People gravitate away from conflict which usually leaves the platform for the minority of bigots to dominate. We see that in our politics. We see that at our churches. We see that in our corporations. If more people got the courage to step up to the plate, not only on racial issues but socioeconomic issues, society would be much more tolerant, inclusive, and fair. Everyone must go out on a limb and step up to the plate.

Unfortunately, the American conception of equality seems to operate on a sixth-grade level. We understand that disparate treatment is wrong, but we have a harder time reckoning with more insidious forms of bigotry. We believe we're a meritocracy and that as long as there aren't laws directly marginalizing certain groups of people, then our nation is a fair one where all of us have equal opportunities. Much of the public and many of our courts are sympathetic to relatively simplistic arguments based on legal equality: laws that treat some people differently than others are bad. [I will] stop being surprised that whenever I say anything in public about racism or white privilege, I get called a “kike” or a “race baiter”...After comments about white privilege that I made on MSNBC and CNN, and after the piece I wrote...about Quentin Tarantino’s “Django Unchained,” I was treated to a barrage of bigoted and anti-semitic Facebook posts and emails. For some bizarre reason, I was surprised by this. But here’s the thing: getting called a “kike” or a “race baiter” for daring to mention obvious truths about is gross, offensive and appalling. One thing it is not, though, is surprising in a country with such a persistent tradition of bigotry.
