Eleanor of Austria’s name had been linked to Francis I’s for several years prior to their engagement. If we are to believe what Henry VIII wrote in the instructions for his ambassadors to Charles’s court, the French King entertained hopes of marrying Eleanor as early as February 1518, when his wife, Claude, was pregnant and it was believed she might die during childbirth. The following excerpt is interesting and worth quoting at some length:

“When the ambassadors have an opportunity of speaking to the King [Charles of Spain] alone, they shall tell him that Francis is not much attached to his Queen [Claude], who is of small stature and not beautiful, and as she is now with child there may be some danger in her delivery; on which account Francis, hearing of the singular beauty of the Lady Eleanor, Charles’s eldest sister, and considering her prospects in relation to the succession of Spain, is endeavouring to prevent her being married into Portugal, that if his own Queen die he may marry her . . . The King [Henry VIII] therefore urges Charles to give up the French marriage, and ally himself without loss of time with the house of Portugal, or elsewhere, so that he may shortly have an heir.”

This report seems to have been Henry VIII’s cunning way of dissuading Charles from the French alliance he was contemplating at the time. Death in childbirth was always a possibility, especially considering Queen Claude’s ill health, and rumours about the risk of her death during labour circulated before she gave birth to her first child in 1515. In 1518, however, Claude was pregnant for the third time and had successfully undergone two labours in the past; for Henry to claim that Francis was hoping for his wife’s death in childbirth was merely a tactic to rush Charles into concluding the alliance with Portugal. Henry also cunningly exploited Francis’s extramarital affairs to claim that he was not very devoted to his wife, but this was not the case. Francis had mistresses, but he treated Claude with utmost respect and knew that marriage to her was politically very important as she was the former King’s daughter. Had there been no Salic law in France, Claude could have been Queen in her own right.

Tudor’s Week, Day Six: Favorite Couple - Jane Seymour and King Henry VIII
“Just like Anne before her, Jane refused to become the king’s mistress but, unlike her, did so sweetly and self-effacingly. Probably even the Boleyns did not know exactly when Henry became besotted with the woman who was such a contrast to the spirited Anne, but Jane was on the scene by the end of February, when the king made her brother, Edward, a gentleman of the privy chamber. […] ***It was a performance worthy of Katherine in her youth.*** On hearing of it, Henry declared how Jane ‘had behaved most virtuously’, and from now on he would visit her only in the presence of her relatives. Naturally, the carefully tutored Jane declined this too. And, equally naturally, Henry admired her virtue even more.” - Hunting the Falcon: Henry VIII, Anne Boleyn and the Marriage That Shook Europe

⋅˚₊‧ 𐙚 ‧₊˚ ⋅ "Am I not a man like others?"⋅˚₊‧ 𐙚 ‧₊˚ ⋅

"At last, wishing to turn the conversation, the King said that he wished to ensure the succession to his kingdom by having children, which he had not at present, and upon my remarking to him that he had one daughter, the most virtuous and accomplished that could be thought of, just of suitable age to be married and get children, and that it seemed as if Nature had decided that the succession to the English throne should be through the female line, as he himself had obtained it, and therefore, that he could by marrying the Princess to some one secure the succession he was so anxious for, he replied that he knew better than that; and would marry again in order to have children himself. And upon my observing to him that he could not be sure of that he asked me three times running: "Am I not a man like others?" and he afterwards added: "I need not give proofs of the contrary, or let you into my secrets," no doubt implying thereby that his beloved Lady is already in the family way."
