New Fic: Lessons in Time of COVID (1/4)

Title: Lessons in Time of COVID Fandom: The Untamed | MXTX Pairing: Lan Zhan/Wei Ying Rating: Explicit Notes: A Wangxian fic! Yay! Important notes are on the Ao3 page

#

May 2021 - Chicago, IL

“Dude. What the fuck kind of crisis requires my actual physical presence at eight o’clock in the morning?”

Wei Ying shoves his hands under his thighs to keep himself from flailing and looks at Nie Huaisang, his best friend. Who will probably be his ex-best friend after Wei Ying tells him what he needs to tell him. Fuck.

“Okay,” Wei Ying says and wonders if he’s being dumb. Maybe it’s not as big a deal as he’s making it out to be. Nie Huaisang will probably laugh it off and Wei Ying will buy him an expensive coffee that’s more sugar than caffeine and they’ll go about their respective Sunday mornings. “So here’s the thing, you know how a lot of people were all reflective and shit because of isolation and everything?”

This is only the second time Wei Ying has met with Nie Huaisang in person since they both got fully vaccinated. Still masked, of course, they’re still in public and give a shit about other people, but Wei Ying is no longer afraid to give hugs to certain people and it’s glorious.

“Like how I decided to go back to bisexual from pansexual because fuck you, bisexual means more than one gender and isn’t transphobic like some people like to claim?”

on this fine saturday morning I'm thinking about the burial mounds arc again and how the official translation doesn't seem to fully capture the sacrilege of 亂葬崗 which is a mass grave where you dump bodies without the respect they deserve (i.e. nameless. think mass death from massacre and plague and other unclaimed bodies in general)

(亂 luan means messy/chaos which is a key word here)

that wen qing and her family were able to make a name and a life for themselves at a mass grave, however ephemeral that was, just hits that much harder

the significance of the number 3 as it relates to xie lian and hua cheng has been widely noted (i.e. 3 ascensions, hua cheng's name san lang, the 33 gods he challenged just to name a few). hua cheng's title 血雨探花 is officially and literally translated as crimson rain sought flower* but I'd like to point out that 探花 is a title from the imperial examination (科舉 ke ju) that originated around the tang dynasty. the rankings are 狀元 (zhuang yuan for 1st), 榜眼 (bang yan for 2nd), and 探花 for 3rd

*based on what I've seen on tumblr. i didn't read the english translation
