Joe officially meets Nicky when one of his infamous bludgers knocks Joe clean off his broom, breaking two ribs and making him blackout as he falls. He’s forty metres up.
A professional Quidditch AU with an auspicious beginning for a certain Beater and Seeker, a muggle-born Chaser finding her feet with(out) the dubious mentorship of a very tired Keeper, and an Italy versus France rivalry that apparently transcends even magic and every single sport.

While I have so many issues with Rowling as a whole, I do have a large fondness for the universe and I love seeing what others do with select parts of it. This is such a great example of that - it takes the world of Quidditch and puts such a great twist on it. It feels like reading a soccer AU AND a Quidditch AU and I LOVE THAT. Setting aside, the care and joy that is written into this fic has stuck with me since I first read it a few months back. I love the way that they care about each other and how it develops from there. It’s such a great sports AU with The Old Guard as the main cast and I’ve recently reread it and had such a great time doing so. There’s three other fics in the series that are also SUPER enjoyable! The author has written other fics for The Old Guard and can be found on AO3 as shown above - I couldn’t find any mention of them being on Tumblr, so if you know them, please let them know they’ve been recced!

This fic evokes the feeling of riding a horse for the first time (and given that it’s been years since I was last on a horse with supervision, I was feeling it). Plus, Nile gets back on the horse when she falls off! I dunno, feels like a great metaphor for her learning to be immortal.

What I loved: Oh this one feels like poetry to read, and captures so much of physicality and spark between them that felt so evident to me in the movie. The imagery is so sharp at the edges and crisp; you get lines like Nile kisses back like her name, a force of nature, one letter away from victory, and I scream! If you’re into the Andy/Nile dynamic I feel like this one won’t disappoint.

What I loved: Oof. It feels like there are so few fics that delve into Andy’s burnout. This one does so with grace, and a tinge of hope, and it’s entirely believable as a lead-in to what we see at the start of the film.

Lost and found out there among the paths by TuskFM

The stars are bright, cold and unreachable, hung high in the firmament.
They haven’t changed in all of her centuries gone. The names are different but the same figures look down on her, the gaze of the Ursa and the Swan’s tail, the Crane hidden under the horizon in these parts of the world.
She isn’t ready to see her homelands yet, but this is enough. This is good. The Steppe hasn’t changed either, the same grass covering the earth everywhere she looks, the sun burning her skin as the winds surround her. It all feels so familiar, the sights, the animals, the long days of travel. Andromache, sitting by her side, walking by her side, sleeping by her side. Andromache, Andy, Andreas, Hadriana, Anath and so many other names forgotten by time. And still, she’s here, with her.

After reuniting, Andy and Quynh leave the family to have a trip through the Great Steppe and reconnect. They might get more out of this travel than they expect.

What I loved: ohhhh the imagery of this one is so lovely - and the thought the author put into the names, the places, the motifs! This fic is calm, and lovely, and Andy regains her immortality. This, and their conversation, are lovely if you need something warm and comforting to sink into.

After a mission, Nile brings Nicky home to his family.

Nicky’s taken her phone again, booking it down the terminal while speaking in soft, rapid Arabic. Nile trails after him, and idly notes the blood stain on the neck of the guitar case Nicky has slung over his back. Nicky’s arm must not have been fully healed when he zipped it shut. She hopes her own case (smaller, for a banjo, though it doesn’t hold a banjo the same way Nicky’s doesn’t hold a guitar) is blood-free.

They come through the doors into the main entry, stop, and Nile is halfway through a survey of the crowd when a small figure in overalls goes streaking toward them.

“Papa!”

Immortality, angst and fluff, kid fic, post-canon

What I loved: On the surface, this is a sweet fic about a kid who loves her family and is meeting Nile. As you read more and more, it becomes slightly horrifying (if only because of the implications of it all) and sad. This is a perfect mix of melancholy feelings and I think about this fic A LOT.

 The “Partners Weekend” at Merrick Industries was a bit of a joke, and in more ways than one. Who actually had time to spend a long couples weekend with people you worked with? But Joe had slaved away too many hours at his desk to blow off his chance at a promotion just like that. Particularly when all he had to actually do for it was spend a weekend in some manor house in the English countryside with his colleagues.

 Which led him to his current predicament: Who of his friends would agree to pose as his spouse for four days – and at one week’s notice?

Double fake-dating AU: Joe asks Quynh to pretend to be his wife for an important work social at Merrick Industries. Andy brings her good friend Nicky under a similar guise. Only of course none of them is actually straight, and of course none of them is willing to admit that.

A dumbasses-to-lovers story.

Alternate Universe - Modern Setting, Alternate Universe - No Powers, Co-workers, Alternate Universe - Office, Office Party, Fake/Pretend Relationship, Secret Relationship, Secret Crush, basically something straight out of an early noughties British rom-com, only with nothing straight about it of course Joe/Nicky, Andy/Quynh | 81,601 words | Explicit What I Loved: Fake dating is one of those things that’s hit or miss for me and this one hits it dead on. I love this fic so much, it’s so perfectly wonderful. The miscommunication here isn’t so much that it feels disingenuous but it’s so much fun - it’s fun even when it’s frustrating. I was taken in by “dumbasses-to-lovers” and I never stopped adoring it. It’s a heist fic, of sorts, it’s a modern AU, there’s flirting, it’s got everything. The hilarity of the situations that each couple find themselves in is an actual delight. There’s a care here that renders these characters so very true and real to what you read - they feel like people I’d be friends with. This fic is fun and I savored it over multiple days as a treat to myself for hitting my word goals with my Big Bang. Nicky and Joe immediately claimed the back and crashed out, limbs entangled with each other’s, and Joe’s nose pressed against Nicky’s hair. Nile tried to subtly watch them in the rear view mirror, and tried very hard not to think about a millennia of relationships.

I love Nile dealing with some complicated feelings, the relief she gets from noticing Andy and Joe and Nicky, starting to approach big questions about her immortality. This work was written early in the fandom and I still love it.
