The Hallowed.

a tarot spread for samhain.

1. The Coffin.

This is what needs to be buried. What in my life needs to be left behind?

2. The Grave.

Some things are written in stone and can’t be changed. What in my life do I need to come to terms with? What can’t be changed?

3. The Hallowed.

The veil between those who are living and those who have passed is thinnest tonight. What do the souls of those who have passed need to reveal to me?

WITCHCRAFT 101 : CLEANSING

Hello everyone ! It is been a while since I posted something, so I decided to write an article about cleansing. However, everything I wrote is based by my own believes and my personnal practice : if you disagree with something I say or if you want to add something, feel free to leave a comment with your remarks. I am only starting to consider myself as an advanced witch and I am completely aware that I can do mistakes. My first desire is to learn from my mistakes.

What is cleansing and how it is different from cleaning ?

Cleansing is the act of purifying a space or an object from any negative, bad or unwanted energies that would interfere into your spellwork. This action aims to get rid of any residual energies, repulse unwanted guests such as entities from the other world, spirits, demons (although this won’t be enough alone)… It differs from cleaning.

Why is it important to cleanse ?

It is important as you don’t want any energy/entity/… to interfere during your spell or in your daily life. For example, when moving into a new house or before performing a spell. The reason is the same : to get rid off of any energies that would still be there. For the house, to repulse any energy left by the previous inhabitant of the said house, but also to prepare the space for a warding. When about to perform a spell, to let go of the previous energy I called upon during a spell I did before.

What are the different ways to cleanse ?

Each methods of cleansing has their own advantages but also their inconveniences. Here are some of the ways I learned about :

  • SMOKE OF HERBS AND INCENSE : One of the most well-known way to cleanse a space is to use the smoke from incense or herbs. Light the incense or burn the herbs then guide the smoke in the area.

Pros : It’s a popular practice and easy to do, the possibility to match the incense or herbs to your intents either purify a space or consecrate a space for the spell that will be cast, a good offering for deities and spirits. It also smell very good.

Cos : some herbs like Palo Santo and White Sage endangered other species and ecosystems due to their overuse. Also, there is practices from closed cultures such as smudging that cannot be done by people that do not belong to the culture. I urge you to do researches about cultural appropriation for this reason. If you live with some people that do not like the smell of incense or have medical breathing issues, this won’t be a good idea at all too.

  • CLEANING : Although there is a huge difference between cleansing a space before or after a ritual or a spell and tidying your room, cleaning -when intended to be a form of purification- can do wonders.

Pros : The perfect alternative for closet witches, discreet and not suspicious for non-witches. You can add certain oils in the water you use to mop the floor, grounded coffee to clean leather-made fourniture… You can pretend that you prefer more ecological ways to clean your house !

Cons : You must have some knowledge in the different ways to make your own cleaning products -if you want to make them yourself-, which can sometimes seem complicated depending of the recipe you chose. If you use essential oils, be careful about the one you want to use as some aren’t safe for skin and/or pets.

  • SPRAY : Another affordable way to cleanse a space is to create a water-based solution you will spray around you and the space you want to cleanse.

Pros :Easy to make, smells great too ; you can use essential oils, herbs and crystals that will match your intent.

Cons : Be cautious on the herbs, oils and crystals you use as not all of them are safe to use (selenite dissolves in water and becomes toxic, some herbs are poisonous, certain oils aren’t safe to be used around pets…). Always do some researches before making one !

  • MUSIC AND SOUNDS : Music and sounds are made out of the vibration of frequencies in the air. So, playing certains frequencies in a room you want to cleanse will also work of those energies. You can also use the chimes of a bell, your own voice in order to sing, or an instrument.

Pros : There is a great amount of playlists on Youtube, Spotify and Deezer compilig many songs made out of those perticular frequencies ; it helps also with meditation and… Everyone likes music, right ?

Cons : Not everyone likes music, in fact. And not everyone likes to meditate with sound too. If you live with your family or a roommate, they may not like it. Also, you may be self-conscious about your voice or your skill when playing an instrument which will make you nervous. (It is my case)

  • CRYSTALS : Some crystals are known to attract certains things to the owner of the stone (love and friedship for rose quartz, focus with tiger eyes…), and some others are known to help to purify and protect a space by absorbing energies such as clear quartz or obsidian.

Pros : They are elegantly pretty and various, some are affordable

Cons : Among the fact that some crystals can be pretty expensive or will need a bigger amount of cleansing -because crystals needs to be cleanse more or less often- it also require child labour and poor wages for the minners that collect them. Please, be cautious about that, inform yourself on the business behind and try to purchase from equitable suppliers as much as possible.

If I forgot to add a method or if I did a mistake somewhere, please do not hesitate to leave a comment or to send me a DM. I hope that this will help some of you. May your days be blessed and your lives safe from any harm.

Death Witchcraft in Cemeteries

Blessings this Blue Moon Samhain!🌝

Hello all! My name is Lúthiena, and I am a Death Lunar Spirit Witch. I have been practicing for almost 4 years! I currently have 7 Spirit Companions who consist of Faeries, Demons, Hellhounds, Angels, and a Selkie. I visit two Spirits at my local cemetery often, who have given me permission to use their names. The first is an Irish woman named Eunice. The second is a grandmother named Cynthia. I have spent many days inside cemeteries since I was little, always interested in Death. If you are interested in the Path of Death Witchery, here is a wonderful 101 post, made by my dearest friend!

My post will consist of techniques and methods to working with Spirits of Cemeteries and Death Energy within a Cemetery. These are my personal experiences and are not the only way to working with Death! Please take everything I say with a grain of salt, and question everything! Remember, we discover our paths from experiences. Experience + Knowledge = Wisdom. I hope you all enjoy this, as much as I enjoyed making it!

What is Death to Me?

Death to me is a part of Life. Working with this energy, you must realize that Life is a part intertwined with Death. We cannot experience one without the other. The cycle of Life results in Death. But without Death, Life is not possible. Death is a beginning. Like the tarot card interpretation, Death is a time of rebirth.

How we cannot stop Summer turning into Fall and Fall into Winter, is how we cannot stop Death. But, rebirth is there. Everything turns dark, and pale in Winter, then suddenly Spring arrives and little green sprouts begin popping their faces from the ground.

This is how I view Death. Our bodies may die, but our spirit lives on in those who remember us. Our soul is reincarnated, born again, and we begin a whole new journey of Life, called Afterlife.

Before working with Death Energy, you must establish what Death means to you. Sit down and journal what you believe happens to us when we die, and research different cultures view of the Afterlife. Think about what you would wish to happen with your body when you are gone, and where your soul will go (if you believe in that!). If Death scares you, ask yourself why, and begin to work through your worries.

This is a crucial step to beginning a Death Witch path, because when working with Death Energy you must know what it means to you, as this will establish how you feel this energy. If you are frightened, the energy of death will frighten you more. But, if we go in with understanding, death energy is a magical experience that can extend your magical abilities beyond.

Cemetery Etiquette

Before I begin talking about working in cemeteries, I would like to cover some basics of going to visit.

1) Protection, protection, protection!!! This is your number one priority. If you do not understand why protection is the most important thing for your safety, please do some research on why. Never begin working with Spirits unless you know how to protect yourself and banish if it needs to happen!
Another major thing of protection when working with Death Energy is a knowledge of warding. Wards are essential in protection, and will protect you and those you interact with. Begin researching Wards and Warding, and create them before working with Spirits and Death's energy!

There are many ways you can protect yourself and I will link some posts I have come across on the basics of protection, but please do your own research on all areas of protecting yourselves!🖤

Protection Masterposts:

Correspondences of Protection:

2) When entering, acknowledge the Gatekeeper. They are the ones who watch over the cemetery and make sure things go accordingly. Some do not believe in this, so do not hold my word as truth! Establish if you believe in the Gatekeepers or not, either one is okay! I, before entering, like to say hello and leave an offering for them. (Some offering ideas are listed in #5)

3) Do not step on the graves, headstones, and items left for the Dead. In general, respect everything inside.

4) Before taking anything, ask permission. This includes Graveyard Dirt*, take from the perimeter of the grave, and give thanks. But, do not take any items left on or beside the graves. As these are either gifts from family/friends or offerings. This includes the little stones on top of the headstones! These are offerings, as well.

*Graveyard Dirt is the collecting of dirt in Cemeteries. This dirt has Death Energy embedded in it and can be used as offerings, as an ingredient in spells, rituals, or wards, and can be used for many other things.

5) For what you take, give thanks and leave an offering. Many popular offerings in graveyards include but aren't limited to coins, flowers, poppy seeds, cigarettes, alcohol, apples, and pomegranates.
6) If you happen to have any garbage with you, take it back out with you. Pick up any trash you see, as well! This not only helps our Mother Earth, but earns the respect of the spirits in return.
7) Check local laws for your Cemeteries! Sometimes there are certain things we can/cannot do. Follow the Law and listen to the staff! Please dont get in trouble!

Respect and protection are your main priorities when in a cemetery. Generally, respect everything as you would in a museum or sacred area, and treat it how you would wish to be treated. And protect yourself with as much as you can!

Things to Do In Cemeteries

If you aren't comfortable establishing contact with the Afterlife, here are some things you can do instead!

•Grave Watching: Grave watching is what I call walking around a cemetery and looking at the graves! The rules I listed above still apply, but this is to get yourself familiar with who/what resides in the cemetery.

•Grave Keeping: this is tending to the needs of the cemetery! Like picking up trash, weeding, and tending to graves. But before doing this, check your local laws and check with who owns the cemetery, as sometimes we aren't allowed to tend.

•Taking a Walk: just take a walk!😊

•Having a Picnic

•Make a Map: while you're grave walking, bring a piece of paper and make a map of who is where! If you search online, sometimes there's a map of graves you can print out, too! I like to put this in my B.O.S. to show who I work with and mark where magical spots are!

There are many things you can do inside a cemetery that isn't working with spirits! Just go there and do! Practice safety and respect!! Listen to local laws!! Please!

Working with Human Spirits of Cemeteries

When beginning to work in a cemetery, first you should introduce yourself and let the spirits know what you are there for. For me this looks like; "Hello. I am here to visit with you all. You may call me Lúthiena. Let me know if I can assist you in anyway."

Some Ghosts do not like to be bothered and others dont like to work with practitioners and that is okay! Leave them be.

You will have some who will like to join in conversation.

To do this, you may bring a pendulum, some tarot cards, a scrying mirror, or whatever you like to establish contact! A rule of thumb: do NOT contact a person until AT LEAST a year after their death. Like us, Spirits go through grieving processes and need time to accept their change. Allow them time to do so.

When you've got your tools of communication, walk around and find a grave that "speaks" to you, trust your intuition to lead you the way. Sit in front of the grave and once again, introduce who you are. Next, ask politely if you may have a conversation with this person. If they say no, say thank you and continue on. If yes, this may be the beginning of a beautiful friendship!

When talking, a couple things you should stray away from are questions about their Death and Life. Unless, given permission to do so, as these things can make the spirit uncomfortable.

Once you have finished talking and are ready to leave, ask if you may leave and begin laying out your offerings. Once again ask for permission to return at a later date to talk if you wish to do so. A lot of spirits will say yes as they enjoy having the company! Say goodbye and go about your day!

The Energy of Death

When in the cemetery, take some time to familiarize yourself with the energy. Below I will list an exercise I do in my cemetery! Before doing this exercise, you should have knowledge and experience in grounding and energy work.

For me, this exercise looks like sitting near the graves of my friends, shutting my eyes, and just listening. I place my palms on the ground beneath me and listen.

I listen to the crys of the infants gone too soon, the cries of the soldiers in war, the memories that reside within the spirits. Open yourself up to it, let your mind go blank and absorb all that is near.

For the first time of doing this, I recommend beginning with a time frame, of 5-10 minutes, depending on how much energy work you have done. The energy of Death can be very overwhelming at first, as the Dead wish to speak as they have not spoken in years. Relax and know you can stop at any moment if it is too much! Breathe and listen, relax and let the energy in.

Once you have opened yourself up, imagine what these energies, these beautiful memories, look and feel like. Feel the energy flowing through your palms from the ground. Relax and breathe, know you are safe, and begin to form this energy into a ball in your hands.

Once you are ready to let go of the energy, take the ball formed and push it back into the ground. Lower your hands back into the grass and ground yourself. Begin coming back into consciousness and become aware of your surroundings.

Continue to do this until you are able to acknowledge the energy just by walking through the gateway. You will get there, but it takes time and practice. I believe in you!

Spirits of Cemeteries

In a cemetery you can find a wide variety of spirits, not only human spirits. This list will include spirits I have interacted with in my cemetery, which may not include every entity you come across in yours.

•Banshee: a type of faerie, Banshee's are known as the Omens of Death in Irish Mythology, as their wailing when heard is said to be a warning of a family members death

•Hellhound: Hellhounds are Dog-Like Creatures from the Demon realms, but do not like to be compared to dogs. Hellhounds are often watchful protectors and often times help souls cross over to the otherworld

•Heaven Hound: Alike their Hell counterparts, Heaven Hounds are similar in appearance to Hellhounds, but reside in a different realm

•Darker Aligned Faeries: the Faeries of the Fall and Winter Courts along with the Unseelie Courts, who know more than anyone the importance of Death in Life

•Angels: gorgeous winged entities of Life and Death, they watch over us and guide us through Life, as well as in Death

Communicating and working with these spirits is the same as working with ghosts of humans. But, instead of saying "My name is ...." when introducing yourself, replace it with "You may call me..." With some of these entities, names hold power over another. But, if you do what I have said above, it's a way of going around having power over your name!

Conclusion

The path of a Death Witch is a very hard path, and I highly recommend doing your research before beginning anything. Begin with protection and energy work, and work your way up to Spirit Work.

Cemeteries are the home of the Dead and to respect them, you must learn and understand and this will gain their respect too. Following laws and procedures will also aid in your experiences with ghosts. Knowledge and experience with energy work assists you in Death Witchcraft as well. Research, research, research!! Once you have finished your research and have begun visiting and acknowledging Deaths energy in your local cemetery, you are ready to communicate with Spirits! Good luck!🖤

Please feel free to send any asks with questions you all may have! Thank you for your time! I hope the construction of the post isn't too horrifying as I had to do it all on mobile! Many blessings and love upon you all🌻✨🌙

Light It Up

A tarot spread for the Beltane season

  1. Fuel: What do I need to consume?
  2. Oxygen: What will give me energy to pursue my goals during this season?
  3. Heat: What will ignite my growth?

This is an original spread I created. Did you like it? Please give it a try and mention me to let me know how it went for you.

Avatar

for me, Beltane falls on this saturday. (the equivalent of Samhain for you northern hemisphere witches)

I had grandoise plans to properly celebrate my first sabbat, but alas, I have 17 more days of uni this year, and 6 assignments left.  I wont lie and say I dont have time, there are moments here and there that I could be getting things ready for Beltane for, but I will admit I’m all out of spare energy.

So, all going well I should be able to dedicate some time on Beltane to celebrating the day, even in a very low key way.

What I hope to do for beltane:

  1. - get up early
  2. - care for my plants
  3. - give thanks for the new life that comes with this time of year
  4. - leave an offering (unsure whom for yet, but I’m thinking just a very general offering)
  5. - Do a tarot spread
  6. -light a lavender incense
  7. -burn a green or purple candle

THE NEWBIE WITCH - WHAT OTHERS OFTEN DON’T TELL YOU ABOUT BEGINNING THE PRACTICE

You will find lots of articles on tumblr for newbie witches but I realized when I started practicing that a lot of things were missing and I was kind of ashamed to ask because I felt stupid.

This post is for people who have just started practicing or are planning to. If you have already been into witchcraft for years this could be a little reminder for you.

  • You don’t need to be wiccan. You don’t need deities in your craft. When I started I was a little puzzled: everyone was talking about prayers, faith and other religious things essential in the craft. It seemed everyone was wiccan! Or Pagan. But they were talking about things I didn’t believe in. They were questioning my religious beliefs and my will to practice witchcraft. Then I found out about the existence of secular witches i.e. witches who do not include religion in their craft. Religion is not essential in witchcraft. You can use your own power, you can ask mother earth to land you some. It’s perfectly fine.
  • Get info BEFORE you seriously practice. This is a point lots of people skip and underrate. When I discovered magic was real I was enthusiastic. I wanted to start as soon as possible and I was upset my exams didn’t allow me to. Now I’m glad I waited. While I was studying for my exams I read various articles, I followed witchy blogs on tumblr (windvexer and witchtips are great blogs for beginners. Look for their masterposts!) and I collected enough info to start practicing one month later but understanding what I was doing. I’m not saying you should wait months to start but just be sure to be aware of the basis and the possible dangers.
  • Trust your guts! There are witches who will tell you super rare and expensive items are required in your craft. They will often tell you to use things you can’t have. I’m not saying they’re wrong, they are probably suggesting what it’s right in their practice. But they are sometimes not newbiesfriendly blogs. My suggestions is: do what it feels right for you. (But if you want to use herbs and eat them do some serious research first!!!) For example, if someone tells you you should use rose quartz for tranquillity but you don’t have it/don’t want to use crystals in your craft/you don’t associate tranquility with quartz, etc. don’t do it. Use a substitute! Plus, don’t underestimate the power of visualization. It takes practice, I know, but if you can’t have an item, just imagine you have it! And remember: magic doesn’t come from candles, crystals or whatever. It is within you. They just enhance it but they’re not essential.
  • Magic is real but do not confuse it with real life. Before you get pissed and think what I said it’s crap let me explain it. Magic is part of your life and your life is real, duh, but do not get overwhelmed by magic. In few words: don’t forget living. Don’t think every single thing that happens in your life is magical! If you see a bunny in a pet shop it probably isn’t a sign meant to you. It’s just a bunny. There are indeed signs hidden in your normal life but don’t think that everything is.
  • Magic just gives a little push. You can’t perform magic with a purpose and without acting in the real world in order to make it happen. You can’t create a sigil to have new friends if you have 0 social interactions. Don’t ask for the impossible: a spell won’t allow you to meet Obama, I’m sorry, unless you live in the White House.
  • Don’t be afraid to live magic and muggle lives at the same time. I swear the first time I performed magic and I created a shield I felt bad going to the bathroom. It seems dumb, I know, but beginning the practice can be scary the first time. Don’t be ashamed of what’s natural and don’t be scared to use subtle magic when in company. Magic is part of you!
  • You don’t need labels. I repeat: YOU DON’T NEED LABELS! When I started practicing I felt the need to say out loud what my interests were. The truth? I couldn’t say it yet. Everything fascinated me so I just told people I was eclectic. But I actually am not. Don’t feel in a rush when you get into the magical realm. Just do what you like and you will later understand what you prefer.
  • It is okay if you’re not into everything magical! You will see lots of witches who use herbs in their practice. Others use crystals. And every spell you find online requires either herbs or crystals. You will spontaneously think they are essential for every witch but they are actually not. Don’t feel ashamed. Say it out loud: “I don’t like herbs!/I don’t like crystals!/I don’t like sigils!”. You can only love tarots and you can still be a witch. You can dislike jars and you will still be a witch.
  • It is okay if you don’t want to be called “witch”. I understand that this word is often used to describe someone nasty, ugly or unpleasant. Or you could just simply not like the word for your own personal reasons. You can use other terms, more specific about your craft: diviner, spirit worker, fortune teller, etc. Or if you just want a synonym of the word witch: magic practitioner, sorcerer, wizard. There are many others. Find the word you feel comfortable with.
  • Males can be witches as well. Witch is not just a word for women. If you’re male and you want to practice magic and be called a witch, go for it!
  • You don’t need to be in a coven. If you don’t want to be part of a group you can learn on your own. And that’s fine.
  • Be careful of the words you use. You’re new in the craft and you start using words like gipsy, spirit guides, strega, etc. Be very mindful of the words you choose! They can be disrespectful, cultural appropriation or misuse of terms about a closed practice. Do your own research and remember to be always respectful. If you misuse a word and people let you know it’s wrong apologize, be polite and change your attitude. It’s easy. For more info I’d suggest to look here [cultural appropriation 1 2; gipsy as a slur wordwitch culture; stregheria 1 2 3; - I will add more links in the future about this topic]
  • Don’t let others define what’s right and what’s wrong. Some people say cursing is bad, blood magic is for evil witches, satanism is bad, etc. There is no “white magic” or “black magic”. Magic is neutral and it depends on you. You can curse and be the nicest person in the world. If you’re afraid of the three fold law I’d suggest to read this post and don’t let others influence you. It’s your choice. Not theirs.
  • Everyone can be a witch. When you discover magic is real and it’s not just in books you ask yourself “Can I be a witch?”. You may think you need someone in your family to “pass you the magical genes” or something like that. But what most of witches believe is that magic lies within each one of us. You can be more naturally talented but if you are not don’t be afraid. Speaking of books, remember that Hermione was born in a muggle family yet she was the greatest! If you don’t have natural talents you can still be a witch. Work hard and you will see great results!
  • Gender, sexual orientation, age, race, culture do not prevent you from being a witch. You can be transgender, asexual, African American, Chinese or whatever. You can still be a witch.

Did I forget something? Let me know in comments or reblogs and I will add it in the list!

Neveira

adding on to a brilliant list! you can be a witch and create effective magic without tools and expensive objects. with practice, magic can be produced through pure energy and intent alone! don’t feel like you have to go broke trying to afford herbs, crystals, candles, or decks. those objects are simply channels for your energy to flow through. they can help your magic, but they are not a necessity!

a long time ago i learned that a big part of your life needs to be undocumented and just simply enjoyed in the present. you don’t need to post a picture of the book your reading for it to be good. you don’t need to have a pic of you posing before the sea as proof that u had a good trip. there’s a very fine line between manufacturing moments for future nostalgia and honoring happy experiences by commemorating them into art. and it’s all about intention: do i want to take a picture because it would look good on ig or do i want to take a picture because i do not want to forget how insanely happy i am right now? or, preferably, do i even need to take a picture at all?

Any specific tips for beginners/ baby witches?

Ask yourself why you want to be a witch.

First and foremost, that is what you have to do.

Is it only because of the aesthetics? Go be a Harry Potter fan instead.

Is it only because you like Greek mythology? Just watch Clash of the Titans on Netflix.

Is it only because you want to try tarot for fun? Fine. You do not have to be a witch for that.

Witchcraft is not a passing trend like avocado toast, TikTok or smokey eye makeup.

It is a sacred way of life.

Countless of its practitioners were killed simply for existing. Countless others had to hide their beliefs just to keep on breathing.

You do not get to turn our ancient faith into a hashtag on Instagram, while being ignorant of how real it is for so many of us.

But if you truly feel the craft calling out to you… if you really sense the supernatural emerging from inside you… if you sincerely wish to honor the witches who came before you… then welcome.  We would be glad to have you.

Get your hands on these books. They are introductions to tarot, mythology and spellcasting.

For something even more basic, grab these. One is a handbook on divination, and the other is an elementary-level magic introduction.

You do not have to buy your own copies. Find them online or borrow them from a library. You do not have to read them cover to cover either. Browse the pages until you are ready to dive in further.

Absolute beginners, with no elders to guide them, are better off learning the basics from such sources. Because compared to most internet writers, published authors tend to be less biased. You are then assured of a factual overview of what the craft is all about.

Then find out who your true deity is. Start learning about entities. And try out as many spells and methods of divination as you wish.

Lastly, remember… If deep inside, you are not ready for the grueling task of studying magic, your journey is bound to be disappointing, even tragic. So make sure your heart is truly open. Only then will you be one of the chosen.

How do you fall back in love with life?

  1. clean your room.  clean space, uncluttered space, space that doesn’t have miasma clinging to it can work wonders.  clean the dishes.  sweep.  take out the trash.  peel the clothes off the floor and wash them, and then actually fold/hang them.  take a long shower.  scrub behind your knees.  brush your teeth.  (this can be utterly exhausting, but try to get it done in a day, if you can.  the end result is worth it.)
  2. pull out your notebook.  it doesn’t need to be a new notebook, but preferably one that you don’t usually write in, or that you haven’t touched in a while.  fuck moleskins.  the yellow legal pad will work fine.  sit in your room, or in the park, or in the library, and write a list.  count clouds.  describe all the colors that you see, and note patterns that arise.  sketch the cracks in the walls.  note the shape light makes when it enters a space.  talk about what the air tastes like, smells like.  what sounds are there?  even the white nose, break that down: air planes, fans, cicadas, anything.  remind yourself that you are sitting in the middle of a space brimming with detail.  remind yourself that you are not in nothingness and emptiness.  your world is fathomless.  it has potential.
  3. drink cold water and try to eat something that isn’t processed.  it does not need to be fancy.  buy yourself an apple with the change between your couch cushions.  eat it outside.  if you’re someone who walks, walk somewhere afterwards, just to stretch your legs.  take your fucking meds.  remember that its a good thing that you are inside your body.  your body is a fantastic and endlessly intricate machine, and even though society has smacked a bunch of poisonous ideas on it, that doesn’t change its inherent worth and splendor.  take care of it.
  4. read a novel.  underline your favorite lines, and write phrases that twist your heart inside your chest on the back of your hand with an ink pen.  read a novel like it’s poetry.  read poetry, something decadent but unpretentious.  watch a movie you haven’t seen before.  if there are free art galleries near you, walk through one.  take your time.  let yourself bask.  if there are patterns in what makes your soul ache, write those patterns down – marbles arches or soot crumbling bricks or dandelions or descriptions of dresses or whatever it is, write them down.
  5. your chosen family is important.  remember, they picked you as much as you picked them.  the love has no obligation.  it is given freely and it is given from a place of compassion.  you are not a burden.  if you need to breathe, take a minute by yourself and just exist, but remember to go back to your people.  when they need you, listen and be gracious.  always be gracious.  the universe sometimes remembers things like that.
  6. listen to new music.  link jump on youtube or related artist jump on spotify or ask the chap beside you in the cafe what their favorite band is, and listen to that.  listen to something that you don’t usually listen to.  we tend to tie up a lot of memory with music.  we are falling in love again.  the soundtrack needs to be specific to that.
  7. allow yourself to indulge in romantics.  press flowers in old books.  play movies with subtitles and mouth the words.  dance in your room.  wear something that makes you feel good, even if you wouldn’t wear it in public.  write your chosen family letters, even if you hand deliver them.  write poetry, even awful poetry.  revel in its awfulness.  eat dark chocolate and when your chosen family want to go out, try to go out with them sometimes, even if its just to the market.

Spell Loopholes

Wording a spell correctly is extremely important! We’ve all heard the stories of someone who cast a spell and technically had it come true, but in a way that wasn’t what they actually wanted at all! Here’s a list of common “loopholes” spells will take to get the job done, and how to make sure you get what you want!

🕯Taking its time- “I want money,” you tell the Universe, hoping to get some help with rent. Well, rent comes and there’s no extra cash in sight! Then, two weeks later, a surprise wad of cash all but lands in your lap. The spell came true, but not in time for when it mattered. This is easily fixed by adding “…by the end of the month,” or specifying what the money is for, which in this case was this month’s rent.

🕯No help needed- “I want money,” you say again. Magic will often take the path of least resistance, so if you’ve already got a paycheck on the way, the spell might not do much besides make sure it doesn’t get lost. There. Money. It can be good to specify that you want your spell to work in addition to everything you’re already doing!

🕯 Bare minimum- This time from your money spell, it arrives on time from an unexpected source! But it’s a quarter you found on the ground. Maybe three quarters. Not much help! If your intent would require the money to be close to a certain amount or any other specific like that, let it be known! The universe isn’t there to make assumptions.

🕯 For the worst- Let’s say you have two friends that have been flirting, so you cast a nice little spell to let any mutual interest between them blossom into a relationship and save them some trouble. It happens, but it turns out they do NOT work well with each other. They are interested in each other, but argue constantly and bring out the worst in each other. The relationship is hurting them both. You had the absolute best of intentions, but there was no way of knowing that would happen! This is why a lot of witches include the phrase, “for the highest good” in their spells, as a failsafe for any unexpected pitfalls like this that may be lurking. The universe will see them but doesn’t know to care unless you specify.

🕯Another layer- Once I made a dream bear to bring me more dreams. Well, I had lots more dreams, but couldn’t remember any of them! I didn’t think that was something I needed to specify. Make sure you hit every point you need to be satisfied with a result.

As a general rule, if my spell includes a prayer or petition of any sort, I take a few minutes and comb through it for stuff like this beforehand. What am I specifying? What am I leaving up to interpretation? Could any of that manifest in a way I would be unhappy with? Take a little time before you start casting to smooth out all those wrinkles! Best of wishes!
