Summary (Last Chapter)

“We’ve called in reinforcements in case it gets out of hand,” Alex tried to reassure him. “He’s not getting away this time. You can get him and go back, we’ll deal with the aftermath.”

And that was apparently the wrong thing to say because Matt’s expression once again turned towards anger rather than relief. “What?”

“You need to get the warlock, right?” Alex was unsure of where this conversation was going, but he couldn’t step back now. “We’ll catch him and you can take him back. You don’t have to stay for the demons too.”

“The same demons you just said you called reinforcements for?” Matt said, now starting to get angry again. “Are you kidding me? No, seriously. Why do you keep doing this?”

“Doing what?” Alex said, desperately wanting answers. Or maybe just one. Just a confirmation that he hadn’t done something unforgivable.

“You keep getting in the way!” Matt nearly shouted, catching Alex off guard.

Summary - Chapter 2

“I’m sorry, if I may interrupt,” Willie said, “I’m gonna need any kind of context. Literally anything. Did we fracture reality in some way after moving back and forth in different universes? Are aliens next?”

“Fract- what? No, this was a spell,” Matt said, once again trying to make this out to be an everyday occurrence. “I came to get a warlock. I’ll take him, go back to my present and you can pretend I was never here. Which was the original plan, but I think Max sent me to you instead of the warlock.”

“Time travel is possible,” Willie stated.

“It shouldn’t be!” Alex couldn’t help but say. “This is one of those things you are not supposed to do. You know, don’t use dark magic, don’t bring people back from the dead, don’t travel through time! Some things should be obvious.”

Summary

“Look, do I think you’re a psychopath here to murder us all? No,” Alex said, not really making the greatest start. “But we’ve had bad luck in the past and it always ended with someone hurt, so you can understand the suspicion. I know you don’t know us and you have no reason to trust us-”

“I screwed up,” Henry cut him off, his head snapping up to look at him. “Bad. Really bad actually. There was a mission and things went wrong and I-” he stopped, looking away again. “I screwed up.” He let out a shaky breath, glancing back at Alex. “I’m trying to fix my mistake. That’s not so bad, is it?”

Alex did not really expect this whole outburst. He had no idea if he’d actually said something right or if the kid just wanted to tell someone what was going on. What he’d told Alex last night made more sense now. “It’s not,” he said. “But going at it alone is not the best decision either.”

Summary (Last Chapter)

All he knew was that he was once again stumbling out and falling on the floor before he could steady himself. Something was wrong with these portals, they were unsteady. Reggie should be able to control them, shouldn’t he?

“It worked! It worked, right? Tux, dress, runes? They’re Shadowhunters!”

“Wrong tux, wrong dress and definitely not my parabatai. You?”

“No. But at least we’re pulling in Shadowhunters, right? That’s a step in the right direction?”

Alex blinked and found a lot of people staring down at him and Julie inquisitively. He didn’t enjoy being scrutinized. But he could also be grateful that they weren’t in the middle of the street this time and no one was trying to fight them.

Summary

What was maybe more concerning was that Alex was definitely not ready and by the way he was pacing he didn’t exactly seem eager to get ready either.

“Don’t tell me you got cold feet,” Luke said as Reggie closed the door behind them. Julie was leaning against the wall on the other side, also definitely not in the same dress he’d seen her before. Had they all abandoned the idea of a wedding?

“You didn’t tell him?” Julie pushed herself off, coming closer.

“I tried!” Reggie defended himself. “But I can guarantee you, Alex wants to get married,” he added to Luke.

“He doesn’t look ready.”

“Well, that’s not our Alex, so don’t worry about that,” Reggie said.

Summary

“Okay, Julie? Hey, look at me,” Willie said, successfully catching her attention. She still hadn't let go of his wrist and Willie didn’t try to pull away either. His voice was oddly soft considering what was going on. “We’re not alone here.”

Julie shook her head. “No.”

“Do you know who’s here?” he asked her.

No,” she said again, nearly desperate.

“But you don’t want us to find out,” he said.

“If we go upstairs,” she said, her voice steady, her stare piercing Willie, “we are going to die.”

Summary

“Alex, stop!” he heard a shout somewhere behind him. He stopped. But he was also determined. This ended today. “What the hell are you doing? You know this is wrong!” Alex turned around. “A mundane is dead,” he said. This also felt wrong. It felt weird. But it was necessary. “What about the fucking context, Alex?” Willie insisted, still looking a mix between furious and devastated. “The context? What context, Willie? It doesn’t change things!” Alex insisted. Willie stared back at him for a couple of seconds, his expression something close to disbelief. Alex was starting to feel like shit. But they were getting this over with tonight one way or the other. “You don’t really mean that,” he said. “Well, maybe you don’t know me as well as you think you do,” Alex spoke into the silence of the night. They weren’t even that far from the Institute. Alex was glad it was pretty deserted for the time being. He wouldn’t know how to explain this.

Summary (Last Chapter)

It probably wasn’t the best time they’d ever had, Alex still felt kind of miserable, navigating through some kind of fog and he really didn’t want to drag anyone else down with him, but Willie was perfect because he got it and he didn’t care and Alex loved him a bit too much. Just being there with him even when they weren’t really doing anything was good. And he was starting to feel better. Maybe everyone was right and taking some time off could do wonders for you. Who would have thought?

Not to mention he had his drums back. Still trying to wrap his head around the fact that his friends had broken into his childhood home to get them which should probably worry him, but it made him smile instead. He hadn’t realized how much he’d missed playing until he actually could again. Sure, they were a little crowded, but it wasn’t the end of the world and Alex felt… better. Everything was better. He could breathe again.

Summary

“Alex,” Willie stopped him, standing right in front of him. “What’s going on?”

Alex stared back at him, his eyes darting around for a second, but ending up to him again. “What do you mean?”

“I mean,” Willie said, taking one of Alex’s hands in his own, “that something’s been bothering you for a while now. And I’m not sure if something happened that no one knows about or if it’s just work and everything, but we can’t keep ignoring the issue. Us and you.”

Alex sighed, taking his hand back and wrapping his arms around himself. “I don’t want to do this?” he said, turning it more into a question like Willie would know the actual answer.

“And I would let it go if I thought that was true, but I don’t think it is,” Willie said.

Summary

He laid down on his bed, scrolling through his phone without really seeing anything. They were so close to getting what they wanted, he just needed the time to actually pass so they could get to it.

And then his phone started ringing.

“Hey,” he answered, his voice coming out a little tired, but ready to go nonetheless. “You finished earlier?”

“Hey, Alex, love of my life, hi,” Willie answered. It was enough for Alex to sit up, suddenly on alert. It wasn’t hard, he hadn’t really relaxed in many, many days now.

“What happened?” he asked.

Summary

"Because you’re still awake, running on what? Four, five hours of sleep? And I don’t hear any alarms,” Julie said.

“Maybe I’m just not tired,” he tried to defend himself, but it wasn’t even a good lie. Julie raised an eyebrow, clearly not believing him either. “Okay, maybe I’m just contemplating my existence, what about it?”

“You have the energy to do that?” she asked, genuinely curious.

“Sure, it’s kind of fun actually,” he said. “It gives you this sudden burst of energy to get you started and then eats up on whatever you have left.”

“That was weirdly poetic,” Julie said, “and also slightly concerning, did something happen?”

Summary

“Look,” Carrie's voice came through. “This is probably not what you want to hear, but with the lives you both lead, it’s not going to be okay for a while. Aren’t you two okay though?”

“I mean, yeah,” Alex said with a little shrug. “But I feel like you do need to see the other person a bit more in order to actually be okay.”

“So many people do long distance and they’re fine,” she said.

“Yes, but there is not a literal long distance between us,” Alex cut in.

“Yes, but if you see it as a long distance relationship then you get the fun surprise of actually seeing each other every so often,” she said, her lips twitching up.

Alex snorted. This is what his relationship has come to. “I don’t know…” he sighed. “I just miss when things were easier.”

Summary

“One week before we can see each other again?” Willie asked once more even though he was probably well aware the answer wouldn’t change. Or maybe he hoped that Alex had made a mistake. Alex also wished he’d made a mistake.

“Yeah, you get off from work at 10 pm and my shift starts at 8pm and then you’re already gone by the time I’m done and then it kind of keeps going like that for a couple of more days…”

“But I have a day off after that, don’t I?” Willie asked, starting to doubt himself too.

“Right, which coincides with me having a 24 hour shift which is followed by my day off during which you have that lecture and the study group and of course good ol’ regular work,” Alex said, following his very detailed schedule. “One more day of shifts overlapping, but then! I finish my shift at midnight which usually means 1 am and you don’t have to be at the hospital till 6 am which means you have to start getting ready at around 5, which also means we can do whatever we want from 1 to 5!” He tried to make it sound exciting. He was aware it wasn’t. It was depressing.

Or, Five times work cut Alex and WIllie's time together short, plus one time it worked in their favor
