Met Gala 2015: Best and Worst Dressed
Monday night actors, actresses, models, fashion designers plus many more famous people, came together for the Met Gala. The Met Gala formally known as The Costume Institute Gala is a fundraising event to benefit the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s costume department. The event celebrates and kicks off the opening of a new costume exhibit. Vogue magazine’s editor in chief, Anna Wintour has been on the committee since 1995 and oversees the guest list. While people that weren’t invited can attend the event but only if they can spare 25,000 for a ticket. This year’s theme is “China: Through the Looking Glass.” While many attendees dress to match the year’s them, it is not required to attend. Below are some great, okay and horrible looks from this year’s Met Gala. My criteria when judging these looks was: did it honor the theme and not offend Chinese culture, was it flattering and most importantly was it different and exciting. Here are a few great looks and a few bad looks from the event.
The Bad
Sarah Jessica Parker
While I think Sarah’s dress is beautiful and I like the use of different textiles; its her headpiece that is offensive and for that reason she made my worst dressed list.
Anna Wintour
For someone who runs Vogue she doesn’t know how to dress herself. The sleeves are way to over powering for her small frame. The dress is shapeless and all the flowers make Wintour look like she’s lying in a field of poppies.
Grace Coddington
Yet another member of Vogue who can’t dress. While Coddington’s look is clearly Chinese, she’s essentially wearing pajamas which isn’t very glamourous.
Chloe Sevigny
While the fabric choice is very much inspired by classic Chinese textiles: the dress is ill-fitting and looks cheap. The use of different prints and patterns doesn’t work either.
The Okay
Taraji P. Henson
What I love about this dress is the fabric is reminiscent of Chinese pottery, which is an appropriate way to honor this year’s theme. But the style of the dress and accessories are boring.
Lizzy Caplan
I love the colors and embellishments on the dress. That being said, the dress doesn’t look tailored to Caplan’ body and it looks like someone forgot to iron the bottom of the dress.
Selena Gomez
What I like about Selena’s dress is that it’s modern but uses tassels and flowers from Chinese fashion. What I don’t like about the dress is the color; white makes the dress boring if the dress had been a deep ruby or emerald it would’ve been perfect.
Dianna Agron
What caught my attention about Dianna’s dress are the birds which look like they are from a painting; but the style of the dress is something that is seen time and time again on the red carpet. The Met Gala is an event where you can take chances. Had the birds not of made it onto Agron’s dress this would’ve been a look that would’ve flown under the radar (pun intended). Plus the color is boring and doesn’t do anything for her complexion.
Honorable Mentions
The Best
Fan Bingbing
This is by far my favorite look from this year’s Met Gala. The print honors Chinese art perfectly, and while her dress is gold and sequined it doesn’t over power that amazing jacket. Plus Bingbing’s makeup, hair and accessories complement the ensemble without taking away from it.
Gong Li
What I love about Li’s dress is that it’s a modern take on a classic Chinese silhouette. Plus the color and lace detail on the shoulder are beautiful.
Kate Mara
Kate Mara’s look is great because it’s inspired by flowers and art that has Chinese origins. The style of the dress and the use of ombre is what makes this look modern and fresh.
Bee Shaffer
Another great look from the Met Gala, was Bee Shaffer’s gorgeous ensemble. I love that again the pattern for the dress was inspired by Chinese art and flowers. The deep red looks lovely on Shaffer and makes the flowers pop.
The Friday Roundup
Here are three true stories and one false story from the past week. Can you figure out which one is the phony?
1. Taraji P. Henson who is the star of Fox’s hit drama Empire, will be hosting Saturday Night Live in April. This will be Henson's first time hosting and she will be joined by the band Mumford and Sons on April 11th. Other upcoming hosts include Michael Keaton on April 4th.
2. Well it looks like Zayn Malik who left One Direction this week isn’t wasting any time on a solo career. Malik has been seen leaving a recording studio in England. Malik told The Sun News that he wants to spend time relaxing, chilling and writing music. Malik announced last year that he was collaborating with producer and artist, Naughty Boy. No word yet on when Malik’s solo project will be released.
3. Roseanne Barr has announced she will be joining abc’s talk show The View. Barr announced Thursday that she will be joining the show in April and is excited to be back on TV.
4. Will Ferrell, has a received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame this week. The super successful actor is joining the brightest stars of Hollywood and said;
“It’s one of those very surreal moments where it’s a place that you’ve visited a lot growing up, especially growing up in Southern California, and looking at all the names but I don’t think you’d ever envision that one day you’ll be in that same company." Ferrell also joked that because his star is in front of the Hollywood Wax Museum, he’ll probably get a lifetime membership.
Did you figure out which story is fake? If you guessed Roseanne Barr joining The View then you are correct. Barr commented on the rumors that she is joining the show and said that her representatives have not been contacted about the comedian joining the talk show and has even said in the past that “she’s too tired to be on tv.” Check back next week for three more true stories and one story that is so false.
