…The dangers of online communication consists of the illogical acceptance that worthwhile human connections can, in the digital age, be condensed into the simple reception (receival) of  typed words or sentences. The truth of the matter is, real connection is all too often  felt rather than spoken.   The simple  physical presence of the other does matter.  Handwriting is important because it…

Also remember that “said” is invisible on the page, and that you aren’t ever overusing “said”, even if you’re scared you are.

You could write a novel using nothing but “said” to indicate that people are speaking and nobody will ever notice, complain, or think you’re a lazy writer.

A photograph of this Gymnasium student shows Kafka standing, a little embarrassed, leaning against overgrown balcony railings, in a high-buttoned adult suit with waistcoat, high collar and tie, his arms extended to both sides, his slender hands intertwined with the ivy. He has a powerful nose, a small, firmly closed mouth, dark hair coming from low on his forehead, grey eyes dreamily and doubtingly directed at the observer.
A ‘callow creature’ was what he was at the time, as he notes in his diary in 1916. He could expect no guidance from either his parents or his teachers.

— Saul Bellow, Conversations
