Elfroot and Arbor Blessing for Beatrix

Avatar

Thank you!!

Elfroot: What is a small, mundane thing that brings your character great comfort?

Joining the Sing-quisition was something that Beatrix wanted to do for some time before she actually stood with thirty other soldiers being conducted by Scout Harding. Like most people, her voice was fine for belting out Andraste’s Mabari in the tavern, but she always wanted to be able to sing by herself. She volunteers for inventory duty because she likes to sing alone in the storerooms; she hums while sharpening her sword. Before a battle, she recites verses of the Canticles of Transfigurations and Trials, but it’s the act of reciting it more than the words that bring her comfort.

ASK AND YE SHALL RECIEVE.

Family: Bonded at 18 to her clanmate, Mihren. From a very young age, they were the clan’s two best archers, in constant rivalry with one another that they only later realized was love. They tried for years to concieve, praying and making offerings to Sylaise over fire daily, but eventually Lynmyath was deemed barren. At fifty-one, she had given up hope for children of her own, instead focusing her efforts on the safety and fecundity of her clan. To assure this, she labored over one final offering for an entire year: an extravagantly woven tapestry of the threads and fibers Sylaise taught the people to spin from plants of the forest. Within one moon of its burning, she fell pregnant, giving birth to a healthy son, Tamralan (belongs to @saphyremelodies). One winter, after forty years together, Mihren died of a mundane illness. Tamralan was six. Lynmyath hasn’t been the same since.

Role in the clan: Hahren’aan, the most senior of the clan’s hahren. Whereas the Keeper is responsible for recovering and deciphering lost lore of the people, the hahren’aan is responsible for guiding the Keeper in matters of Dalish tradition and precedent, and overseeing the other hahren in the education of the clan’s da’len. The role goes to the member of the clan who has been with the clan the longest, who is usually also the eldest of the clan. Her re-tellings of the stories about the gods are always…notoriously colorful.

Conclave: Lynmyath, despite being fairly traditional, formed an unlikely friendship with Avira, a city elven orphan who was taken in by the clan. Most in the clan avoided Lynmyath because of her surly attitude, and most avoided Avira because of her heritage. Avira recognized Lynmyath’s difficulty walking as something her mother had treated in her clinic, so in the course of her trading, she took it upon herself to secure Lynmyath the medication she needed to regain a lot of her mobility. In exchange, Lynmyath defends Avira’s right to be part of the clan against the more prejudiced among the hahren. When Lynmyath goes to the Conclave, Avira accompanies her, serving as a guide savvy in the ways of the outside world. Lynmyath blames herself for the girl’s death.

Relationship with Solas: very tense, especially in the beginning and at the very end. His initial irreverence towards her people rubs her the wrong way, and she finds it absurd how he carries on like he is old at what couldn’t be more than forty years of age. Despite her demeanor, he grows to respect her for her determination and judge her by her actions, which are consistently both thoughtful and practical. As she grows more comfortable with him, she takes to mockery, calling him shan’uva (old egg) and being legitimately fascinated by his relationships with nature and spirits. By the end, they form what I would call a friendship, her knitting him things, him easing her arthritis. But all that is dashed during the Exalted Council. From the instant she finds out he is the Dread Wolf, she is deeply hurt, and doesn’t trust another word that comes out of his mouth, not even that he isn’t truly the villain of Dalish legend. She takes it to be just another lie from the trickster’s mouth, one she will not fall prey to. (Here’s some Trespasser banter between them).

The Shopkeeper [WIP]

At the outer periphery of Clan Lavellan, you will surely find Hahren Mithran’s tent- by far the largest in the Clan, a double-tent tall and white. The old craftsmaster has relatives in almost every Clan there is, all of them in some kind of trade. Hahren Mithran’s youngest son now runs the forges and is the next craftsmaster of ironbark, his elder sons have all married to other clans, leaving his very capable daughter, Malina, to run the shop.  Malina’s shop disappears every two years or so. That’s when she packs up and goes travelling, visiting as many Clans as she can to trade.

Fortunately for you, Malina is back, and you’ll find her sitting at the counter at the front of her shop, smoking elfroot, keen eyes watching you. And if you go closer, she’d smile her lopsided smile.

“How can I help you, ‘ma nehn?”

Notes: If you think she looks Indian, you would be absolutely right, Malina is desi! :D Because Asians represent, yo.
