🇵🇸 Palestine GFMs

While I don’t have a huge chunk of followers, I want to help boost the voices of those in need of aid in Gaza who have reached out.

I’ve included their names under the cut, in no particular order, as well as direct links to their stories.

This will be updated for every message I receive.

“And then there was Floyd Talbert. He had it all. We developed a personal friendship dating back to Toccoa. He was athletic and dedicated. You knew if your life were on line, he would come through.”  Major Richard Winters

“I was going deer hunting with an old sergeant of mine from Easy Company. That sergeant was Talbert. It wasn’t the hunt as much as I just enjoyed being around this guy. We didn’t have to talk to enjoy each other’s company, nor did we have to talk in combat or during battle. A word or two, or a wave of the hand, and we knew precisely what the other guy was thinking. That makes working just lovely. Of the enlisted soldiers of E Company, Talbert is the only one whom I would classify as a friend.”  Major Winters on his friendship with Floyd Talbert.

“The first thing I will try to explain… Dick, you are loved and will never be forgotten by any soldier that ever served under you or I should say with you because that is the way you led. You are to me the greatest soldier I could ever hope to meet. A man can get something from war that is impossible to acquire anyplace else. I always seemed to strengthen my self-confidence or something. I don’t know why I’m telling you this. You know all that.Well I will cut this off for now. You are the best friend I ever had and I only wish we could have been on a different basis. You were my ideal, and motor in combat. The little Major we both knew summed you up in two words, ‘the most brave and courageous soldier he ever knew.’ And I respected his judgement very much. He was a great soldier too, and I informed him you were the greatest. Well you know why I would follow you into hell. When I was with you I knew everything was absolutely under control. Dick this can go on and on. I have never discussed these things with anyone on this earth. The things we had are damn near sacred to me… Your devoted Soldier forever ” Sergeant Floyd Talbert in a letter to Major Richard Winters.

LEWIS NIXON III September 30, 1918 - January 11, 1995

Grace Nixon in a letter to Dick and Ethel Winters, December 1990

"That guy never complains about anything. Always cheerful—thinks more of others than himself. He is one some kind of man."

Eulogy for Lewis Nixon given by Dick Winters, 1995

"Whenever Grace would talk to me on the telephone, or write me a letter or a Christmas card, the message was always the same. "Lewis is so brave; he never complains, he always has a smile for me whenever I come into his room — and that just makes it all worthwhile." I am sure those words are familiar to all of you here today."

gif set inspired by this iconic set, only i've used the just unearthed photos from Dick Winter's Lewis Nixon file.

I like my name.

I like my name, but it's apparently rare in English speaking countries and no one knows how to pronounce it.

Also I can never find my name on those souvenir license plates/keyrings/shot glasses

I'm fine with my name, although it is the same as John Lennon's son.

Rare name that people always mispronounce, but I like it just fine

Negative connotations, plus it’s a much too fancy name for me. Also a popular TV show uses it so I hear it everywhere :/

i like my name partially because it's very common. i am tricky to search.

I used to hate it. But now I love it.

I like my name, but you can't have 10 people in a room without 2 of them being named Dave.

I'm OK with my name, just who I was named after is kind of odd is all

This is how well-fitted corsets look on large bodies! No one’s tits are getting crushed.

‘But, Pancake!’ you ask, ‘Aren’t stays supposed to squish the tits?’

No. That’s a myth, probably started by either the Victorians or Hollywood (or both, as these things go).

Stays have never been about squishing your tits to your chest. They provide support for your chest and back, and structure for your outer clothes. That’s it.

why have I never seen plus size corsets so stunning before

This is an oversimplification of the issue and also, not really reflective of reality.

  • Plus size corsets aren’t that much more expensive than smaller corsets, if at all. In fact, Redthreaded’s corsets are priced uniformly across sizes.
  • Neither this post nor the reblog were referring to the portrayal of corsets on screen. But hollywood maligns corsetry as a whole, regardless of body type and/or size. In regards to on-screen media you’re less likely to see plus-size corsets simply because shows and movies are less like to have plus-size actors who would be getting undressed. Nicola Coughlan’s Bridgerton stint was a notable exception for that reason
  • I follow an extremely skilled French corsetier who was commissioned to make something like a dozen corsets for a TV show. Her work was in no way cheap or poorly fitted, and the show itself did not have an unusually large budget. But all the actresses were thin, so of course there were no beautiful plus size corsets to be seen.
  • Bizarre corset construction in tv/film productions often comes down to unreasonable requests from the directors/producers. People in the industry have reported being told to bind corsets with mesh in order to make the actresses appear as slim as possible. Others have been asked to make a new pair of stays overnight. Costume shops can only make what they are ordered to make, and we should refrain from blaming their workmanship for a systemic issue in media.
  • In real life, plus size corsets and stays are quite common in the historical costuming community, but this is poorly reflected on social media for a multitude of reasons. Fatphobia is obviously at the top of the list.
  • content creators are expected to constantly churn out new things to keep audiences engaged. Corsets are a foundation piece so you really only need to own 1-2 per era that you want to dress for, and an in-between corset can get you double the usage ie an 1890s corset can also do 1880s and 1900s in a pinch. Posting about the same corset over and over will not keep audiences engaged.
  • In terms of surviving historical pieces, they do exist! But they’re not likely to be found in publicly accessible museum collections because institutions like the Met and the V&A are also biased towards pieces that reflect current beauty standards.
  • This post was originally about a jewelry label’s photoshoot in which a model had been put in a corset that was upsidedown and backwards. This fit about as well as you might expect. But this was not reflective of budget or the corset’s quality, which would be hard to judge from these pictures. Instead it’s reflective of the art director and stylist’s ignorance about corsets, disregard for the comfort of the model, and the hypersexualization of fat fems’ bodies.

If you want a concise answer, it’s that our modern society doesn’t view fat women as beautiful, so media that portrays them in a flattering light is rare. And media that does so and involves visible corsets is even harder to find.
