"I learned from my enemies. Beat them at their own game!"
"You have become them!"
imagine literally saving the galaxy and ensuring that life will continue to thrive within it
and then you get home and your little brother bullies you lmaooooo
"No. I'm not like you."
Calling Usagi Tsukino/Sailor Moon a Mary Sue is still wild to me.
It will always be wild to me.
This girl is a clumsy ,lazy crybaby who don't want to fight in the beginning of the series and end up becoming the one who saves everyone asses every single time and willing to lay down her life to protect the people she loves.
She had to LEARN how to fight.
She had to Learn how use the Silver Crystal properly.
She didn't all of a sudden knew how to fight and use the Silver Crystal.
She is nowhere near perfect at all.
I love Princess Serenity but her 90's version is more closer to a Mary Sue than Usagi.
Not PS Manga/ Crystal versions where we do see her personality and see the similarities between her and Usagi.
And her PGSM version. Child! They wasn't playing with that version of her.
Her 90's version just seem perfect with her knowing how ice skate ,pick flowers and the only thing she ever did was to jump off that balcony to join Endymion and got killed. That was the only wreckless and rebellious thing she did really. Because really didn't emphasize the fact that she supposed to sneaked down to earth a couple times like her manga/ Crystal counterpart. We had a bunch of episodes in the 90's anime trying to prove that Usagi was not a mature or elgant as Serenity when it was revealed that she was Serenity.
You don't have to connect with Usagi because when I was younger I didn't but now I do as I gotten older and watch different versions of her.
But to call her a mary sue??
Did we watch and read the same series??
While I get your points on 90s anime Serenity, I will still take her any day over the PGSM version. I'm sorry, but that was just a masterclass in dumbfounding Adaptational Villainy.
But on the point of Usagi, I can see why some might find her a Mary Sue at first glance: she is the closest to Naoko Takeuchi by her own admission, and the amount of power-ups she receives is staggering. However, actually paying attention to her arc negates the claim. Not only does she have character flaws she must grapple with and move beyond, but her power-ups all tend to come at a price: using the full power of the Silver Crystal almost killed her, becoming Super Sailor Moon aka the Messiah ended up also nearly killing her because that Christ-like title came along with the requisite sacrifice, becoming Eternal Sailor Moon aka Neo-Queen Serenity would inadvertently give rise to the threat of Death Phantom and the Black Moon Clan plus create a distance between her and her child, and becoming the avatar of a literal goddess as Sailor Cosmos took her into a seemingly endless conflict with Sailor Chaos that actually caused her to give into despair and lose all her faith. All of that increasing power hurts her as much as it helps her; the opposite of what happens with a Mary Sue.

D'aaaaaaaaaw @ that last picture! <3
[1] Also, like... Usagi's wish at the end of Classic was to go back to normal life. Yes, her manga self tried to kill herself out of despair after having to personally kill Mamoru, but AFTER that she embraces her powers with Mamoru's encouragement and accepts being a senshi by defeating Metalia and restoring the planet. While her anime self after the battle basically goes "nope, bye!" and doesn't care if more enemies could come later. And is upset when Luna makes her Sailor Moon again.
[2] And she even still rejects being Sailor Moon subconsciously in R, causing her tiara to stop working. Whereas manga Usagi actually GETS OVER her issues with being a senshi following her failed suicide, and accepts the responsibility that comes with this, but people tend to ignore that part. Even though this happens WITHIN THE SAME ARC, unlike in the anime where she is still in the "I just want to be normal" mode afterwards. But of course the anime is the version with character development...
[3] Interestingly, Usagi's anime self is VERY insistent on getting Mamoru to remember her in R so they can be together again (even though in that version they're still not as close as they were in the manga, which is another thing to keep in mind). Apparently the dude isn't allowed to have a normal life because his soon-to-be-girlfriend - who just a few months ago essentially wished her own powers and memories to be gone - said so. Gotta have the Miracle Romance.
90′s Anime Usagi: Wishes to be a normal girl and gives up the mantle of being Sailor Moon which take her and everyone else Memories away. Which Luna have to give her memories back because everyone was in danger and she cries saying “ good bye normal life”
And you know what’s sad about the Usagi in the 90s anime?
Her feelings about Wanting to be a Normal Girl are entirely VALID.
I don’t think she Intentionally made the wish at the End of the first arc on purpose. After all, she is dying. Her friends and the person she really liked are already dead. There’s no choice in the matter.
I also think she didn’t expect the crystal to respond to that. Because unlike the Manga!verse, I don’t think it’s necessarily explained *to* Usagi that the Silver Crystal followed her heart until Later. (Or at least demonstrated). (correct me if I’m wrong here!)
So, no only is she completely unprepared in the 90s anime for that power, she doesn’t actually know what that power does or how it operates completely.
So, we roll into Season 2, of course at the beginning of it, she’s Lamenting about having to be Sailor Moon again. That’s actually quite reasonable given she’s -still - 14 (And Stays 14 for a while then turns 15 off screen or during Super. Because there’s a weirdness in aging here but I DIGRESS).
She’s just had all the memories of two deaths, several attacks. Watching her friends die. (but along with that, Memories of finding/meeting others and ect)
So, yeah, I can see why she’s like that.
Then.. the 90s anime does nothing With It. It devolves back into her being selfish (which, fine, 14-15yr olds are this.) but it just keeps going is the real problem. This is where Usagi’s character eventually stops developing at all.
(I’ve always thought it stopped legit just before the third season started. She receives zero development until Stars and even then it’s minor.)
Usagi is supposedly a sweet person and all, but she for real did not want the other girls to live a normal life. She weirds Mamoru out the entire time trying to get him to remember because apparently, she can’t flirt normally or even remotely think “Hey, why don’t I just hang out and get to know him?”
No.
She wants to speedrun it because it’s Easier.
Even though I love the second season for the MamoUsa development, that part of it always annoyed me a lot more than the ‘Break up Arc’. Because I can understand the break up arc (however sloppily done). I can Get behind the idea of Mamoru trying to protect her, thus not putting her in harms way because he does want to be with her.
But contrast that with Usagi.
Usagi spends a lot of time trying to get him to remember her before she gives up. (Interesting how LUNA and ARTEMIS couldn’t get his memories back. Even though they got everyone else’s. You’d think she’d ask them to do that.)
And even after Usagi gives up, she still doesn’t let him live his life and let ‘fate/destiny’ whatever get them together naturally. (Like in the first season. they just happen to keep meeting.) Regardless of the danger she, herself, might present to him.
And even during the Break up arc, when he DOES tell her the truth- she legit Does Not Care If She Dies. (Hi, his number one Fear)
She basically has learned nothing.
Nothing whatsoever.
She doesn’t Soothe the Idea that she could DIE being with him. She just tells him she doesn’t care if she does, she wants to be with him. (I know, I know, Romanace Trope but still.) Like, that’s not pleading your case well, Usagi.
VS
Manga!Usagi when Mamoru pulls this of “We shouldn’t be around each other” During the Dream Arc. Usagi somewhat complies with his wishes but in the end, they still get together and they TALK (Hi communication!) about this and find out the reason for it via helios.
Manga!Usagi didn’t Push herself on Mamoru. She acted like a caring girlfriend until his request that maybe she shouldn’t visit as much anymore/stop visiting him. So, she has to be a little sneaky and sends Chibiusa in because she knows Chibiusa will tell her if anything was majorly wrong.
Manga!Usagi respected Mamoru’s request. Even if it hurt, she understands at least that he’s very ill and likely doesn’t want to spread it to her.
She doesn’t do what her 90s!Anime counterpart does and just barge in on whatever he’s doing because he’s next to someone female looking.
In fact, she never does this. (Subplot point in the Manga/Crystal)
yet somehow, Crystal!/Manga! Usagi is somehow worse????
--getting back to the main Point of lack of Development:
Manga/Crystal!Usagi accepts her destiny much quicker. Even going out and acknowledging it in her own dialogue in Infinity arc. She knows there’s always going to be evil. She’s aware that she might be the reason it comes (maybe not fully but she knows it could be a thing.).
And she’s fully prepared to fight for that.
Meanwhile, 90s!Usagi doesn’t even think along these lines. Her longing to be a normal girl is reasonable but at the same time, is the third season of the show and she’s STILL banging on about it.
It’s the Fifth Season and She’s STILL going on about it.
No point does she ever just accepts that this is her life now. And the Narration never makes her come to this realization.
In fact, I’d argue that they backpedal a lot on her characterization and ability to even fight.
She barely fights in the last three seasons. She doesn’t do much other than her finishing move and the goofy hijacks.
Compared to the first two seasons, she was more of a physical fighter (both because of necessity but also she.. you know, Actually FOUGHT)
but by Season Three or Four, she doesn’t really do much. And she starts shrinking back from that and literally giving her enemies what they deserve.
Which is who we end up with that really piss poor fight against Galaxia in Stars.
Even as Sailor Moon/Princess Serenity form, she continually RUNS AWAY.
She continually goes on about how much she doesn’t want to fight.
This woman, Galaxia, killed her lover, Killed the future she dreamed of, Killed her FRIENDS IN FRONT OF HER. TOLD HER ABOUT HOW SHE KILLED HER BOYFRIEND
and...
She.. still, when given a sword, just doesn’t fight. Not seriously.
She also Never Admits why she really is fighting. She continually goes “ I fight for Love and Justice!”
and runs away from it.
While her Manga!Counterpart?
THAT Usagi tried to be nice at first but the moment her advisors/friends were killed, it was Over. She dusted everyone that hurt those she cared about. She’d given them One (1) Chance and they blew it.
She fought to save her friends and Mamoru’s literal manifestations of their Souls from Galaxia. She admitted outloud that she wasn’t Fighting for Love or Justice, she was fighting for her friends and family. (which is Real things and not concepts.)
Manga!Usagi has grown up over the course of her books. She showed that she understood that Darkness was always going to be a thing in every Sailor Soldiers’ life. It’s a cycle. She got that. She didn’t Destroy Chaos. Because you Can’t Destroy something that’s a Part of you.
(She technically granted Chaos a Reset with the help of the other Sailor Crystals.)
Like... That’s Development.
IDK what 90s! Usagi was on.
That girl was STILL insecure at the end of the freaking Show!
She still felt needy and wanted Mamoru to affirm his love for her. (Like him dying every other season and putting himself in harms way to save her wasn’t enough.)
and that’s just.. like.. Girl, he literally put a RING on your FINGER with the promise of Marriage in the future. Like...??? How much concrete affirmation short of the horizontal tango did you want?
Exactly. Usagi in the 90s anime had a consistent character development across the original series and R....and that was it. Across S, SuperS and Stars, she just keeps on regressing, and worse still is that the regressions aren't actually addressed as a problem or something she needs to work on improving. They just happen, and we have every reason to believe they will continue to happen after the Stars series finale. The whole point in the manga once Neo-Queen Serenity is introduced is to showcase how Usagi develops into this wiser, more mature person capable of ruling the planet, and with an added twist later of her subsequent negative character development into Sailor Cosmos that present day Usagi has to help her back from. She felt like she had a full series-wide arc, and she doesn't in the 90s anime.
The consistency of Usagi going straight to Minako when reunited with her friends or looking for comfort even with the other senshi around her.
Doing some character studies with Sailor Moon since it's been a while since I've drawn frequently.
Good ol’ Bunhead!
He didn't see that coming 😂
