So I looked at editing services for my novel today...

… and now I need to have a good cry. The editor I’d like to work with (because my favorite authors use her and she sounds awesome) would charge around $2000 for line editing a manuscript of around 100.000 words. Of course that figure is just a guideline, but it’s not likely to cost less than that.

Proofreading would of course be on top of that and cost $500. A bargain.

A good cover will cost at least $400 if I use a professional service.

I absolutely get why it has to cost this much. The price is more than fair given the amount of work involved, and a good editor is worth her weight in gold. I still feel the need to curl up in a corner and cry quietly to myself for a week or two.

I’m going to suggest here that unless you DO happen to have the money to drop for those services, that you go the el cheapo route.

Which is Fiverr.

You can get a pretty damn good cover designed for not very much $$$ at all. There are other companies out there selling (really nice) ‘premade’ covers for $50 or less. I’m too cheapskate even for that so I make my own and they cost me $5 or less each - which probably shows. When and if I start getting decent returns from my writing, I will probably go back and get them all nice new professionally made covers, but right now I need my writing to pay ME, not the other way around.

I don’t know about editing services on Fiverr but you can probably get someone at $5 per thousand words for line by line (or maybe more words, who knows) which for a 100k word novel brings it out around $500. Look at reviews to see what other customers are saying before picking someone. Ditto for proofreading.

Another option is to join some writer’s forums and look at ‘help I need a cheap but good editor’ threads!

HELP CAPTAIN SWANNERS?!?

There was this FABULOUS manip edit, that I loved, that I wanted to reblog, but my internet crashed and now I can't find it!

It was in three panels. The top two were a first kiss, and the final one was a sort of "morning after" snuggle in bed.

SOMEONE PLEASE SEND ME THE LINK!

I loved it.

Might write a response to it.

Thank you kindly!
