So it should be pretty obvious that I love Thor. He has quite honestly become the character I love most from anything I have ever come across, and instead of my feelings cooling over time, I can say that I love him more passionately today than I did when I began this journey…into mystery. Yes, feel free to shoot me for that one. I’m not even sure I can articulate why I love him so much, but I’ll try.
I love Thor because he’s flawed. He can be moody. He’s often selfish. He’s never quite lost that touch of arrogance. He’s intelligent but he can be quite short sighted. He’s quick to anger. He can be judgemental. He makes mistakes. He’s an immortal god who has a breadth of experience so vast, the human mind can’t fully comprehend it, and yet he’s never lost these touches of imperfection. But, he’s not just these flaws. He can be selfish, but Thor can also be unfailingly kind and generous and is never afraid to give all of himself for a cause he believes in. He can be arrogant, but he’s also shown vulnerability and that even he feels moments of self doubt and knows what it is like to never measure up to someone’s expectations. He is quick to anger, but he is also quick to forgive. He’s incredibly loyal to his friends and loved ones, often to his own detriment. He’s learned that his actions have consequences and what it is like to have the weight of responsibility resting firmly on his shoulders. He’s unmeasurably strong and can actually be incredibly terrifying, but he’s also been weak and small. Because of that he doesn’t turn away those who are weak and small, but goes out of his way to help them. He isn’t afraid to to be emotional. And yeah, sometimes he seriously fucks up, but he never gives up. He never stops trying.
I love Thor because he has been through so much pain and he’s never let it stop him. It hasn’t tainted his belief that the universe is a vast and magical place and that life is a gift to be treasured and experienced as deeply and as intensely as you can. He’s been though so much and it’s never killed his enjoyment of life and adventure and the company of his friends. He’s never lost his sense of fun and merriment.
I love Thor because he continues to love Loki, in spite of all of the shit Loki has put him through, because Thor’s heart really is that big and good that that doesn’t matter. Loki is his brother and Thor loves him. These are unmutable facts of Thor’s universe, and there is nothing Loki can do to convince him otherwise. I love that Thor will always be Loki’s saving grace.
I love Thor in all his incarnations, from 616 and the comics, to EMH and all of the cartoons, to the MCU and Chris Hemsworth’s awesome, charming and nuanced portrayal of our thunder god.
For someone who is quick to point out that he’s not human, Thor’s often the most human character in the story and the one I can relate to the most and sometimes the character I wish I could be more like.
Thor’s just the best.
