fucking australia’s trying to get everyone to link their government id to their social media accounts else you cant use them anymore, the actual fuck is wrong with this country

please, actually, get fucking mad over this, the entirety of australia basically just banned all social media for anyone who doesnt want to give up their privacy to the government, there was no vote on this, no nothing, they just went ahead and fucking passed this ridiculously privy law and barely anybody’s talking about it the actual fuck

okay so to actually explain what exactly is happening, it’s an age thing. theyve used ‘protect the children’ and ‘let kids be kids’ as a weapon again. anyone under 16 is banned from social media, but to enforce this they have openly admitted everyone will need to link their government id to their social media. this whole ‘protect the kids’ thing was a very obvious trojan horse for getting ppl to give up their privacy.

and yknow, that alone is a very shitty law even without the whole surrendering your private information to the government thing.

theyve made outside uninhabitable, there’s nowhere left to go. public areas have degenerated, theyve turned hanging out into a crime with loitering, streets feel unwalkable sometimes, parents are more wary of letting their kids walk around on their own than they used to be, and now theyre trying to ban one of the main ways kids manage to distract themselves inside the house.

when i was 15 i was depressed and lonely, unable to leave the house very far, no friends, nobody. the one place that helped me feel less alone was online communities. i wouldve killed myself if it werent for the support i recieved on there. and now theyre trying to ban that for future generations, in a world that hates them being both outside and inside.

and even still, this is still a fucking trojan horse to get you to give up your privacy.

Are they actually verifying the ID database? Because you can use genai to conjure up a fake ID card and upload it.

New Series: BlueSky Fandom Hacking

With BlueSky's growing fandom popularity + @essential-randomness love for AtProto (as those who ever mentioned it in her presence know), it's time for a new series: AtProto-based fandom shenanigans!

Join us this Thursday for some fandom labeler hacking: https://www.twitch.tv/essentialrandomness

To get started, we'll build a "what type of fujoshi are you?" labeler, based on the famous animals classifications!

To do this, we'll start our friend's Alice labeler starter kit and use it as a jumping point to learn more about how AtProto works. https://github.com/aliceisjustplaying/labeler-starter-kit-bsky

If we have time we'll explore a dead dove ☠️🕊️ account labeler, and how that relates to block/mute lists (suggest topics you'd want to warn for!).

If we don't have time...we'll do it another day! The plan is to dedicate one weekly stream to AtProto for the next 2 months, so we have time to have fun!

Stay tuned for more plans after this stream! You can follow us for announcements, or @essential-randomness directly.

Friends,

with so many fujoshi (and fujin!! and friends!!) moving to bluesky, I can finally justify something I've wanted to do for a long time: AtProto hacking!

Join me on twitch Thursday and let's start with labelers! Come explore what's possible and let's get the collective brain juices flowing!!

I attended a seminar on Legal Issues and the LGBTI community and one HILARIOUS side effect of same sex marriage getting legalised was in reality…horrible for estate planning and property disputes, but also sounds like an incredible fic premise

Before same sex marriage was legal a fair few gay couples got married in foreign countries; it had no effect in Australia but it was the principle of the thing. When it became legal, their marriages took effect in Aussie too.

This was wonderful for couples who were still together, but for couples who had broken up, and hadn’t bothered to go back to that foreign country to get divorced (and they rarely did)…they suddenly found themselves married again.

Oh, it gets better than that!! There was a panel on a similar topic at Lavender Law a few years back. In the US specifically, we had that time period where there were just a few states that had legalized same-sex marriage, and then Obergefell happened and it’s legal everywhere! Yay! EXCEPT. A very similar problem cropped up.

See, people had gotten married in Massachusetts when it legalized same-sex marriage, but then they broke up with that person and didn’t get a divorce because it wasn’t really real, right? So they got together with someone else, maybe moved in between, and decided to get married when California legalized. And then they broke up. And didn’t get a divorce. Because it wasn’t really real; it’s only in that state, right? (And no, there isn’t a good country-wide system to check these things.) So then they got together with someone else, and hey, it’s legal to get married in New York, we’ll do that! …and then they broke up. (Sensing a pattern yet?)

But then. Obergefell. Your marriage is recognized in EVERY state! Yay! Except… you have three or four marriages, actually. Concurrently. Which is, y’know. Illegal. AND one or more of your spouses could now be also married to yet another person, or people, if they did the same thing. Who could then also… (you get the picture).

Apparently there were a NUMBER of VERY BUSY family lawyers and estate planners untangling the absolute mess people created by getting married in multiple states to different people during that period.

So basically: Someone PLEASE give me the ensemble cast who are all, somehow, simultaneously married to each other. It is my dream, okay. XD

Oh, I could be the quirky chorus in a version of this.

Two of my older friends got civilly unioned in VT, then later married in MA. But one half was not from the US and needed an expeditious Green Card, so got straight married in NY to a mutual. And then behold! The couple was revealed as being bizarrely racist and I started backing away from them slowly. And then they started fighting with each other about their collective racism. US Cit was racist about LatAms but was Jewish. And Green card boy was white Brazilian and racist about other LatAms, but had a few *awkward* opinions about Jews. But what they were *really* fighting about was the tension over the hot twink they were both fucking. And then while they were scorching the social circle with their shenanigans and not paying attention to the legal haps, DOMA was reversed while the MA gay marriage and the NY marriage were valid. And USA threatened to dob Brazil in for a fraudulent Green card marriage. But by then Dr. SO had threatened me within an inch of my life for still hanging out with the booze, coke and party fucking crowd. So I bailed.

I haven’t even looked in that direction all these years for fear of finding out what happened there.

possibly most frustrating thing about the election is it apparently hinged on immigration of all things, which is just like... not even real! trump voters seem to really think that all of america's problems are caused by brown people crossing the border without the proper paperwork (they claim not to care about legal immigration!) and if we can just kick all of "them" out it'll somehow magically fix grocery prices and the housing crisis. none of that makes any sense. so ok sure we'll close the borders and torture a bunch of kids along the way again, cool, that's not going to doooooo anythinggggggg. like it will not help the average american whatsoever! I know I know I KNOW trump lies but this particular lie is just so idiotic. and it won him the election. well!

it's not. latino men switched to republicans in the double digits or more. the biggest shift in demographics.

it's about sexism. It's about a lot of people in this country who will not vote for a woman.

I mean, lots of latino men are here legally and don't necessarily identify with undocumented immigrants. "fuck you I got mine" is an extremely common viewpoint.

obviously an election is never going to boil down to just one thing but I'm basing this on an article where the reporter spoke to a bunch of people at a trump rally and they ALL brought up immigration (which also tracks with the misdirected texas republican political emails I sometimes get which talk about it constantly).

do I think misogyny played a huge part... uh, yeah, duh, I do. but like... also trump definitely has promised that he will fix the economy by kicking out migrants, and people definitely have believed it and they definitely have voted because of it. so.

States where ballot selfies are illegal

  • Florida
  • Georgia
  • Illinois
  • Massachusetts
  • Missouri
  • Nevada
  • New York
  • North Carolina
  • Ohio
  • South Carolina
  • South Dakota
  • Tennessee
  • Texas
  • West Virginia

States where ballot selfies are legal (do not disrupt polling places and respect the privacy of others)

  • Alabama
  • Arkansas
  • California
  • Colorado
  • Connecticut
  • District of Columbia
  • Hawaii
  • Iowa
  • Kansas
  • Kentucky
  • Louisiana
  • Michigan
  • Montana
  • Nebraska
  • New Hampshire
  • New Mexico
  • North Dakota
  • Oklahoma
  • Oregon
  • Rhode Island
  • Utah
  • Vermont
  • Virginia
  • Washington
  • Wyoming

States where it’s complicated

  • Alaska: Alaska law prohibits voters from exhibiting their ballots “to an election official or any other person so as to enable any person to ascertain how the voter marked the ballot.” However, different rules apply to Anchorage residents. The Anchorage Assembly passed Title 28 in February allowing you to “post your ballot, [but] the code does still prohibit showing that picture to anyone while within 200 feet of a polling location.”
  • Arizona: In Arizona, you can’t take photos within a 75-foot perimeter of a polling place, but this does leave open taking photos of your absentee ballot.
  • Delaware: The New York Times reported in 2018 that ballot selfies are not permitted in Delaware, “where Elaine Manlove, the state’s election commissioner, said signs would be posted banning cellphone use even though there is no law addressing it.” CNN confirmed in 2018 reporting that there are no laws prohibiting the practice, but that officials discouraged cellphone use at the polls.
  • Idaho: I spoke with Deputy Secretary of State Chad Houck, who told me that while he doesn’t believe there is any statute on the books, the state’s constitution requires a secret ballot.
  • Indiana: In October 2015, US District Judge Sarah Evans Barker “issued a preliminary injunction” after Indiana tried to make posting a ballot selfie a felony, reports the Indianapolis Star. The secretary of state’s office didn’t return a request for comment, so it’s unclear if this injunction is still in place, though CNN reported in 2018 that it was.
  • Maine: The Associated Press reported in 2016 that “the secretary of state discourages ballot selfies because there’s a ban on making unauthorized ballot copies, but there’s no law against voters posting photos of their marked ballots.”
  • Maryland: The state Board of Elections says “you cannot use your cell phone, pager, camera, and computer equipment in an early voting center or at a polling place.” I couldn’t find any laws against photographing your absentee ballot, but I wasn’t able to confirm that with the Maryland Board of Elections.
  • Minnesota: The secretary of state’s website writes “there is no law that strictly prohibits taking photos or videos in the polling place to record your own voting experience.” But it then goes on to say “Minnesota Statutes 204C.17 and Minnesota Statutes 204C.18 prohibit voters from showing their marked ballot to others. Taking photographs or video of your own marked ballot could violate this prohibition.”
  • Mississippi: Leah Smith from the secretary of state’s office told CNN in 2018 that while “there’s no law against taking photos at the polling place ... the state prohibits a voter from showing his or her marked ballot to another person.”
  • New Jersey: While there’s no prohibiting law on the books, the secretary of state’s office “views voting booth selfies as a violation of the existing law against disrupting a polling place and identifying a voter’s cast ballot.”
  • Pennsylvania: The secretary of state’s website says that each county can “set their own policy regarding electronic devices in the polling place” and that you’ll see posted signage if your county prohibits it. Additionally, the website recommends you “wait until after you leave the polling place” to post the photos online.
  • Wisconsin: CNN reports in 2018 that Michael Haas of the state election commission said “yes, you may take a selfie, but workers may ask you to stop if you are creating a distraction. They also really suggest you don’t post a selfie with your marked ballot. You won’t get in trouble, but it will raise questions as to whether someone paid you to do so.”

Click the link above for details pertaining to each mentioned state.

As in OP's tags, I recommend not posting ballot selfies or publicizing the fact that you've taken one. Esp as posting ballot selfies publicly gives disinfo jerks raw material from which to work. And cop jerks a reason to fuck w you.
