More blog notes - we’re so excited to have reciprocal linking with the creator of @oldguardfinders , a really amazing project to help you search for and find fics that you forgot the location or title of!

Also: you can now navigate this blog by pairing! We have to do some cleanup of our tagsets to ensure we get all of them but you can now search for Joe/Nicky, Andy/Quynh, Andy/Nile, and Booker/Nile fics. An “other romantic” tag may be used in the future!

We also have tags for platonic pairings: a general tag “platonic” for any pairing for now, and a “found family” tag when that’s a focus of the fic. We hope these will help you find fic on our blog!

When we’re making a post we may use other names (Kaysanova) to help people find our recs in the tags, but for internal searching you can rely on these. Lastly, the pairing names are given alphabetically (so J before N, A before Q) just to keep things consistent from the mods end.

Happy fic reading, and please check out oldguardfinders! The blog is brand new as of Sept 17 2020!

Edit: most posts have now had pairing tags added; submissions from YWW and YFF will be reblogged (not edited) with a pairing tag to avoid messing up the username displayed as the submitter (which is a Tumblr glitch! Pesky!). New recs in the queue and subsequent recs should follow the pairing tag scheme :)

Update to Submission Guidelines

It’s Monday morning and the mods did some housekeeping!

You’ll find that we updated our Submission Guidelines to make them a little more specific and detailed, and we’re considering some updates to our desktop theme.

The full text of our submission guidelines are available at the linked page, but here’s some highlights:

  • Recommendations come directly from our mods… and from you!
  • Fics are read and recommended on an individual basis.
  • We’ll include fics from a variety of perspectives, writing styles, and genres
  • In general we’re multishippers - we will include various pairings.
  • The presence of a particular pairing, trope, or dark content does not automatically exclude a fic from being recommended; however, the mods have likes/dislikes, preferences, and hard limits or squicks of their own and these will be reflected in the works they each recommend.
  • That doesn’t mean every fic will be included. Criteria is an inexact science, but we’re going to do our best to keep in mind broader conversations going on that span across fandoms (not just the ones happening within this one).
  • We can’t guarantee that you’ll like every fic posted here, but we hope if you use this blog you’ll be able to find new fics and authors to love, or celebrate ones you already do!

As usual, we continue to welcome submissions from you! We’ll hold Your Work Wednesday (self-promo opportunity) on the first Wednesday of every month, and Your Fave Friday (your recommendations) will fall on the Friday 2 weeks after that.

Don’t have time to submit with the template but still want to contribute? When you create a bookmark on AO3 for a TOG fic you loved, use the bookmarker tag “togawesome”. Mods are periodically going to look for bookmarked fics on AO3 that used this tag! If we read it, and we love it, we may recommend it on the blog.

“It is not the same without Lykon,” she’d say, setting out her bedroll or snapping a man's neck.
Creator chose not to use archive warnings. Bisexual Andy, Canon-typical violence, pre-canon, implied/referenced character death, not canon with the graphic novel, they bone directly after this.

Andromaquynh | ~600 words | Teen and up

What I loved: Short, sweet, and with Andy and Quynh choosing each other in the aftermath of losing someone Andy loved. Standout line: “Twenty years is too long to mourn, even for Us.”

I love all of the takes expressed here about immortal biology! Dismemberment is discussed because Andy assumes that’s what Nile wants to talk to her about at first, which is darkly funny in its own right. I found all of these headcanons about immortal biology deeply plausible, and loved how the author explored them via conversation!

The only time Nile ever sleeps a full night and feels remotely part of herself is when she stays with Nicky and Joe, who shampoo brains out of each other’s hair in the shower and clean their guns on the couch watching Chopped reruns

Yusuf translates medical texts for Niccolò from Greek and Persian into Arabic, and Niccolò spots the substratum of the ideas of the classical authors that he had once believed the basis of his own civilisation that he would go to the sword to defend, translated and passed down and sewn into a no longer foreign script. There are words Yusuf does not know how to translate. They will never, ever know all of the words. The prospect is thrilling. --- It takes Niccolò lifetimes to learn Arabic.

What I loved: This one is stunning and lush with details, language, poetry, and time. This was one of the first fic I read from the fandom and it still holds up!
