Evening dress Callot Soeurs (French, active 1895–1937), 1925–26, French, cotton, silk, plastic & glass. | THE MET
Evening dress 1925, French, silk During the 1920s, nightlife ruled over the day. Men and women dressed for an evening out, filled with dinner, cocktails and dancing. Dress for women changed dramatically, as hemlines rose and waistlines dropped, creating a tubular silhouette. Ladies wearing these slightly revealing dresses, made of delicate fabrics and decorated with heavy beading were often referred to as flappers. This dress is a wonderful example of the style of the period. An unusual pattern of free-form elements concentrically outlined in clear beads enlivens this piece and the textured surface of the sequins creates an interesting play of light. THE MET

Dress, Norman Hartnell, c. 1924 - 1926 This embroidered satin dress in a Chinese style is one of Norman Hartnell's earliest known designs. Hartnell opened his couture house in Mayfair in 1923 and rapidly gained a reputation for making exquisite evening gowns. There is a strong streak of theatricality in all his clothes and Hartnell began his design career working for the theatre. He continued to design lavish gowns for actresses to wear on and off the stage throughout his life. | MUSEUM OF LONDON
