sometimes u go on google searching for a reference image and you just find something that is totally not what you are looking for but is better than anything u could have ever dreamed

who is she

the moment I saw this woman I was completely overcome with the feeling that she was, at that very moment, somehow divorcing me

Head canon: This is Charleston’s ex-wife’s final form. Like Charleston was her first trial-run divorce, and this is after she becomes a MASTER.

Vaudeville Shows, by Nathan & Zachary Johnson. 11 June, 2005

As we draw near to the release of The Brothers Bloom, I’ll post some related things that I think are interesting. This one is posted for Ronen, who is always egging me on to share incomplete songs.

So Vaudeville Shows is an unfinished tune that I wrote with Zach on ichat about 4 years ago when I was living in England. Rian had me reading The Big Con, and although this tune was still pre-Bloom, it felt exactly right to me for the movie. The main melody from this ended up morphing into the backbone of Stephen’s theme. At one point Rian was seriously considering putting THIS VERSION of the song in the credits. I like the cars driving by outside the window and the low growly vocal, but the ad-libbed filler lyrics, messed up guitar line and abrupt ending felt a bit too… incomplete to me.

Holy shit! A Bloom score supplement I haven't heard? The whole world is topsy-turvy! You can absolutely hear Stephen's theme in this. I am nerding out.

Haikara ("high-collar," ie western style) Hakuchi ("idiot").

The song was used in The Brothers Bloom, for the scene where Bang Bang (Rinko Kikuchi) gives her...demonstration, shall we say. I had to pull a few tricks to find this song online, since the album is out of print and the band hasn't put it up for download anywhere.

I actually have a near-complete version of the Brothers Bloom soundtrack, including all the songs that weren't part of the score and therefore not on the official soundtrack release. I kept meaning to post a list of them in order (the official album is slightly out of order), with download sources for a few of the trickier ones, but I never remember. Would anyone actually be interested in that?

Since 2009 I've had my Brothers Bloom ticket stubs on display, tucked into the frame of the poster hanging in my living room. I decided this week it's time to put them away, so I decided to scan them as well.

Most times I've seen any movie in a theater. Looper and Iron Man are tied for second at four viewings each.

A couple people have recently emailed me asking about the instrumental version of The Fabulist that plays during the scene on the Fidele in The Brothers Bloom. We decided not to include it in the official soundtrack album (maybe because of the jarring horn cutaway right in the middle that plays along as Stephen references something about thugs and Jakarta?), but I thought I’d post it here for those who are interested. Happy Friday!

I love this bit. I absolutely understand Nathan's reasons for not including it, but I was so disappointed by its absence when I first got the soundtrack.

Oh, and the horns were when Bloom mentions Stephen getting worked over by thugs in Jakarta, resulting in one of the best lines in the movie: "Have at me, you ham-headed bastards!"

THE BROTHERS BLOOM is one of my all time favorite films.

soon after its release, i became obsessed, going as far as writing director Rian Johnson an email professing my undying love, not only for the film, but for him, personally.

in exchange for my gushing, Johnson wrote me a very sweet email and enclosed 10 image scans from the moleskine notebook that belonged to Stephen (Ruffalo’s character), which had been actually filled by an artist prior to filming.

He explained that the notebook is one of his prized possessions. and, as silly as it seems, i treasure these beautiful images in the same way.

I have dreamed about the inside of that moleskine. I've known Rian for six years, and I've never even seen that bolero image.

Important note: No, not "an artist." Not just any artist. Zachary Johnson, Rian's cousin, and one of my favorite visual artists of all time.
