One of my favorite things about wangxian (in all canons, though in kinda different ways) is that when WWX sees the slightest hint that LWJ likes something, he just runs with it and extrapolates to try and find other things he likes.

In this case, it goes “He likes real rabbits, so maybe he’ll like it if I draw a rabbit lantern for him. He liked my rabbit lantern, so maybe he’ll enjoy buying this other rabbit lantern.” This particular example is a pretty low bar to clear, sure, but the key here is why WWX does that. Look at how happy he is in both occasions when he finds that he is right about what LWJ likes! He’s grinning so hard you can see it even on the bottom left gif where you can’t even see his face!

The thing is that faced with LWJ’s unemotional jade statue personality, WWX doesn’t write him off as not worth the effort of making happy. Rather, he sees making him smile as a fun challenge. He delights in figuring him out because solving puzzles is something WWX enjoys in any context. Sure, there is the whole “I like him so I’m happy when he’s happy” aspect of it, but WWX is also very proud of himself for figuring LWJ out when no one else is able to - he does enjoy being the cleverest person in the room, after all. Every slight smile gets him I’m Doing Something No One Else Managed To Do points in his mind.

And idk, I just think it’s really sweet how WWX doesn’t see LWJ as “cold” but as “intriguing”

thinking about when wei wuxian takes jiang cheng up the mountain to baoshan sanren to get his golden core back and tells jc “I can’t go with you any further” and wei wuxian losing his golden core and wei wuxian being tossed into the burial mounds and having to learn “wicked tricks” so he can seek revenge and basically being forced to walk a different path a path away from his siblings away from lan wangji away from the world he knew and everyone hating him and jiang cheng separating him from the YungmengJiang sect and wei wuxian not being able to go to his shiji’s wedding and not being able to go on night hunts with lan wangji all because he wanted to protect his family and thinking about how wei wuxian says I can’t go with you any further and he has no idea how true that statement is
