possibly most frustrating thing about the election is it apparently hinged on immigration of all things, which is just like... not even real! trump voters seem to really think that all of america's problems are caused by brown people crossing the border without the proper paperwork (they claim not to care about legal immigration!) and if we can just kick all of "them" out it'll somehow magically fix grocery prices and the housing crisis. none of that makes any sense. so ok sure we'll close the borders and torture a bunch of kids along the way again, cool, that's not going to doooooo anythinggggggg. like it will not help the average american whatsoever! I know I know I KNOW trump lies but this particular lie is just so idiotic. and it won him the election. well!
it's not. latino men switched to republicans in the double digits or more. the biggest shift in demographics.
it's about sexism. It's about a lot of people in this country who will not vote for a woman.
I mean, lots of latino men are here legally and don't necessarily identify with undocumented immigrants. "fuck you I got mine" is an extremely common viewpoint.
obviously an election is never going to boil down to just one thing but I'm basing this on an article where the reporter spoke to a bunch of people at a trump rally and they ALL brought up immigration (which also tracks with the misdirected texas republican political emails I sometimes get which talk about it constantly).
do I think misogyny played a huge part... uh, yeah, duh, I do. but like... also trump definitely has promised that he will fix the economy by kicking out migrants, and people definitely have believed it and they definitely have voted because of it. so.
