Long live the King...
Author’s notes: SPOILER ALERT – SPOILERS FROM EPISODE 16 OF VIKINGS SEASON 5B!
I couldn’t avoid this. It was such a horrid scene that I just couldn’t avoid writing for him immediately. I never liked Aethelred, the girls are here to confirm, I don’t write for the Saxons very well and usually, I make them play the villains. Aethelred is usually the bad stupid boyfriend in my Modern Vikings AUs, or the Angry Saxon just like his father was, but man, I was growing to love this boy after the way he saved his brother at the battlefield. I was growing to understand this boy’s sadness since – in a friend’s words – “he’s the Sigurd from the Saxons”. And like Sigurd, he ended up too soon, in a horrid death that he didn’t deserve by the hands of a mother who neglected him until the last moment. So as Sigurd, he deserved a better end. So as Mads, Sigurd, Margrethe… He earned this better end in my hands.
Warnings: SPOILERS FROM EPISODE 16 OF VIKINGS SEASON 5B! Mentions of death, murder, treason and a horrid mother receiving a deserved payback.
Since you were a child and your mother were a servant in the castle where you were now working in her place, you saw him around his father, learning, playing with his brother even when his mother was so careful about precious Alfred.
It wasn’t the pearl in the eyes queen the jewel of that castle in your eyes.
Prince Aethelred was strong and fierce, even he was just learning how to be a warrior. But he was already shining in his armor like a knight to your attentive eyes, hidden behind the pilasters, watching his training.
When your mother died, you took her place at the castle on the same day of her burial. And you were sure God Almighty found a way to soothe the pain in your heart with his sweet words to the tears he noticed in your eyes when you first served his table.
“Don’t weep for the ones who are already with our Lord for they stopped suffering as we do.”
Anyone would have seen those words as harsh words. But not you. His eyes on yours, his attention, even for a single moment of your life, made you thankful and dried your tears for the rest of the day.
