This theatre/temple was discovered in the year 2000 behind the small town of Pietravairano, in the heart of Campania, on top of Mount San Nicola in Italy. Dated at the end of the s. II early I B.C. It had a capacity of approximately 2000 spectators. Spectacular its location on top of the mountain at 409 m above sea level.

No one before Bernini had managed to make marble so carnal. In his nimble hands it would flatter and stream, quiver and sweat. His figures weep and shout, their torses twist and run, and arch themselves in spasms of intense sensation. He could, like an alchemist, change one material into another - marble into trees, leaves, hair, and, of course, flesh.        -   Simon Schama’s Power of Art. Bernini

history + alfonso d’este and lucrezia borgia

requested by noesapphic

Although Ercole reported happily to the Pope that Alfonso and Lucrezia  ‘gave each other pleasure’, that did not mean they loved each other. It was a marriage of state, eagerly entered into by the one, reluctantly by the other. Lucrezia was not attracted by Alfonso’s rough ways and manners and reserved character, but she had achieved her ambition and she was determined to make a sucess of her career as Duchess of Ferrara. — Sarah Bradford, Lucrezia Borgia: Life, Love and Death in Renaissance Italy

Baia or Bayas, located on the Campania coast, 20 km. of Naples, it was not a true city, but a set of luxurious villas, thermal facilities, a place of recreation and rest for the Roman elite. It seems that it was a center of dissolute life. Cicero called it “pusilla Roma” (Rome in miniature) since he considered it to be a place of vice and perdition. It was sunk into the sea due to the phenomenon called “bradyism”, which consists of the gradual rise and fall of the ground level caused by seismic and hydrothermal activity.

Gorgon (Medusa) decoration of a burial chamber called Ipogeo dei Cristallini (Hypogeum of Crystals) in Naples, Italy.

It was originally located outside the city walls of ancient Neapolis and served as a tomb between Hellenism and the Roman Empire. Today the place can be accessed through a staircase located inside the Palazzo di Donato, in Via dei Cristallini, from which the tombs take their name.
