'A powerful government workers' union will end its support for the United Negro College Fund after the group accepted $25 million from the conservative powerhouse Koch brothers and the college fund's president appeared at a Koch event. In a letter made public Thursday, the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees said it will no longer partner with or raise funds for the fund, known for its iconic motto, "A mind is a terrible thing to waste."'

'...the belief that students were often blocked from living up to their potential by the presence of certain fears and anxieties and doubts...These feelings were especially virulent at moments of educational transition—like the freshman year of high school or the freshman year of college. And they seemed to be particularly debilitating among members of groups that felt themselves to be under some special threat or scrutiny: women in engineering programs, first-generation college students, African-Americans in the Ivy League.'

The negative thoughts took different forms in each individual...but they mostly gathered around two ideas. One set of thoughts was about belonging. Students in transition often experienced profound doubts about whether they really belonged—or could ever belong—in their new institution. The other was connected to ability. Many students believed in what Carol Dweck had named an entity theory of intelligence—that intelligence was a fixed quality that was impossible to improve through practice or study.

...the University of California still struggles to build an undergraduate student body that fully reflects the diversity of the state. Across the university, the percentages of African Americans and Native Americans enrolled in 2012 remained lower than the corresponding percentages in 1995. The percentage of Latino students has increased but not enough to keep pace with the explosive growth of Latino high school graduates. The problem is most severe in our graduate schools, which educate the professionals who will serve California’s increasingly diverse population in the decades to come. At times, the entering classes at some of our medical schools have not had a single African American student...

'A tone-deaf inquiry into an Asian-American’s ethnic origin. Cringe-inducing praise for how articulate a black student is. An unwanted conversation about a Latino’s ability to speak English without an accent...'

...not exactly the language of traditional racism, but in an avalanche of blogs, student discourse, campus theater and academic papers, they all reflect the murky terrain of the social justice word du jour—microaggressions—used to describe the subtle ways that racial, ethnic, gender and other stereotypes can play out painfully in an increasingly diverse culture.

Take care of yourself. Talk to people who know you and love you...tell them what happened. Accept that it’s not your fault. A lot of people still think, 'Oh, well, I thought I was being nice but they misinterpreted,' or 'I just wanted to be friendly,' or 'I was trying to be a good employee,' or 'Maybe I should have worn something different.' But you are not to be blamed because someone else misbehaved. Then you can prepare yourself to come forward. Know what the institutional policies are, whether it’s a college or a workplace or any other organization. Take the steps to learn what the processes are, who to go see, what an investigation is going to look like, what kind of evidence you need to be able to convince people of what’s happening, and the potential outcomes. Having that knowledge is important. These things can be all-consuming. You get to a point where you can feel like you are defined by this thing that is happening to you, that you didn’t choose, that somebody imposed on you. That’s when I say, go back to those people who love you and care about you and realize that this is something that is happening to you. It is not who you are. You are not a victim. You are a whole human being with a lot of skills and a lot of gifts that will define who you are, and you should refuse to be defined by an incident. Remember those things that made you who you were before it happened.

...only 30% of the nation's fast-food labor force currently falls into the 16-19 age range, while 31% are 20-24 and the rest are 25 and older. More than a quarter of these workers are raising at least one child. Nearly 85 percent of non-teenage employees have already earned their high-school diploma, while approximately one-third have at least some college education.

Our love for college football is being converted to cash in a big way. As traditions are sold out and billions of dollars are traded on the students’ backs...

...it is hard not to feel like you’re abetting a fraud. It may be too late to save college football, but perhaps the lessons from its corruption might help us rescue other critical social institutions before they are sold off for spare parts.

After you interview me for a job, I visit a pantry for food...I have bathed in public restrooms. I have slept in emergency room lobbies. I have cried myself asleep with one eye open to protect myself and my remaining property. What does homeless look like? I am not disheveled or haggard if and when we meet. I am now a jobless woman trying to get back on my feet. So don't become confused about what you see just because I am not pushing all my belongings in a shopping cart down the street. I am the new face of homeless! It is I! It is me! The college-educated woman broken and lonely trying to get back on my feet!

'That idea of a college student spending four luxurious, carefree years studying is passe...'

...Of the more than 20 million students enrolled at thousands of two- and four-year colleges and universities across the nation, only about one-third fit that...description. About 40 percent of all college students are older than 25...More than a third attend classes part-time. Nearly 20 percent work full-time. About 60 percent enroll at four-year public and private schools, while the rest mostly attend community colleges or...for-profit colleges. Very few attend the well-known universities topping the U.S. News and World Report rankings...the number of international students increased 35 percent between 2000 and 2012...[colleges] are going after “nontraditional” students...To be considered nontraditional, students must have at least one of these characteristics: delayed attending college, attends school part-time, works at least 35 hours a week, is financially independent, supports a family, is a single parent or did not earn a formal high school degree.

...interns are everywhere. The bellboy carrying luggage...the monorail “pilot” steering a train at forty miles per hour, the...young woman scanning tickets...They corral visitors into line for Space Mountain, dust sugar over funnel cakes, sell mouse ears, sweep up candy wrappers...Disney runs one of the world’s largest internship programs. Each year, between 7,000 and 8,000 college students and recent graduates work full-time, minimum-wage, menial internships...typical stints last four to five months, but the “advantage programs” may last up to seven months. Rather than offer traditional summer internships, Disney’s schedule is determined by the company’s manpower needs, requiring students to temporarily suspend their schooling or continue it on Disney property and on Disney terms. The interns work entirely at the company’s will without sick days or time off, without grievance procedures, without guarantees of workers’ compensation or protection against harassment or unfair treatment...in certain parts of the park, at certain times of day, they comprise more than 50 percent of staff.

On Wednesday, the Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit affirmed a lower court's ruling that gaming giant Electronic Arts, Inc. cannot use the physical likeness of collegiate athletes without compensating them...This ruling over EA's First Amendment defenses, has the potential to bring with it a sea of change to both the gaming industry and collegiate sports. The initial lawsuit was brought by former NCAA athlete and Arizona State quarterback Samuel Keller to stop EA from using his physical likeness without pay. For years...EA has used avatars...These avatars have the exact same height, weight, skin tone, hair color and style, handedness, home state, play style...visor preference, facial features, school year and jersey number as the...player they are standing in for...Every year, EA sends highly specific questionnaires to college equipment managers to get details on their rosters.

bold, ours. game, changed.
