“The funny thing was that I don’t think there was a gender-specific conversation about who should be doing what. It sort of organically came out, and I don’t think Lionel (Wigram, co-writer) and I realized that they were strong female characters until we finished the film. We just saw them as characters, and the fact that they were female was sort of secondary to us. The film plays slightly stronger to women than it does to men, which we never anticipated.”
