Okay, maybe an unpopular opinion, but I feel like it actually made sense for the dragons to leave. Not only did Hiccup say goodbye to Toothless for Toothless’ safety, but he did it for the safety of his people. Yes, they’ve managed to defeat every enemy that’s ever come after them because of the dragons, but it’s happened to them multiple times, and while they lived with the dragons it was going to keep happening. He made the choice for Toothless and he made the choice for his people. Just because they were able to eliminate every threat sent their way doesn’t mean it came without a cost. It doesn’t mean that more threats wouldn’t come their way because of the dragons. The elimination of one threat doesn’t mean the elimination of all. Defeating Grimmel is just… defeating Grimmel. There are probably more people out there willing to do Hiccup and his people harm because of their lifestyle and their dragons, and sending the dragons to their own safe place away from the humans also guarantees the safety of Berk.
