A cast of a juvenile Compsognathus from the Solnhofen Limestone in Germany, one of the smallest dinosaurs ever found. This specimen is not much bigger than your standard spiral-bound journal, and would have been about the size of a young chicken when alive. In gut area, you can see the remains of its last meal, a sphenodont reptile, a distant ancestor of todays tuatara. The deep chevron in the tail of the animal indicate that the Compy was a pretty good swimmer. Despite feather impressions of other animals in the Solnhofen, such as the famous Archaeopteryx, as well as feather impressions on other compsognathids such as Sinosauropteryx, Compsognathus does not seem to have had feathers. #dinosaur #fossil #compsognathus #archaeopteryx #tuatara #solnhofen #germany
