Busking tips: Quince
I thought at first that this was one of those close-up detail shots of a Renaissance painting.
I’ve learned a new song! Brenda Stubbert’s Reel seems to be the perfect minor pairing for St. Kilda Wedding. If anyone has any song requests, preferably in the folky fiddly realm of things, I would love to hear about it! Enjoy~
The most talented young fiddler I know! She's been sick lately, so I'm delighted to see her feeling better and fiddlin' like a champ!
This guy again, because he’s still pretty awesome.
This guy IS awesome! His name is Emery Carl, and in addition to being a Pike Place Market standby and a consummate performer, he is also a complete and utter sweetheart. I ran into him on the bus once, and he started telling me about how he used to be a youth pastor, a job he quit to busk full-time. "I traded a faith-based income for a faith-based income, you know what I mean?"
"PLEASE HELP ME BUY A BEE SUIT." It was all I could do not to give this kid all the cash I had on me.
Clarinetist Nicholas Oeconomacos with Children, Seattle, 1931
The uniquely flamboyant clarinetist from Greece, Nicholas Oeconomacos, graced the streets of Seattle with his clarinet playing. Although receiving accolades from Seattle Symphony conductor Homer Hadley and John Philip Sousa after having played under both, he returned to Seattle during the Great Depression to play for change on the streets. He also played under two fluted columns in the garden next to his ornate Cascade neighborhood home.
In this 1931 photograph, Oeconomacos is playing for two young children, possibly in the garden next to his home.

I love the stories my city has.
Aaron, this character should be considered.
