Watching a super hero movie directed by a woman is like putting glasses on for the first time.

I didn’t realize how much I had to squint through the “male gaze” till suddenly, miraculously, I didn’t have to.

There were absolutely NO eye candy shots of Diana. There were Amazons with ageing skin and crows feet and not ONE of them wore armor that was a glorified corset. When Diana did the superhero landing, her thigh jiggled onscreen.

Did you hear me? HER FUCKING THIGH JIGGLED. Wonder Woman’s thigh jiggled on a 20-foot tall screen in front of everyone.

Because she wasn’t there to make men drool. She wasn’t there to be sexy and alluring and flirt her way to victory, and that means she has big, muscular thighs, and when they absorb the impact of a superhero landing, they jiggle, and.that’s.WONDERFUL.

Thank you, Patty Jenkins, for giving me a movie about a woman, told by a woman,so I can see it through my eyes, not some dude bro who’s there for boobs and butts.

Also the way the Amazons fought was the best thing ever, because it felt so REAL. Real female warriors (they hired women athletes to portray some of the Amazons) fighting, taking hits, and making noises of pain that didn’t sound inherently sexual.

Also, the most refreshing thing was that not one of them did the *kill a man by wrapping my thighs around his neck* thing that Black Widow does. Not to say this isn’t a real style of fighting or that it is out of character for BW to use it, I was just waiting for the gratuitously sexy shot of Wonder Woman taking a man down by wrapping her legs around his head.

I didn’t see that. And I’m eternally grateful I didn’t.

Also, the Amazon general (I forgot her name, but she’s played by Robin Wright) had a very, very visible scar on her arm, presumably from a former battle. A woman general who, rather than being ~sexy~, has SCARS. i was soooo happy.

I’m so glad people keep adding to this post! Antiope (Robin Wright) was one of my favorite characters! The Amazons fighting was so unique - not big crushing masculine sword swinging, and not seductive, hip-swinging sexy fighting like most female fighters in movies.

It’s athletic and lithe and powerful and I have never felt so powerful and alive as I did during that sequence.

A lot of people have said it didn’t push far enough, and I respect that. But this movie is an important step. It’s not groundbreaking in many ways - the story is predictable, the romance is obvious, they basically removed the obvious cleavage maker and left her costume fundamentally the same.

But in terms of making a *superhero* movie that makes me feel empowered and amazing in my own skin - that’s not just groundbreaking. It’s liberating. It matters because it’s a blockbuster action film where I saw a female hero who was three-dimensional and whose sexuality wasn’t a turning point in her story. She wasn’t super-sexy-temptress hero. She wasn’t shy-sweetheart-who-takes-off-her-glasses-so-a-man-decides-she-is-worth-notice. She wasn’t naive-doe-eyed-virgin-who-needs-a-man-to-teach-her-the-pleasures-of-the-flesh. She was smart and strong and principled and loved babies and didn’t understand why speaking her mind was considered a scandal, and went on a journey to understanding that didn’t hinge on her *sexual* reaction to a man or a man’s to her, but hinged on her understanding of people as whole, fallible, humans.

Maybe it’s a little thing, but it takes many, many little things like this that are noticed and celebrated and supported for change to be made in the industry.
