Would you like some tea with your sugar, Doctor?

Invasion of the Dinosaurs - season 11 - 1974

Death in Heaven - series 08 - 2014

The Doctor is some kind of space hummingbird

“I see some things never change…”

No wonder Four and Thirteen ended up being so hyper.

Someone asks Three and Twelve if that much sugar is really necessary. “Eh, that’s a problem for future me.”

The last scene in the café between the Doctor and Clara has them both lying for the best of reasons - they deceive each other that they have finally found what they want in order to sell the lie that they are happy. Not so much everybody lives as everybody is dying inside. The Doctor learns to hug, but not because he’s become touchy-feely, but because it is ‘just a way to hide your face’. At the end of the season, our central duo can touch each other physically, but emotionally they’ve never been further apart.

“My lovely space idiot talk too much” face.

I love this acting parallel so much. The Master has always looked at the Doctor like this. Always.

I know Michelle has spoken about how it is almost always been a class thing between the Master and the Doctor. Everything was great while they were friends, but then the Doctor had to abandon his privilege. Here, the Master is expressing pity. The chin turned down kind of affectionate pity. The one you feel for a little puppy struggling to climb up the stairs because you just know that won’t stay small forever. They aren’t being mean, they just believe the Doctor is delusional. The Doctor will realize his big mistake some day.

I just love how Michelle & John know instinctively how to emote that. The Doctor, filled with passion, tries to rouse compassion in the Master’s heart. Only for his words to fall on dead ears.

Other notes on the acting:
Observe Michelle moving her lips. It’s a microexpression. Michelle is a master of microexpression. As she listens to the Doctor, her slightly parted lips express that she thinks the Doctor has realized he’s wrong. Only in the next moment, her lips purse because she realizes he hasn’t accepted that he is in the wrong.
As for John, it’s in the eyes, yes? The slight widening of his semi-squinted left eye as his pupils dart across the Doctor’s face. A half smile across his face. He’s trying to not to listen. He’s trying not to feel the pain in his enemy’s voice. En pointe, John. En pointe.
