the thing about the ofmd season finale killing izzy is that it's interesting and has a lot of potential as the midpoint to the story, but as the end of the story it fucking sucks.
the season 2 ending chickened out by presenting itself like it could be a full series finale when all it's done is set up a foundation of fucked-up for the next season to build itself on. but it presented itself like there would be no next season and that this was just the happy ending for the characters, while everything is still clearly in the fucked up mid-point emotionally to set up for season 3 but it's simultaneously saying "no it's not emotionally fucked up. it's all emotionally wrapped up into a happy little bow, you see?"
like, pick ONE, you can either make fucked up things happen, leave the character development in a tenuous mid point to set up for the third season OR you can wrap the characters up with a happy ending but you cannot actually do both. if it's meant to be the midpoint they needed to say "this is the midpoint of our story, the story is not over" with their WHOLE pussy.
whelp, the season 2 finale is now the series finale, and guess what? as an ending it fucking sucked. to writers: don't do this. cliffhangers will always make better endings than attempting to wrap up an unfinished show.

as much as the episode is fun, i do think calypso's birthday is the point at which the show irrevocably fucked up ed's character arc and by extension the rest of the show
the main issue is that they just completely dropped the thread of the crew being (rightfully) wary and distrustful of Ed. Ed and Izzy's interaction at the beginning of the episode is really the point where they unceremoniously snipped off the frayed edges where ed had hurt other people who still weren't doing okay and tried to turn it into focusing solely on Ed's own guilt and negative feelings.
Like, "turning the poison into positivity" in the context of the episode has nothing to do with the feelings of the crew, it is entirely about Ed getting over his own feelings of guilt by doing something nice in an entirely meaningless and unhelpful way. Ok, so he paid for a nice party! Where did he get that treasure again? Who did most of the work getting it?
The worst thing is they could have easily resolved that thread in a satisfying way during that episode. All they had to do was make it clear the crew still didn't trust him, have him try to win them over with the party, and have him realize during Izzy's song that they're still giving him the cold shoulder, still don't trust him.
Then Ned Lowe attacks, and instead of Stede talking down Hellcat Maggie, have Ed do it. Turn what was a very typical Stede moment into a moment of character growth for Ed where he proves to the crew, to Izzy, to Stede, and- hell- even to himself that he can be a good person, that he can care about the crew.
but instead he "turned the poison into positivity" by plying them with alcohol, which apparently worked, which tells me no one writing ofmd was ever underpaid and mistreated by a shitty boss who tried to pretend they were a great boss by throwing big parties.

it's taken me a while to come to grips with the season finale but, man, i can't believe ed died in izzy's arms after izzy begged ed not to go, said that he was izzy's only family, and ed told izzy that he was surrounded by family and they loved him and then in their mutual grief izzy and stede slept together. it was so beautiful and sad and im going to miss ed but it was really the only logical conclusion to the narrative the writers would have made ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
