5 Facts: Avira Lavellan
Tagged by the lovely @thereluctantinquisitor. <3 Thanks friend! Enjoy some Avi trivia:
- Has never stolen anything. No matter how poor or hungry she was, she was taught from a young age that it was both reckless and immoral to steal. Accusations of elven theft flew freely from the nobility whenever something went missing, so giving them any evidence that their suspicions were founded endangered everyone. Her father taught her to barter, and that she could get anything she needed if she was able to make a fair trade for it. It turned out to be preferable, as the only possessions that served as status symbols among the elves were those with an admirable story behind them: the hard work or the dedication or the cleverness it took to attain them.
- Enjoys exploring new places and figuring out how to blend in. It started with a fascination by how different life must feel if she were living in a different city with different ears or a different name. With astute enough observation, she realized she was able to ‘go with the flow’ of the people around her and that most did not recognize her as an outsider, let alone pay her any mind. Eventually, she started developing personas: who she was, what she did for work, places she frequented, carefully toeing the line of being familiar but not too familiar. She especially enjoyed big cities, as it gave her more chances to reinvent herself, experimenting with fame or infamy until she slipped out of notice altogether.
- Admires Grey Wardens. If it weren’t for the Grey Wardens’ actions in Amaranthine, Avira would have died in the Mother’s siege. She will never forget how it felt: all hope was lost and the darkspawn were about to overrun what few survivors remained, then a charge of blue and silver, fire gleaming off winged helmets and shields as they thrust themselves between the attackers and the elves. (Note, in an AU in which the HoF lets Amaranthine burn, she has a longstanding vendetta against the Wardens instead). The rift of trust between her and Solas started deepening when he insisted she not recruit the Wardens, but refused to tell her why she shouldn’t in any definitive terms.
- Wastefulness is her pet peeve. Nothing drives Avira crazier than people wasting perfectly good resources, or things being needlessly excessive. For instance, she is a very picky eater, but even if food is abundant, she refuses not to eat food that she’s given regardless of whether she likes it. She hates throwing away things that might be torn or stained but are otherwise in good shape, and tries to re-purpose anything she can or sell it rather than abandoning it. While she understands and takes advantage of the use of lavish attire to convey power, they leave a bad taste in her mouth. For instance, she can’t help but think how many people she could clothe for the cost of a silk nightgown, or be upset when there is clearly more food served at a banquet than would be needed to feed all those present.
- Hates being babied or talked down to. Part of the reason she frequently omits or lies about her age, she hates being treated like she is a child or unable to comprehend a given topic. It happens enough by virtue of her ears or heritage that she doesn’t want to add to it with her age. She takes great pains not to appear stupid in front of others, preferring to listen and observe and ask pointed questions until she can offer a more well-grounded opinion, and is embarrassed when others (especially those she does not fully trust) see her struggling with something, such as reading, as it makes her feel vulnerable to condescension.
