Shade sat alone in her modest room, the soft glow of a small lamp casting long shadows across her desk. The night had fully enveloped Spagonia, wrapping the city in a peaceful silence that was only broken by the occasional rustle of leaves outside her window. Her life had been a series of unexpected turns, from her days as the Procurator of the Nocturnus Clan to her current role as a diligent student. It was a journey marked by intrigue and transformation.

She placed her pen down with a gentle sigh, the sound barely audible in the stillness. A single dreadlock fell across her face, and she brushed it aside with a weary hand. "Finished."

Rising slowly from her chair, Shade moved with deliberate grace towards the fridge. She opened the fridge door, the cool air brushing against her face as she reached for a drink. The simple act was a moment of respite, a pause in the midst of her relentless pursuit of knowledge.

Shade surveyed her cozy apartment. The room was a harmonious blend of practicality and comfort, with walls adorned in warm, muted tones and shelves lined with books and artifacts from her past adventures.

The home was a gift from Professor Pickle, a gesture of gratitude and belief in her potential. He had seen in Shade a spark of curiosity and intellect, qualities he cherished and sought to nurture. Understanding her need for a stable environment conducive to study and reflection, he had arranged for this space, ensuring it was both functional and inviting.

The professor had chosen this particular location for its solitude, away from the city's hustle, yet close enough to the university. It was a place where Shade could immerse herself in her studies, a reflection to Pickle's foresight and kindness. The home stood as a symbol of her new beginning, a chapter in her life where learning and self-discovery took center stage.

Shade was almost ready for bed, the weight of the day's studies settling comfortably on her shoulders. Tomorrow promised a new day, a routine that had become a welcome part of her life. It had been some time since she joined, but she felt no regrets; this path had brought her a sense of peace she had long sought.

As she prepared for sleep, she reflected on the life she had left behind. The thrill of battle and the weight of responsibility as a warrior had faded, replaced by the joy of learning and the pursuit of knowledge. Shade reveled in the opportunity to explore subjects that ignited her curiosity, from history to the intricacies of the world around her.

This new life was not merely a change; it was a rebirth. She cherished the quiet moments spent with books, the thrill of discovery, and the friendships she had formed. Shade had come to love this scholarly existence, finding solace in the pages of her studies and the promise of tomorrow's lessons.

After The Storm - Chapter 2: Shadow

Shadow the Hedgehog stood amidst the serene expanse of snow in Holoska, his silhouette cutting a stark figure against the icy landscape. Despite his formidable physical endurance as the Ultimate Life Form, fatigue weighed heavily upon him—not in the physical sense, but rather a weariness of the mind. The recent battle against the Nocturnus Clan had been a grueling ordeal, a worldwide conflict that had spanned continents and tested the mettle of all involved. Now, with the dust settled and the threat of the clan vanquished, there remained the formidable task of securing the remnants of their technology scattered across the snowy terrain.

Snowflakes danced around Shadow, their delicate forms creating a serene backdrop to the scene unfolding before him. With arms crossed and his stoic expression firmly in place, he watched as his GUN Agents diligently went about the task of collecting the scattered remnants of the Nocturnus Clan's technology. In the distance, he could see the towering form of Omega as he meticulously collected the remains of the Nocturnus Clan's Gizoids. Though Shadow possessed the physical prowess to aid in the effort, he knew all too well that his talents lay more in the realm of destruction than in meticulous collection.

"I was wondering where you were hiding."

His reverie was interrupted by the familiar sound of Rouge's voice, a melodious blend of seduction and playfulness that never failed to draw his attention. Turning to face her, Shadow found the bat approaching with a grace that belied the chaos they had just endured. Despite the gravity of their recent battle, Rouge seemed almost buoyant, her spirits lifted by the thrill of the fight. She still had on her brown fur trench coat, adding a touch of elegance to her demeanor amidst the snow.

"Well, that was one way to spice up the day. Pretty fun, huh?" Rouge quipped, a mischievous glint in her eye.

Shadow arched an eyebrow at her remark, a wry amusement flickering in his crimson eyes. "Fun's not the word I'd use," he retorted, his voice tinged with a hint of dry sarcasm.

The Aftermath Is Now Live!

A few more hours of restful sleep embraced Tails, and as the first rays of sunlight filtered through the window, coaxing him back to consciousness, he stretched with a languid yawn. Eager to greet the new day, he swung his legs out of bed and slipped into his trusty sneakers.

As he stood, the dawn of a fresh morning prompting a sense of renewal, Tails whispered to himself, a quiet affirmation echoing in the stillness of his room.

"It's a new day, Miles... A new day."

With determination lacing each step, Tails made his way downstairs, the sunlight painting golden hues across the familiar surfaces of his home. The open bedroom door beckoned, and he instinctively moved toward it, the anticipation of the day's possibilities invigorating him.

However, a sudden surge of panic seized him as he found the room empty. A fleeting fear gripped his heart, threatening to unfurl into a full-blown panic attack.

"Cosmo?"

Just as the tendrils of anxiety tightened their grip, a flash of vibrant green caught the periphery of his vision. Against the backdrop of the surrounding nature, Cosmo stood in the garden, tending to the flourishing plants. A sigh of relief escaped Tails, the tension in his shoulders dissipating as he observed her engrossed in her gentle task.

With a small smile playing on his lips, Tails descended the remaining stairs, the promise of the new day underscored by the presence of his newfound companion. The garden, a haven of serenity, seemed to echo the sentiment that life, despite its occasional tumult, could still blossom into moments of quiet beauty.

Intrigued, Tails quietly opened the backdoor and approached the garden with a measured step, mindful not to disrupt the tranquil scene. A gentle clearing of his throat preceded his greeting.

"Good morning, Cosmo."

Cosmo, engrossed in the delicate task of tending to a flower, turned towards Tails with a warm smile. "Good morning, Tails," she replied, her voice a soothing melody that seemed to harmonize with the rustle of leaves in the morning breeze.

Tails tilted his head in genuine curiosity. "What are you up to?"

Cosmo's attention returned to the flower in her hands, her fingers moving with a grace that spoke of an intimate connection with the natural world. "Your garden is truly lovely," she began, her words carrying a gentle sincerity. "Back on my home planet, flowers hold a special significance. They're not just beautiful; they represent the life force that connects us all. Each bloom tells a story, and when we tend to them, it's like nurturing the bonds that tie us together."

Her explanation unfolded like petals unfurling in the morning light, and Tails found himself drawn into the ethereal narrative of Cosmo's connection to the floral tapestry. It was a glimpse into a world beyond his own, where the language of flowers conveyed sentiments and stories that transcended mere aesthetics. The quiet beauty of the garden took on new meaning as Cosmo wove her tale, and in that shared moment, the morning seemed to carry the weight of a profound understanding between two souls bound by an unexpected friendship.

Tails' smile lingered, a reflection of genuine warmth as he absorbed Cosmo's explanation. The juxtaposition of her gentle nature with the harrowing experiences inflicted by the Nocturnus Clan stirred a profound empathy within him. It was a stark reminder that even the most resilient spirits could be tested by the cruelties of the universe.

Kneeling beside her, Tails observed the delicate bloom with newfound appreciation. His gloved hand hovered near the same flower, the contrast between the organic fragility of nature and the mechanical precision of his inventions striking a poignant chord.

"I don't get a lot of time to do gardening," Tails admitted, a touch of self-reflection in his tone. "I tried to make some devices to make sure the garden was taken care of. But," he paused, scratching his head with a boyish grin, "I don't know, I guess something about a garden requires a gentle touch."

Cosmo's gaze softened, understanding the sentiment behind his words. "On my home, my mother taught us that flowers bloom and thrive when nurtured with care and respect. It is our duty to tend to the garden of our world so that every flower can reach its fullest potential."

A subtle undercurrent of melancholy lingered in Cosmo's voice, a wistful longing for the home and family she had left behind. The weight of her unspoken sorrow tugged at Tails' heart, a shared pain that underscored the gravity of her displacement.

Every day, the reality of their predicament gnawed at Tails—the uncertainty of Green Gate's fate, the potential destruction wrought by the Nocturnus Clan. Yet, he quelled the insidious "what ifs" that threatened to overwhelm him. Instead, his focus remained steadfast on the responsibility at hand—providing solace and comfort to Cosmo in her newfound home.

Standing up, Tails extended a hand toward her with a genuine offer, a bridge from the contemplative moment to the tangible world of shared experiences. "Ready for some breakfast?"

Cosmo's smile, though hesitant, blossomed at the prospect. However, she hesitated, acutely aware of the soil staining her hands. "Oh, I don't wanna get your gloves dirty."

Tails chuckled, a lightness in his demeanor that sought to dispel any concerns. "That's okay, I got about fifty pairs."

Cosmo's uncertainty melted away, replaced by a gentle acceptance. Her unadorned hand, distinct from Tails' gloved one, met his in a tender union of fingers. As Tails helped her to her feet, the brief connection spoke volumes—a silent promise to navigate the challenges ahead together, hand in hand, forging a path through the uncertainties of the present toward a future yet to unfold.

The Art of Dance Is Now Live!

The royal castle never ceased to amaze Silver every time he visited. The castle seemed as if it were sculpted by the very hands of gods, its towering spires and grand turrets looming like ancient sentinels guarding secrets untold. It was a place where dreams and reality danced together.

But this visit was different. As Silver sat in Blaze's royal bedroom, his fingers tracing the intricate patterns of the silken tapestries adorning the walls, he realized he had come at an interesting time

"So, what's the Celestial Yuletide?" Silver asked, his golden eyes locked on Blaze's every move.

Blaze stopped pacing with her back to Silver. She took a deep breath, steeling her nerves. "It's a yearly celebration held in the castle in celebration of Christmas," she explained. "People from all over the world gather to celebrate peace and cooperation."

Silver's head tilted, his eyes reflecting genuine curiosity. He had always been somewhat of a fish out of water in the Sol Dimension, where Blaze reigned as the princess and guardian of the realm. "So, it's a party?" he asked, his voice carrying a hint of innocent intrigue.

From her vantage point, Blaze couldn't help but roll her eyes, a subtle smile playing at the corner of her lips. It was one of the endearing qualities of Silver that she cherished – his unwavering innocence. It was one of the reasons she enjoyed his company so much.

Blaze turned to face Silver, a faint sigh escaping her lips. "In a manner of speaking, yes."

Silver tilted his head once more, his quizzical expression revealing his lack of familiarity with the Sol Dimension's traditions. "Parties are supposed to be fun, right?" He recalled the chaos of Sonic's birthday during the Time Eater incident, wondering if this celebration would be similarly eventful. "So, what's the problem?"

Blaze gracefully settled into a nearby chair, her regal demeanor contrasting with the playful innocence of Silver. "Silver, when I attend these celebrations, there are always the occasional suitors who seek to catch my attention," she explained with a hint of weariness in her voice. "It's a rather trying experience, having to navigate their advances and manage their expectations."

Silver's eyes widened in understanding. He might not have been well-versed in the ways of royal gatherings, but the concept of unwanted attention was something he could grasp. As he considered Blaze's predicament, he couldn't help but feel a surge of protectiveness toward his best friend.

Silver's face took on an adorable twist as he furrowed his brow, deep in thought. His large, expressive eyes blinked slowly as he pondered, and his lips formed a subtle pout. His quills, normally neatly arranged, seemed to ruffle and quiver with each passing idea that flickered through his mind. He looked like an overgrown child trying to solve a puzzle.

In his mind, Silver ran through all the scenarios where he could be of assistance to Blaze. She was undoubtedly a formidable guardian of the Sol Dimension, capable of wielding flames and handily dispatching any threat. The castle itself was fortified with scores of loyal royal guards, making physical protection redundant.

Then, like a bolt of lightning, an idea struck him. Silver leaped to his feet, and his boots produced a soft, almost playful sound against the floor. "I've got an idea!"

Blaze's ears and tail twitched with momentary surprise at Silver's sudden enthusiasm. She raised an eyebrow, curiosity piqued. Arms crossed, she watched as Silver's golden eyes gleamed with determination.

"Idea?" she inquired, her voice tinged with curiosity.

Silver nodded vigorously, his quills bouncing with his excitement. "Why don't I come with you? You know, like a companion!" His suggestion hung in the air, and he awaited Blaze's response with a hopeful smile, fully aware that he couldn't offer physical protection but eager to provide moral support and be there for his dear friend in her time of need.

Whispers In The Storm Is Now Live!

Shadow the Hedgehog trudged forward through the unforgiving tempest, his quills drenched by the ceaseless downpour. Each step felt like a struggle against invisible chains, as if gravity itself had grown teeth to sink into his every movement. He couldn't help but question how he had stumbled into this maelstrom of chaos and challenge.

The rain poured down in torrents, shrouding the world in a curtain of liquid obscurity. It fell with such intensity that even the Ultimate Life Form had to abandon his signature speed, reduced to a mere mortal battling against the elements. The droplets, heavy as anvils, hammered relentlessly upon his ebony physique.

With every step, Shadow's muscles strained against the weight of the deluge. His jaw clenched, the force of his will etching lines of determination upon his face. His crimson eyes pierced through the veil of water, fixated on an unseen horizon that promised respite from the storm's watery wrath.

The world around him blurred into an impressionistic swirl, shapes and shadows dancing in a liquid ballet. The air, thick with moisture, clung to his fur like the desperate hands of phantoms, impeding his progress with a chilling persistence. It was as if the heavens themselves conspired to drown his spirit.

As he contemplated his options, his gaze drifted to the right. Amidst the chaotic downpour, a familiar sight emerged from the gloom—a quaint cottage nestled amidst the verdant embrace of the Floral Forest Village. It was Amy's home, an unexpected sanctuary in the tempest's relentless grasp.

His expression remained stoic, an enigmatic mask concealing the thoughts that churned within his mind. The decision weighed heavily upon him, as his innate desire for self-preservation warred with the instinct to seek refuge in the haven that stood before him. A silent grunt escaped his lips, revealing a fraction of his internal struggle. Yet, in the end, the hedgehog chose not to risk his life further and resolved to knock upon Amy's door, his salvation within reach.

Shadow closed the distance between himself and the cottage, each step measured and deliberate. The downpour persisted, its relentless assault a symphony of nature's fury.

Raising a gloved hand, he firmly rapped his knuckles against the door, a sound muffled by the drumming of raindrops upon the cottage's roof.

The door creaked open, revealing a small crack of warm light that spilled out into the stormy night. Amy's figure emerged from the brightness within the cottage. Her eyes widened in surprise and concern as she recognized the drenched and weary figure before her.

"Shadow?"

Return of the Dark Brotherhood Chapter 32 Is Now Live!

As Shade stood before the grand Spagonia University, she felt a mixture of excitement and nervousness swirling within her. This was a defining moment, the turning point in her life where she would step away from the battlefield and embrace a new path.

Beside her stood Knuckles and Sonic, their presence akin to pillars of support, unwavering and steadfast. Knuckles, with his protective nature, guarded her from any doubts or fears. Sonic, ever the adventurer, brought a sense of excitement to the moment, reminding her that new horizons awaited her. He couldn't help but recall the events of the Dark Gaia incident that had brought him to Spagonia before.

As Shade fidgeted with her gloves, her heart felt both heavy and hopeful, like a pendulum swinging between two emotions. She adjusted her puffer vest, trying to ease the slight nervousness that fluttered within her chest.

Her eyes turned to Knuckles, the stalwart guardian with whom she had shared many battles and memories. For months, they stood side by side as co-guardians of Angel Island, but deep down, Shade knew that her path lay elsewhere. She needed to forge her own destiny.

Their injuries now healed, they stood there as two warriors, both strong and resilient, like twin pillars of strength. Shade took a deep breath, her voice steady but tinged with emotion.

"I guess this is it," she said, her words hanging in the air.

Knuckles crossed his arms, a mix of pride and bittersweet acceptance in his expression. "Guess so."

Return of the Dark Brotherhood Chapter 31 Is Now Live!

Knuckles blinked in disbelief as he slowly opened his eyes, his vision met with a sight that filled him with both relief and confusion. Hovering above him was Tails, his twin appendages rotating with a familiar whirring sound. Gripping tightly onto Knuckles' unharmed arm, Tails had become an unexpected lifeline, his descent. It was a realization that left Knuckles questioning the mysteries of fate and circumstance.

A weak grin tugged at Knuckles' weary face, his voice barely above a whisper. "Tails..."

Tails, though visibly strained by the weight he bore, radiated a genuine happiness at the sight of his friend's survival. "Knuckles... You're... Really heavy," he managed to quip between labored breaths, a touch of lightheartedness in his words despite the challenging situation.

Gratitude welled up within Knuckles, his heart overflowing with appreciation for Tails' timely intervention. Slowly, the duo descended towards the familiar terrain of Mystic Ruins. With a gentle descent, Tails gracefully touched down in front of his workshop, the air still buzzing with the remnants of the battle. As they returned to solid ground, a wave of concern washed over them in the form of Sonic, Cosmo, and Big, who rushed over to greet them.

Knuckles' eyes scanned the scene before him, taking in the wreckage of defeated Gizoids strewn across the floor, and the subdued figures of defeated clan members, their once-mighty presence reduced to mere remnants of a fading threat.

Cosmo wasted no time in rushing towards Tails. Her slender arms enveloped him in a tight embrace, her warmth a balm against the lingering tension. Tails reciprocated the gesture, their connection radiating with a mixture of love and shared victory.

As their embrace gradually loosened, Sonic approached the trio with an air of genuine pride. His electric emerald eyes sparkled with admiration, mirroring the triumphant smile that played across his lips. In a seamless display of camaraderie, his hand met with Tails' in a resounding high five, a physical manifestation of their unbreakable bond forged through countless battles and shared victories.

Sonic's keen eyes swiftly caught the flicker of absolute pain etched across Knuckles' face, a grim realization dawning upon him. Concern and curiosity intertwined in his voice as he posed the question that weighed heavily on his mind. "Knux, what happened?"

Introducing Merikh: The Secondary Antagonist Of Sonic Chronicles: Return Of The Dark Brotherhood

Merikh is a large echidna who has taken Shade's place as Procurator. His strength and brutality are like no other, his determination to succeed fuelling his desire for victory. He has led countless battles, mostly on his own as no one, not even whole armies, can match his strength. Here is the part where he makes his first appearance in the story.

As the battle raged on on, Knuckles moved with a fluid grace, striking down one clan member after another with powerful punches and swift kicks. He's confident, assured in his fighting skills and ability to take on any challenger. But then, out of nowhere, Merikh appears, his roar filling the air as he launches a haymaker at Knuckles with explosive force.

Knuckles threw up his arm in a desperate attempt to cushion the blow, but the impact still made him stagger backwards, his head ringing. As he tries to regain his balance, he quickly jabbed at Merikh with his other hand, but the huge warrior caught his fist in mid-air and moved in for a crushing low blow to Knuckles' stomach.

Knuckles fell to the ground with a painful gasp, his eyes squeezed shut as the strike leaves its impact. He knows he's in trouble now as Merikh moves his hand forward to grab him, but Knuckles refused to give up that easily. With a fierce determination, he quickly got back up and landed two quick jabs into Merikh's stomach, making the large warrior lean forward and leaving him vulnerable.

Seizing the opportunity, Knuckles jumped up and landed an uppercut on Merikh's chin with all the strength he can muster. The punch landed with a resounding thud, briefly making Merikh's head jolt backwards. But just as quickly, he recovers, his concealed eyes blazing with fury as he retaliated with another haymaker that brought Knuckles down to his knees once more.

Despite the searing pain in his jaw and the ringing in his ears, Knuckles refused to stay down. He forced himself to his feet once more, determined to give as good as he gets. Right before he can make another move, Merikh swooped his arm forward and wrapped his armoured fingers around Knuckles' neck.

Merikh held a tight grip on Knuckles' throat, holding him up with one hand effortlessly while Knuckles frantically punched at his arm in a desperate attempt to break free. But Merikh only tightened his grip, cutting off Knuckles' air supply as he sneered down at him.

Merikh leered forward as taunt, his other hand clenching into a fist. "I expected more from the guardian of the Master Emerald."

Knuckles wheezed and gasped for air, struggling against Merikh's iron grip but unable to break free. His vision started to blur and darken at the edges, his strength draining with every passing moment.

As Knuckles is held up by Merikh, his mind races with disbelief. He can't believe the sheer strength of this unknown opponent. Despite his best efforts, Knuckles' punches are having little to no effect against Merikh's vice-like grip. In his head, Knuckles is analyzing the situation, trying to figure out a way to turn the tables on this formidable foe. But in this moment, all he can do is try to endure and hope for an opportunity to strike back.

The fear that grips Knuckles is a new sensation. He has always been confident in his strength, but now he feels powerless against this adversary. A sense of desperation begins to set in as he realises that this may be the toughest fight he has ever faced. As Merikh continued to hold him up, Knuckles inhaled a deep breath and tried to gather his remaining strength for another attack, all the while hoping that his opponent won't break him before he can even attempt to strike back.

Sonic Chronicles: Return Of The Dark Brotherhood: Preview

Knuckles and Shade sat on a precipice overlooking the lush, verdant landscape of Angel Island. The setting sun cast a warm, golden glow over the surroundings, bathing the area in a peaceful, calming aura. Knuckles was lost in deep contemplation, staring off into the distance as Shade fidgeted, her eyes repeatedly darting to him in an attempt to decipher his thoughts.

Shade couldn't bear the silence any longer. "Knuckles," she began hesitantly, "can I ask you something?"

Knuckles turned his gaze to her, his eyes narrowing as he regarded her thoughtfully. "Of course," he said, his voice deep and sonorous.

"Why did you save me?" Shade asked, the question tumbling out of her before she could think better of it. "I was your enemy, after all."

Knuckles let out a long, slow breath and closed his eyes for a moment, gathering his thoughts. When he opened them again, his eyes were filled with a deep, abiding kindness. "I saw the pain and suffering in your eyes," he said, his voice quiet but steady. "I saw that you were being used, just like I had been used once ago. I couldn't bring myself to let you die."

Shade was taken aback. She had never expected anyone, much less her former enemy, to show her such compassion. "But why?" she asked, her voice filled with wonder. "Why would you show kindness to someone like me?"

"Because we all deserve a second chance," Knuckles said, his eyes meeting hers. "We were caught up in a conflict that was bigger than both of us. And in that moment, I saw that we were more alike than different. All I could think about was putting aside our differences and helping you."

Shade was silent for a moment, the weight of Knuckles' words settling heavy on her heart. "Thank you, Knuckles," she said finally, her voice filled with gratitude. "I never expected anyone to show me such kindness."

Knuckles smiled, his eyes crinkling at the corners. "It's never too late to change, Shade," he said, his voice soft but firm. "We all make mistakes, but it's what we do after those mistakes that define us."

Shade nodded, feeling a sense of belonging that she had never experienced before. "I want to start over, Knuckles," she said, her eyes shining with determination. "I want to put the past behind us and start a new chapter, one where we're not enemies but allies."

Sonic Chronicles: Return Of The Dark Brotherhood: Prologue

The loneliness was once Tails' only dependable friend, there morning, noon and night. His childhood on West Side Island left him isolated. Others would tease him, call him names and even physically assault him just because they saw him as different. He once wanted nothing more than to be alone, but that all changed when a certain blue hedgehog came into his life. As time went on, Tails formed friendships with others, becoming a confident and brave hero.

But all that changed days ago. Now he was alone once more on this huge ship he himself constructed. Tails exhaled, watching as the steam of his breath vaporised into the cold air. His sky blue eyes veiled towards the large window claimed by the freezing temperatures. He could no longer see the outside world lest he wiped the windows clean from within, but Tails lost his motivation to do so days ago.

Damage to the Blue Typhoon forced the main generators to shut down. The only thing keeping the ship operational was the backup power. Darkness claimed most of the ship, the interior only illuminated by the gentle red rays of the emergency lights. His eyes averted towards the screen in front of him. The ship’s radar continued scanning for life, but the only objects that came into frame were the rocks from the asteroid field. The asteroids occasionally bounced against the ship. Tails once jolted at each bump, but he had since grown to tune the noise out.

He leaned back in the captain’s chair, solemnly gazing towards the condensated windows that blocked his line of sight from the infinite continuum of space. As time went on, the loneliness felt more like solitude, for one finds ways to cope. Yet to have real company of one who cared for him, that would be sweet indeed. He wanted to cry, to let the universe know of his grief. But any desire to cry had been pushed to the back of his mind long ago.

This loneliness was a vice on his heart, squeezing with just enough pressure to be a constant pain. It killed Tails every day just a little bit more, taking what was once his inner light and replacing it with a darkness that overshadows each moment. He was destined to die on this ship. Either the cold would eventually take him, or maybe the monsters that took his friends from him would return to finish the job. Sonic, Amy, Knuckles…

All gone.

When friends feel like paper chains in the rain and the sky holds nothing but the promise of more storms, life is lonely. When all Tails wanted is a hand to hold or an arm around his shoulders and none came, the world became cold and empty, a slow poison for the soul. Tails longed to be loved and nurtured, and to do the same for others. He was born to be in tribes with social bonds that last a lifetime. But now he would never see them again.

A soft beeping enraptured. His eyes widened, hastily bringing his attention back to the radar. A friendly tag appeared within the screen, the monitor alerting him of their approach. All traces of depression and loneliness faded away within an instant.

Without hesitation, Tails quickly grabbed the headset and placed it on his head. “Is anyone there?! Sonic? Is that you? Sonic? Amy? Knuckles?!”

No response, not even a static. Refusing to give up, Tails pressed his finger against the radar’s screen. The friendly tag hovered just over the ship. With renewed hope, Tails swiftly twirled his namesakes and reached the large window, hastily wiping away the condensation. The cold sensitization stained his gloves, yet Tails cared little for his condition any longer. He wiped away the substances as quickly as possible. The constellations of space shone as if they had been dreamed into the blue, but the vast universe didn’t surprise him any longer. A surprised gasp escaped Tails’ lungs as his eyes drew upon the figure.

“Shadow?”

The Ultimate Life Form floated absently outside of the cockpit, his black fur dangerously close to blending in with the universe. It was only thanks to his red streaks and white gloves he didn’t fully become one with the darkness. Even with the distance between them, Tails could see Shadow’s eyes were closed, suggesting he was unconscious or worse. Tails’ breathing accelerated with relief and concern, his trembling hand pressing against the headset once more.

“Shadow, can you hear me? Shadow?”

No response once again. Refusing to sit idly by while the dark hedgehog floated around, Tails made haste to brave the sub-zero temperatures of space. He hastily grabbed a small jetpack and strapped it tightly around his back, all the while sprinting towards the nearest airlock. The renowned hope he was experiencing began to leave him as fast as it came. There was no guarantee Shadow was even alive. For reasons no one could understand, mobians were immune to the effects of the vacuum of space, allowing them to still breathe. But this did nothing to protect them from the cold. If Tails didn’t act now, Shadow was in danger of freezing to death or being knocked around by one of the several asteroids.

Upon reaching the outside, Tails quickly activated the jetpack and ascended towards the lifeless hedgehog, all the while fighting the urge to shiver. His hands gently wrapped around Shadow’s waist, holding the dark hedgehog close before he returned to the ship. The airlock closed tightly behind them, allowing the artificial gravity to bring him back to stable ground. The sudden change of density forced Tails to assert more effort in carrying Shadow. He weighed almost the same as Sonic, allowing the young fox to carry him with minimal difficulty.

Tails twirled his namesakes and carried the dark hedgehog through the darkened hallways till they reached the medical bay. There Tails set Shadow down on one of the beds, finally releasing a loud exhale he unknowingly suppressed.

His hands tugged at Shadow’s shoulders, shaking him every so slightly. “Shadow?”

As his adrenaline slowed to a reasonable level, Tails’ rested the side of his head against Shadow’s chest. There was a heartbeat, faint and slow. He leaned back, checking for external injuries. The emergency lights only offered so much visibility, but as Tails’ eyes adjusted to the darkness, he caught the full extent of Shadow’s state. First-degree burns covered half his right arm, strongly hinting someone or something had hit him with an energetic force. But what stole Tails’ attention was the lack of Inhibitor Ring on Shadow’s right wrist.

Tails quickly theorised the lack of ring forced Shadow’s Chaos energy to grow unstable. Without both rings to keep his true power subdied, the end result left the dark hedgehog in a constant state of perpetual fatigue. This explained his unconscious state. His hand gently lifted Shadow’s arm, studying his wrist with consideration. Further burns surrounded the area. His ring hadn’t been simply removed in battle. The ring had been forced off by an unknown force.

Tails’ breathing faintly intensified, his hand finding itself pressing softly against his chest. “Okay, okay… Think… What can I do?”

He was a brilliant scientist in his own right, but even Tails didn’t quite know the true extent of Shadow’s creation. He was no medical doctor by any means either, only knowing a few tricks here and there for minor wounds. He closed his eyes, drowning out the world around him. The flashing of the emergency lights and the soft humming of the engines, all pushed to the back of his mind. He slowly inhaled, composting himself. Shadow needed his brilliant mind to recover, not a frightened child.

“Shadow’s ring…” Tails muttered, before snapping his fingers with renewed vigour. “Rouge!”

Tails raced out of the medical bay and reached the bedrooms in record time. He took no pleasure in breathing the privacy of others, even if it were his own ship. He raced inside the bedroom Rouge used, all the while silently praying his theory proved to be correct. The darkened room greatly reduced his visibility, forcing Tails to take a moment to adjust to the blackness. In the pitch black room came a glimmer of hope in the form of an Inhibitor Ring resting on the nightstand.

Tails snatched the ring and raced back to the medical bay. As expected, the dark hedgehog hadn’t moved in the slightest. The fox slowly approached, his footsteps against the metal surface creating a soft echo that reverberated around the room. He knelt down and gently raised Shadow’s wrist, pausing momentarily to consider his next move.

“I hope this works,” Tails whispered. “Hang on, Shadow.”

Without another word, Tails snapped on the Inhibitor Ring. The ring emitted a soft glow, its properties taking hold. The young scientist let out a startled yelp as Shadow’s eyes snapped open, forcing himself to jump back out of range. Shadow suddenly sat upright, his solid gaze frantically searching around the room. His cold and impassive demeanour casted towards Tails, all without saying a word. The dark hedgehog’s solid gaze ensnared Tails, staring him down intently.

A fearful expression plastered across Tails’ face, teeth clenched as he tried to steady his breathing. A part of him feared Shadow lost his memories once again. His stare was as uncomfortable as a chorus-girl corset and had the same effect on Tails’ breathing, constricted and shallow.

He backed away into a corner and shakily raised both hands, all the while trying to find his voice. “S-S-Shadow. It’s me, Tails.”

“Relax,” Shadow responded at last. “I haven’t forgotten who I am again, Tails.”

Tails breathed a sigh of relief, slowly approaching the dark hedgehog once more. “Are you okay?”

Shadow followed the fox’s concerned gaze, noting his injured arm. Simple movement forced his arm to tremble and send painful signals to his brain. “Not as bad as it looks. But do what you have to.”

Accepting that as permission to touch, Tails pulled the nearby tray to the bed and gently poured some medical substance on Shadow’s arm to clear away potential infection. Shadow winced as the medicine burned his injury, but he gritted his teeth and powered through. While he allowed Tails to tend to him, his eyes cast around the darkened room barely lit up by the emergency lights. “Tails. How long have I been out?”

“I was hoping you could tell me,” Tails admitted, as he set down the bottle and picked up some wipes to dry the arm. “You’re the first one I’ve seen in four days.”

A hint of surprise filled Shadow’s otherwise calm demeanour. “Four days?”

Tails hesitantly nodded. “I’ve been on my own since… Since it all happened.”

The young fox forced himself to turn away, biting down to conceal the growing waterfalls he could taste in the back of his throat. Tears wanted to make their escape, but he swallowed them back and held strong. Shadow caught onto the motion, deciding to choose his next words with extreme caution. He yearned to know everything that transpired in the past few days, but how he went about finding out the truth had to be taken with gentleness.

Shadow glanced over towards his arm still being held in Tails’ hands, taking note of the familiar accessory back in its place. “You made me another ring?”

“It’s your original one,” Tails explained, setting down the wipes and replacing them with a roll of bandages. He caught onto the curiosity mounting Shadow’s face, eagerly awaiting for an explanation. Now it was Tails’ turn to choose his words carefully. “That day on the ARK, after you fell towards the planet, Sonic grabbed one of your rings. He gave it to Rouge.”

“And she held onto it all this time,” Shadow spoke up with a gentle scoff, a semblance of a grin flickered onto his lips. “That smart girl.”

His expression suddenly hardened, his voice rising an octave higher. “Where is she?”

Tails paused in wrapping the bandages, slowly bringing his hesitant eyes upwards. “I don’t know.”

Reading Shadow’s demeanour was no easy feat. He masked all emotions well with that stern exterior of his, only occasionally grinning when he found genuine joy in something. He held his composure well, but even Tails caught onto the subtlest shift in his eyelids. Through the intensely calm and reserved exterior, his eyes held the smallest hints of concern. Tails knew how much Shadow cared for Rouge, even if Shadow himself would never outright admit it. But nothing could conceal his concern.

“Are they… Gone?” Shadow hesitantly asked, keeping his voice strong to retain the appearance of a fearless warrior.

Tails finally finished securing the bandages around Shadow’s arm, using the time to prolong the silence before he answered. He grabbed a bottle of painkillers and offered one to Shadow, who silently gestured them away, unwilling to consume any form of drugs. Tails knew Shadow was not a man of patience and would demand answers in no time.

“I really don’t know,” Tails admitted a second time, his voice watery and thick. “They might be captured, or worse.”

With a contemplative hum, Shadow summoned the strength to turn and press both feet against the floor. He shakily stood up, but forced himself to sit down seconds later. His injury, combined with how long had passed since he last stood on solid ground, left his legs feeling like jelly. As stubborn as he could be, Shadow knew he was in no condition to move around just yet. At least this created an opportunity to piece together past events.

Shadow’s amnesia of the past few days acted as a roadblock of sorts. There is something close yet hidden, yet Shadow cannot in that moment fathom what it could be. It's as if he was following a bread crumb trail and it ends. “The last thing I remember was… Meeting up with Sonic just before we left. What happened after that… I don’t know.”

Tails sighed and took a seat in the nearby armchair, hands resting in his lap while his namesakes curled around himself for comfort. “There was a big fight. All of you tried to fight them. Sonic told me to stay with the ship. One thing led to another and… I got stuck out here.”

Shadow glanced away, one hand rubbing against his temple. Despite the young fox’s comment, the visions of said events were clouded within his mind. “It’s all still a blur.”

Tails glanced down, stroking one of his namesakes as he thought back to where it all happened. He wanted to take away the power of the painful memory for hurt, prove to himself that he could choose to move on. So he took the one he loved the most with his best friend, recalling where we made a great memory, a happy one. Now when his brilliant brain goes back to the days leading up to these events, Tails divert it only to the good memory, the healing one. It's as if he wrote a good story over the top of a bad story, and in time the ink of the bad story fades away until only the good one remains.

He returned his remorseful expression to the Ultimate Life Form once more. “It all started one week ago…”
