Jacob Ruppert’s mansion at 1116 Fifth Avenue once stood as to the grand aspirations of New York’s elite. Born in 1842, Ruppert came from modest beginnings as one of seven children to Franz Ruppert, a German immigrant who arrived in America in 1836. Franz initially worked as a grocer before founding New York’s first malt brewery on 13th Street and Avenue C, setting the stage for the family’s future in brewing. Jacob Jr. would go on to expand this business significantly, ultimately becoming a powerful figure in New York’s brewing industry and, later, in sports as the owner of the New York Yankees.
Constructed in the 1880s, Ruppert’s mansion reflected his success and the high standards of his time. The home’s exterior showcased the Renaissance Revival style popular among the wealthy, featuring meticulously crafted stonework and grand architectural details. Inside, renowned designer Herter Brothers completed much of the interior, bringing luxury and sophistication to each room with ornate woodwork, detailed furnishings, and impressive artworks. Ruppert spared no expense on the property, investing $90,000 in its construction.
