Donal Finn is really selling me on a Mat whose most basic impulse really is investigation. He wants to know!!! He's a racoon in a burrow pawing through the rubbish looking for shiny things!
It's so easy for outsiders to dismiss Mat as shallow or lackadaisical, but Ishamael did a real number on Mat by recognising the soul of a compassionate man who's terribly frightened that he cannot do good. And Mat is Like That because he's kind of a brutal knower of things. He didn't dismiss dark things easily. The potential for how things could be - but in the worst sense - sticks with him.
The old line that we always believe we're better than we are, and that the future will be better than the past - Mat isn't the kind to believe that. Unfortunately, mostly about himself.
Anyway. I'm just really enjoying the character most obviously modeled on Odin being helplessly attracted to mysteries, shiny things, and self-knowledge.
He's going to suffer for it. And then he's going to learn nothing, and go straight back to doing the exact same thing all over again.
