my overworked ass took the time to read her.
I know, I know, it’s embarrassing, but I have been bad about reading stuff the last few years and I’m making up time for it! So many books, so little time!
