When Copley first learns of the God Killer, a new drug promising euphoria and invincibility, he doesn’t think much about it. The Old Guard isn’t in the business of catching drug traffickers, after all. But when he learns that people who shouldn’t have started dying of old age, the job suddenly seems more up their alley than he originally thought. With only what Copley’s been able to glean from his files, the Old Guard embarks on a journey to track down the warehouse manufacturing the new drug and to find out who’s behind the sudden deaths. What follows is intrigue, mystery, and more introspection than is required before Andy’s morning drink. Can the Old Guard stop the production of the God Killer before it’s too late? And who will they be when they come out on the other side?

Author Recommendation: I had a lot of fun planning and writing this fic, most especially because the fic went in a direction I hadn’t intended when I first wrote the prologue. I am particularly proud of the characters and the plot and in the end, this fic turned out to be mostly “found family goes on a mission and there’s action and mystery and intrigue with a little bit of dark humor.” Which, if I’m being honest, is my new type of fic to write.

Quynh’s eyes snap up to meet a collision of phenomena so strong it nearly blinds her, brightly wild and loving for eternity and heartbreaking in its loveliness and endlessly forgiving and deathless inky black. The full force of it pulls her in, like gravity.
It is quê hương, the home of her heart, her soul.
More than anything, Quynh wants to reach out her fingers to trace the edges of Andromache’s face, but something raw and red and raging instead commands them to lie still, so there they sit, not touching, not breathing, barely even being. Call it cowardice. Call it the anxiety of being harmed. Call it heady memory that sticks in the now. Whatever it is, it seizes her whole against her will.
Quynh wishes she could do more, but that’s not in her nature right now.
(Or: Quynh and the intersection of her past and future)

Creator chose not to use archive warnings. Quynh-centric, character study, BAMF Quynh, PTSD, Flashbacks, she was under the ocean for centuries my dudes, her mind is fucked, Good!Quynh, angst with a happy ending, a bit of derogatory language, alcoholic Booker, Team as family, tons of Vietnamese language and culture, little bit of Latin for the boys, Love, Trauma, Tea, Acceptance

Quynh-centric, Andy/Quynh | ~15000 words | Mature

What I loved: This fic passes back and forth between Quynh's memories and the present moment (ie: reunited with the rest of the Guard and joining them on missions) - she's grounded by the actions of her loved ones (a tea ceremony, a coat, a trip to Vietnam, desire and love for Andy that she can’t quite express yet). They love her, and she's encircled by that care!

The imagery and sensory details are immersive and this fic doesn't skimp on the violence, so please heed the tags, but at the end of the day this fic is about rebuilding trust, Quynh starting a journey towards recovery, and a heck of a lot of tenderness - the ending caught my breath up and made me feel triumphant for her. This fic clearly has so much love and care and poetry put in, and it's a masterful character study for Quynh that’s complex in its treatment.

Slightly spoilery mod notes under the cut if you’d like additional details about the content:

The world is violent, time is long, and Andy is tired.

No archive warnings apply. Character study, light angst, pre-canon. Mod tag: plane crash referenced.

Gen, Andy-centric | ~1700 words | Teen and up

What I loved: Oof. It feels like there are so few fics that delve into Andy’s burnout. This one does so with grace, and a tinge of hope, and it’s entirely believable as a lead-in to what we see at the start of the film.

The stars are bright, cold and unreachable, hung high in the firmament.
They haven’t changed in all of her centuries gone. The names are different but the same figures look down on her, the gaze of the Ursa and the Swan’s tail, the Crane hidden under the horizon in these parts of the world.
She isn’t ready to see her homelands yet, but this is enough. This is good. The Steppe hasn’t changed either, the same grass covering the earth everywhere she looks, the sun burning her skin as the winds surround her. It all feels so familiar, the sights, the animals, the long days of travel. Andromache, sitting by her side, walking by her side, sleeping by her side. Andromache, Andy, Andreas, Hadriana, Anath and so many other names forgotten by time. And still, she’s here, with her.

After reuniting, Andy and Quynh leave the family to have a trip through the Great Steppe and reconnect. They might get more out of this travel than they expect.

No archive warnings apply. POV Quynh, Good!Quynh,  Hurt/Comfort, Andy regains immortality, happy ending, character study

Andy/Quynh | ~4450 words | Teen

What I loved: ohhhh the imagery of this one is so lovely - and the thought the author put into the names, the places, the motifs! This fic is calm, and lovely, and Andy regains her immortality. This, and their conversation, are lovely if you need something warm and comforting to sink into.

There is a woman cut in two by his window. Limned in moonlight, she is every bit as glorious and vicious as the others have recounted. Yet, Booker can see a fragility in her, a hesitancy - were they not cursed with immortality, she would not suffer herself to live. -- Quỳnh-centric piece: 100 word drabbles in the POV of each guard in relation to Quỳnh.

No archive warnings apply. Family, loss/grief, reflection, self-reflection, character study, drabble

Quynh-centric. | 600 words | Gen

What I loved: Succinct, gorgeous imagery and wording, lovely conclusion. I think this is a great exploration!

Quýnh is back from the dead, in a sense. She wakes most mornings with Andromache beside her, but they haven't been touching and they certainly haven't been talking.

No archive warnings apply. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder - PTSD, Healing, Guilt, Getting Back Together, Touch-Starved, Team as Family, Character Study

Andy/Quynh | 3400 words | Teen

What I loved: I so appreciated the direction that this author took a possible conversation between Andy and Quynh, addressing feelings of guilt! This fic scratched an itch I had for this pairing and it’s really lovely. The author is on Tumblr as @biblionerd07 and has written other fanfic for the Old Guard!

Helen lives, Andy doesn't die and Troy is just a burning city.
(Or, there are many names in history. Some of them are ours.)

Creator chose not to user archive warnings, character study, the Iliad

Andy/Helen of Troy | ~1300 words | Teen

What I loved: Gutwrenching, heartfelt, and poetic - this one got to me and it’s one I revisit now and then. I think it’s so creative.

Andy knew that Nile’s bright-eyed demeanor could never last—that eventually she would get tired of seeing history repeat itself, tired of fighting for the same damn things to change.
And yet Nile still proves her wrong after all these years.

No archive warnings apply. Future fic, character study, Nile appreciation, Andy POV, Nile was the missing piece, family dynamic, team as family

Andy & Nile, Andy/Quynh | ~1700 words | Teen

What I loved: It’s a piece with a lot of heart, Andy gets her immortality back, and although the fic ends on a melancholic note (the death of one of Nile’s family members), and the ending got me misty eyed. It’s very heartfelt!

Throughout her years, even before her first death, she’s made a habit of cataloging the exact distance she was from her hometown of Chicago. It was her little ritual, pulling up either her phone or a map, spanning the distance with her fingers. 6,987 miles, and then 4,130 miles, 3,879 miles, 5,148 miles, on and on and on. It hurt, but it was good too, seeing how lives kept moving, kept growing and changing. The world turned and Nile and her new family walked through it. Time like water. You’d think one could get used to physical distance. But nothing could have really prepared her for this.
A study of Nile through time. In which I compile my Nile week ficlets in an order that makes sense to me

Not Rated, Graphic Depictions of Violence, Major Character Death. Canon-typical violence, permanent major character death, temporary character death, trans Nile, trans everyone tbh, families of choice, character study.

Nile-Centric | ~1500 words so far, incomplete | Not Rated

What I loved: This fic has a lot of heart so far, and I got a bit choked up. Nile has an incredibly supportive family, which is what she deserves! And I feel like the author treated this subject with a lot of respect. It’s a very creative take.

The author is on Tumblr as @ssungods, has written other fic for the Old Guard, and created these chapters for Nile Freeman Week!

During her service, Nile had gone to bed every night thinking: God, please let me wake up tomorrow. She no longer worries about waking up, but it doesn’t make swallowing down her grief any easier.
Sometimes guilt and grief are not so different.
Or: In the month after Merrick, Nicky and Joe show Nile how to live.
No archive warnings apply. Post-canon, found family, character study, POV outsider.

Nile-centric | ~2600 words | Teen and up

What I loved: Another great vignette where, through her conversations with the other members of the team, Nile comes to a resting place with all the time stretching out before her.

This is a language no one else in the world is fluent in: the glint in Nicky’s eye, the unbearable gentleness with which he pushes Yusuf flat against the bed.

No archive warnings apply. Character study, relationship study, pre-canon, I don’t want to overuse the tenderness tag but this is very tender, implied sexual content, temporary character death.

Joe / Nicky | ~2600 words | Mature

What I loved: This one is so lyrical in the writing, it reminds me of poetry! So many different languages represented, too. I adore writing like this, and I feel very indulgent as I read it in all kinds of good ways. This fic is from Yusuf’s point of view, and his voice is captured really well.
