So in TDORS 4 we get some clues about River’s trial for murdering the Doctor, in which it leads us to believe that River’s defense was that she only did it because she was “defending the universe.” Now, up until this moment, I had previously headcanoned that River took her punishment without batting an eye, that she pleaded guilty with a sassy little smirk because she had a story to sell and a whole universe to convince that the Doctor was really dead.

But after hearing this… it’s opened up a whole new concept for me, because if River is talking about defending the universe, she’s talking about why she did what she did. She’s telling the court room that she didn’t have a choice. She’s probably even trying to throw the Church under the bus for what they did.

Imagine River Song getting philosophical about choice, because when you’re tangled up in fixed events, does free will even exist? Has she ever had a choice about anything in her life? No, probably not. Her whole life she’s been a means to an end, a tool used by others, and is it fair, to punish a hammer for striking down a nail?

And just, imagine that, River ‘I’ve never been afraid to show how much I love the Doctor’ Song, wrists clapped in irons and teary eyed, waxing poetic about how she chose the universe over the love of her life. Because yes, she killed the Doctor, but only because the alternative was unthinkable, because not pulling the trigger wasn’t an option at all, because she took a stand against fate once already and the cost was too high a price. Imagine River defending herself, declaring to a room full of people who hate her that she pulled the trigger in defense, not just for herself, but for every living thing in the universe.
