Earlier this month, a side-by-side of Boys' Life and Girls' Life went viral, showing the sexist differences between the two. After controversy ensued, designer Katherine Young took it upon herself to redesign the Girls' Life cover — and the version is pretty great. Girl's Life magazine defended itself with a tone-deaf response.

CRWN is a new magazine devoted to natural hair — and it’s a f*cking dream come true

At this year's Afropunk Festival in Brooklyn, New York, people milled about between sets from Ice Cube, Janelle Monáe and TV on the Radio by booths selling jewelry by black artisans or comic books starring black characters. There were shops for soap and African foldable flats and art and candles — something for everybody.

But tucked into one booth over the weekend, was something special. In one booth, there were the first few copies of the first issue of CRWN, a lifestyle magazine for natural hair and the women who wear it, up for grabs.

It might not seem like a radical idea, after all there are magazines devoted to seemingly everything under the sun from cats to yarn, but with stories about natural hair (both the celebration of and attempts to curb it) popping up more frequently than ever, an outlet devoted entirely to the topic feels all the more prescient.

The idea for CRWN started with a conversation back in 2014.

Weeks after coming up with the idea for a new kind of girls' magazine, Erin Bried — who'd spent her career working in magazines, at places like Self and Glamour and Women's Sports & Fitness — launched a Kickstarter campaign to raise money and gauge interest for a new kind of girl -centric magazine. The results were overwhelming. Follow @this-is-life-actually

FabUplus is the world’s first health and fitness magazine specifically for curvy women! It launched in June and opposed to hyping stories about "flat abs" or "how to get lean and sexy in 15 minutes," its stories include "secrets to self love" and "how to live your best life now." The magazine’s founder Shannon Svingen-Jones hopes it will serve plus size women in one way above all else.

From Beyonce on Vogue, to Serena Williams on New York, September saw an encouraging number of black women on magazine covers. Magazines don't usually feature so many women of color on their covers. In fact, they typically barely feature them at all. Hannah, which is currently being funded on Kickstarter, is a magazine that wants to put black women first.
