Why Does President Obama Have to Be “Half as Black and Twice As Good”?
When Trayvon Martin, an unarmed African-American teenager, was killed in Florida by George Zimmerman, Obama said only that his thoughts were with Martin’s family, that the incredible tragedy made him think about his own kids, that “every parent in America should be able to understand why it is absolutely imperative that we investigate every aspect of this …” He also said, “If I had a son, he’d look like Trayvon.” Those words were enough to send the conservative wing of this country into a tailspin. Before the president spoke on the subject, the reaction to the tragedy crossed party lines. Conservatives stayed silent, or offered lukewarm support for a full investigation. The moment the president opened his mouth, national mourning was over. Politics took over. Conservative talk-radio hosts and conservative websites tried to vilify Martin, and tried to spin President Obama’s empathy into something dangerous for white America. Newt Gingrich asked, “Is the president saying that if it had been a white who had been shot, that would be okay because it wouldn’t look like him?” No. That was not what he was saying. But the words, coming out of his black mouth, backed with the power attached to his black body, infuriated and scared the shit out of some of white America. The president became a human trigger. What could be a more effective silencer on the issue of race, for him and for his staff, than that?

Trayvon Martin went to the corner store to pick up candy and iced tea the night of Feb. 26 and never came back. His murderer is known but still hasn’t been arrested. Read more about the case here.
I can’t get these details out of my head: Skittles, iced tea, and a black hoodie. Had he been white, this would’ve been just another trip to the corner store.

- He called the police because Trayvon was black.
- He jumped out of his car because Trayvon was black.
- He got into a physical altercation with Trayvon because Trayvon was black.
- He shot Trayvon in the chest because Trayvon was black.
- He told police afterwards that he felt threatened by Trayvon because Trayvon was black.
- The veracity of George Michael Zimmerman’s account of how he came to murder Trayvon Martin wasn’t questioned by police
- because George Michael Zimmerman wasn’t black.
George Michael Zimmerman is clearly a paranoid racist. The police department in Sanford has a well documented history of ignoring or covering up crimes against non-whites that are committed by whites.
Trayvon Martin was running away from a person who was following him in an SUV. That person then murdered him, because that person is a paranoid racist with a gun.
Occam’s Razor, people. This isn’t complicated and it’s appalling that almost a month after Trayvon Martin was murdered, George Michael Zimmerman is still walking around as a free — and armed — man.
George Michael Zimmerman should be in jail right now, and the police department in Sanford should be under federal investigation. This outrageous “stand your ground” law needs to be overturned. Not tomorrow, not in a week, not in a month.
Right.
Fucking.
