One of my favourite things when reading fanfiction is when you click with an author's style so much that you adore the fanfiction you're reading, and once it's over you need more. So you go to their page and hope that there's more for any fandom you might know- only there isn't any. They've written for other fandoms you aren't familiar with and never would've thought about before.

But you're down so bad for their style and talent that they got you wading in like:

“Ew you’re an adult why are you in fandom” Kid, if being mocked for fandom shit wasn’t enough to stop me when I was an actual 15 year old, hearing it from a 15 year old when I’m 30 is genuinely hilarious

It is kind of amusing when teenagers think their highschool peer pressure shit is going to work on adults. Like, lol you have no power here fetus. My mortgage is a bigger emotional threat to me than you are.

Cringe culture no longer works on me. I was PEAK cringe. You know nothing of the early days

You merely adopted the cringe

I was born in it, molded by it

newsflash for everyone in this thread: minors are allowed to be uncomfortable with adults in spaces they frequent and it’s not a personal attack against you when a minor in fandom spaces in uncomfortable with adults in those spaces

Then they can leave the space?? They don’t own that shit.

I’m not gonna stop posting fandom shit at 23 years old bc some 14yr old feels “weird” about it, brat can hit the block button and get off my blog lmao

you, a 23 year old, reblogged this from a 15 year old onto a blog with “smut” in the url

fuck off, creep. follow your own advice and get the hell off my blog.

adults leave children alone and let us have our own space please

Well, then go away? Leave fandom on tumblr, AO3 etc. and create your own space? Because as much as you don’t want to hear it, adults created fandom, and it’s kids who then came and wanted in.

The entitlement coming from you minors on this post makes me feel sick. Block people you don’t wanna see, use the screening option ffs. Get off your “I don’t wannnnnaaaaa seeee addults wahhhh” high horse, damn

Adults: *in their own lane**created the damned lane**happily cruising along at 69 mph**waving to other adult motorists as they pass**having an all around pleasant drive*

Minors: *in their ‘student driver’ vehicles, blasting onto the highway you built, merging without right of way, forgetting to use their turn signal, cutting you off* Get off the road, grandma!

I’ll leave fandoms when I’m a corpse in the ground and not a moment sooner.

Well if this whole post doesn’t perfectly summarize the problem with modern geek culture.

Child: Get out of muh fandom, old timer!

Adult, who built and supported the fandom before the child was even born:

What exactly makes those people “uncomfortable”? The sole fact that adults have hobbies and media they love and that they participate in fandom activities?

I am not talking about “staring conflicts”, “being rude” or worse things.

People are uncomfortable that other people who are older just exist in public space (and I consider fandom being a public thing)?? The fuck?

Wow, what an atrocity. Everybody knows that you should leave fandom when you’re 20 years old, no interests for you, no fun! (No, fuck this mentality actually)

We were nerds in the era where that got you shunned and bullied, your baby tantrums mean nothing to us.

What’s baffling for me about the modern fandom babies is their obsession with morality.

When I was a kid, moral guardians kept presenting every geeky thing as morally questionable at best, or downright amoral:

Computer games - inciting violence

Dungeons and Dragons - promoting satanism

Popular YA Literature - not “real” literature and various problems depending on the title (for example satanism with Harry Potter)

Cartoons - stupefying / toilet humour and/or inciting violence

Anime - sexually perverse and/or inciting violence

Comics - stupefying at best

Because of that nowadays, whenever a toddler starts a rant why Title X is morally problematic I automatically block out the noise, because I’ve been dealing with self-righteous bullies like them all my life.

There’s a reason I repeat “dare to offend” while writing. Question is: who am I afraid of now?

💥🙌👏

Well shit, Henry Jenkins, out here in 1997 dropping truth bombs

Oh hey I need this for a research paper I'm writing, thank you!

i mean he had been out here since 1988 dropping such bombs:

"'fandom' is a vehicle of marginalized subcultural groups (women, the young, gays, etc.) to pry open space for their cultural concerns within dominant representations; it is a way of appropriating media texts and rereading them in a way that serves different interests, a way of transforming mass culture into a popular culture"

Jenkins, Henry. “Star Trek Rerun, Reread, Rewritten: Fan Writing as Textual Poaching.” Critical Studies in Mass Communication 5, no. 2 (1988): 85–107. https://doi.org/10.1080/15295038809366691.

there are even some earlier works in fan studies but that’s what i have ready to hand.

Fandoms are Beautiful

they make

us

laugh

and they

make us

cry

but they teach us love

hope

and friendship

and that even

when

we fall

they will always be there

to pick us back up

so get up

brush yourself off

and smile

we’ll always be here to catch you when you fall

Why does this not have more notes?

#FOREVER REBLOG

this for real made me tear up

All of the feels!

even in fandoms people feel the need to fit everyone into a box. we have to identify as shippers and stans of certain pairings/characters and if we critize or dislike something about said ship/character people tell us but you ship/stan them, you can’t do that. you need to play your part in this, you need to ship/stan them; you’re not allowed to change your mind.

Exactly. I hate that this happens. Why do we always have to hate on each other when we have differing opinions? Why can't we just live and let live, think and let think, say and let say, ship and let ship?

Fandoms Meeting.

Doctor Who: I would like to call this meeting to-
Lord of the Rings: Why are you in charge? I mean, your show is the oldest, but I was around a decade before you, and Sherlock Holmes has been around since the 1880's. If we're going off fandom age, Doctor, Sherlock should be in charge.
Doctor Who: You're usually the rational one, but have you gone mad? Because of BBC, Sherlock is, well, not like he used to be.
Sherlock: *sitting in the corner rocking back and forth* 18 months, 18 months, 18 months, 18 months, 18 months, 18 months-
Harry Potter: We know Sherlock, we know. It's been almost 2 years for us too, except we've finished, You have somehing left at least. We don't.
Doctor Who: If you don't mind, we have an issue we need to discuss-
Supernatural: If you're all quite done being English, the Doctor has something to say!
Avengers: Calm down SPN, it isn't the end of the World he's announcing. But if it is, I know some great heroes that can help you out.
Hetalia: America's the hero! He'll save you!
Black Butler: Promise a demon your soul and you won't need heroes, he'll save you.
Supernatural: Did somebody say demon?! *salt at the ready*
Doctor Who: There's something really important I need to tell you!
Sherlock: 18 months, 18 months, 18 months, 18 months, 18 months-
Supernatural: Is he possessed? I mean, my show had it's season finale recently and I'm not like that!
Sherlock: *jumps on the table* Your eye is twitching, a sign of nerves, and you looked up into the upper left corner of your eye before saying that, only for a second, but it's enough to prove you're lying. You have been in the state or hysetria that I'm currently in, you're just good at hiding your emotions!
Lord of the Rings: He's doing it again. Sherlock, that's enough deducting for now. Last time, you found out that Homestuck and Hetalia have a 'mutual respect' thing going on.
Homestuck: People hate on our fandoms, we stick together. We never made it not obvious.
Hetalia: We're moirails, where have you guys been? (pases Homestuck some pasta)
Doctor Who: IF WE ARE ALL QUITE DONE! *cough* Are we just going to ignore him in the seat near the end of the table?
*everyone looks to said seat*
Hannibal: Hello, my name is Hannibal. My show is new. I brought food if anybody would like some? I made it myself.
