In 1997, 14-year-old Nathan Zohner got 43 out of 50 9th graders to vote in favor of banning dihydrogen monoxide, also known as water. The hoax was a science fair project, which he titled ‘How Gullible Are We?’ He not only won the science fair, but also inspired the term ‘Zohnerism,’ defined as ‘the use of a fact to lead a scientifically ignorant public to a false conclusion.’ Source Source 2 Source 3

ADVICE FOR PEOPLE WHO ARE NOT HAVING A GOOD DAY:

  • wait until it gets dark and make tea or coffee or hot chocolate, or if it’s too hot outside make yourself a healthy smoothie with your favorite things in it at any point during the day
  • put on your favorite underwear, it helps, trust me, it’s an old family secret (i’m not kidding)
  • if you have a pet, play the “how many things can i stick on you until you move or get mad” game (bonus points if they fall asleep, extra bonus points if a family member sees you and tells you to quit it, extra double ultra points if they join in)
  • rip a peice of paper into as many little pieces as you can
  • go to animeseason.com and click “random anime” until you see one that looks completely ridiculous (or actually good) and watch the first episode. repeat if it sucked or if you get bored halfway through
  • spend at least an hour making a music playlist for how you feel right now and save it for now or when you feel a bad mood rise again
  • curl up in bed and cover yourself with blankets and pillows and put in music and just lay there for a while (sleeping is also good)
  • eat everything
  • drink lots of water
  • it’s okay bad moods don’t last forever!!!!!! i promise!!! you will be yourself soon and there are people who love you very much, don’t be afraid to reach out to them
  • you are lovely
  • eat lots of bananas

here are some more friends

  • i bet there is still a box of crayons in your house somewhere (if not you can get them cheap during back-to-school sales); find them and use them (maybe while watching ridiculous anime)
  • sunshine if you can manage it or just a sun lamp trust me it matters more than you think especially in winter
  • hugs even if they are stuffed animals or your pet or your pillow whatever is on hand
  • if you’ve got a favorite lotion/soap/thing that is scented use it liberally
  • cry if you need, if it doesn’t start by itself or if you don’t want to attract attention put on a sad movie so you have an excuse
  • write this down to pull out on future bad days:
  • it is okay to have a day where you don’t get things done
  • it is okay not to have a reason for feeling bad
  • taking care of yourself is a worthwhile use of time
  • if you still don’t feel better it is not your fault (and it is okay to ask for help)

The images are of a reply from Lemony Snicket, an author known for his A Series of Unfortunate Events, a book series aimed at older children. The reply is written in the voice of his narrator character. The narrator shares his pen name and frequently writes in vague references to the reader, who is included in the mystery as the correspondent to whom Lemony Snicket is sending his information.

The reply is titled “via VERY FAST DELIVERY.” The letters V.F.D. play a big part in the series. The note reads:

 nly two things are more hazardous than writing to me during these times. They are eating mussels in July and receiving a rep y from me, both of which may leave you feverish, shaking, and alone.
However, it c n also be very uncomfortable to wait day a ter day for a reply that never comes, as I have since my last letter to a dear frie d.
Consequ ntly, I  m sending you a lette  containing Very Few Details.
Accept my hum le thanks and fervent wishes for your continued safety, as well as the safet  of the familiar-looking neighbor with whom you have never spoken.

Several letters from this note are deliberately missing. If the reader wrote down each letter that was missing, they would spell out: OLAF NEARBY

Count Olaf is the major villain in the series. Lemony Snicket is writing in code, suggesting that he can’t be candid because Olaf may be observing him or the reader. Creepy!

This isn’t a joke. It is just cute.

Context: The party is crashing at a tavern for the night and a few of the members have already left to their rooms or are currently at the bar getting hammered. 

DM: Kriss, what are you doing?

Cleric (Kriss): Well, I’m going to rejoin the group, sitting a bit away from them and ask the bartender for a pint.

DM: As the bartender starts preparing it, an unknown stranger slides up to the bar and takes the seat beside you.

Rogue (Charlie): Hey there, cutie.

Cleric: Um… *switches to OOC* I check motive

*rolls a 5*

DM: The rogue seems friendly enough.

*some time passes and the two have been talking away*

Rogue: Say… It’s getting late. Why don’t we continue this conversation somewhere… with fewer ears?
