For you. For all of us.

I don't care what anyone says, that S2 Loki finale indisputably proved that Loki (and by obvious extension Tom Hiddleston, as the only possible actor to play him so perfectly) is/was/and always will be THE best part of the entire MCU.

When I tell you I was sobbing by the end. The sheer selflessness, pathos, but also raw beauty of that moment... and the shaping of Yggdrasil. I'm still reeling. Pure art.

I genuinely think i'm finally at peace with how his story ends.

I've been stewing over those Olivier award nominations for a couple of hours. I was wondering if I was being too blinkered about Tom's performance, about the revival as a whole. And, about Charlie and Zawe's performances.

After all, you know how it is when it's your fave, right? You can become a wee bit blinkered in your perception of their work. Did I love it so much just because Tom was in it?

So I went back and re-read the reviews from March and April last year. Not the ones written by Hiddlestoners (no offense people!) But the reviews from theatre critics and theatre going regulars with no vested interest in Tom, or Charlie, or Zawe, on Twitter.

The reviews were universally great.

So, I genuinely think Betrayal probably suffered from being out of the voters consciousness (being so early in the voting year and followed by 'showier' performances - no hate for those nominated btw, i'm just noting that Robert is a VERY restrained character) and NOT because it wasn't worthy of a nomination. There's also the fact that Cyrano (also directed by Jamie Lloyd) literally just finished at the end of February. Uncle Vanya is still playing... (plus they've all been available to see on NTLive, unlike Betrayal-through no fault of the cast or production team).

So, it doesn't make me any less salty. But I know I got to watch something really special on that stage, and that's good enough for me.

Because i’ve had several anons asking about this since last night...

I’m going to address it in one place, one time and then that’s it. Let me be clear. I don’t ‘do’ fandom drama, gossip of any description. Nor am I a psycho-analyst, and I don’t know Tom Hiddleston personally (more’s the pity). 😉

I have never seen Tom ‘in real life’ before. I have seen many, many, many… (you get the idea) interviews and footage of the man on the red carpet and in interviews. I was lucky enough (as I said here) to be able to watch the man live, in action for several minutes (probably somewhere between 5-10 in total - forgive my Tom-addled brain and lack of stopwatch) as he interacted with fans, and being just as - actually, no. MUCH MORE - accommodating than any other person, actor or otherwise, on that red carpet. (That isn’t a slight on the others by the way, it is just the way it happened to play out yesterday).

Tom was clearly friendly, seemed in good spirits, and appeared to go out of his way to help the fans get the best picture possibly. He is also the only person I saw who took phones from fans in order to position himself and them in an ideal spot, often contorting himself into frankly uncomfortable looking positions to do so! And he chatted with people. And when he was called away he apologised for not getting to us. And perhaps more importantly, looked like he genuinely meant it. Other stars didn’t even come up to our end of the carpet (again, not a slight, i’ve been to enough premieres to know that can happen). It is what it is.

I saw nothing yesterday to suggest that Tom has ‘lost his spark’, ‘was unhappy to be there’, ‘had sad eyes’, ‘was only pretending to smile’ blah blah blah… Was he jumping around like an eager puppy? No. Nor would I have expected him to.  He’s got many years under his belt on the red carpet now. Perhaps he doesn’t feel the need to do that any longer? Though it was a child friendly movie, there wasn’t an abundance of children in the crowd. Regardless, it didn’t make Tom appear disingenuous to me. Rather just perhaps a little more mature. Which - shock horror - he is!

But here’s the thing. We don’t know what’s going on inside Tom’s mind, and it’s not our bloody business! I’m certainly not going to get into some amateur psycho-analysis bulls**t about it with people on Tumblr!

All I personally saw was an actor engaging with his fans happily and professionally. And it was bloody glorious. Why isn’t that enough for some people?

Most acting awards/nominations have actually nothing to do with talent, but with power and money and studios and contracts and whatnot. This is, for instance, why there are still diversity issues in Hollywood, especially when awards night comes around.

So I wouldn’t take Tom not being nommed all the time with a grain of salt. We know he’s good. Other people know he’s good. But he has clearly shown, especially recently, he doesn’t want to play the Hollywood game like other talented, bigger name stars might. Which makes me respect him, even after last spring/summer’s PR problems. He tried it on for size and realized that NO, he didn’t want that.

As much as I love Meryl Streep, did I really think she deserved a nom for Florence Foster Jenkins? No, I did not. But she got it because she was Meryl Streep.

Thank you for saying what I have been saying for years @losille2000 👏👏

Just in terms of the Oscars alone… Some of the most talented, most respected actors in the world have never even been nominated, and even within those that have, the final awards often still don’t do justice to the best piece of work, nor the best performance. I’m not even really talking about Tom and his contemporaries here btw. Many of the most popular and well respected actors I can think of just off the top of my addled little brain: Ralph Fiennes; Gary Oldman; Emmanuelle Riva; Chiwetal Ejiofor; Judy Garland; John Malkovich; Alan Rickman; Deborah Kerr; Peter O’Toole; Idris Elba; Michelle Yeoh; Kenneth Branagh; David Oyelowo (don’t even get me started on that snub by the way..) have never won an Oscar (though some have, at least, been nominated).

So, look back over the best movies you’ve watched in the last twenty years or so. Maybe even look further back… Then look at the movies that actually won the major awards… Then the actors portraying the award-winning roles. Then the actors who lost out… and finally, those never even nominated…

I guarantee it will leave you scratching your head, not only at the lack of diversity, but also at the sheer forgettability of many of the winners.

Hopefully it may also be of some comfort to those who get so worked up about their faves being snubbed (and those measuring talent purely by the amount of awards a person accrues). These actors are in exceptionally good company, and they can at least hold their heads high. Their integrity? Perhaps even higher.

P.s. Look @obsessedwithpretty79 & @purple-daisies-love we’re not the only people having these conversations!

When you consider rejoining the fandom... and then drama breaks out again.

Drama only affects your experience if you allow it to!

So unfollow (or even consider blocking) those who make your experience in a fandom anything less than fun. Blacklist the crap you don’t want to see.

Life is far too short not to enjoy what you want to enjoy. (And I can guarantee for every single drama queen/gossip blog/fandom police out there, there are 100 drama free, happy fans to interact with instead).

do you ever watch a really bad movie just because one actor played in it and you’re like “i hope you’re fucking happy now, i’m doing this for you”

Oh Lord! Where do I even begin??

I not only watched them all, I also bought them all. So, let me see…

* Eden Lake. Not a ‘bad’ movie per say. But would I ever watch it again? Nope. Nuh huh. I’m still traumatised. And that’s before we even get to what they did to Fassy’s Steve.

* The Counsellor. Widely derided. Actually better than some scathing reviews but for me, only truly saved by THAT opening scene.

* Blood Creek. Bad, bad, bad, bad, bad! Like mahoosive plot holes bad.

*Jonah Hex. Even those tattoos can’t save this movie!

*The Light Between Oceans. Controversial, I know. But I just didn’t buy it. At all. (And no. Don’t put words in my mouth, i’m only talking about the film). It left me cold. Read the book instead.

* Exhibition. Sorry Thomas. Though you tried and your estate agent was pretty, the rest? Tiresome at best.

* Armad¡llo. Not a movie, not awful, but not good. Tom’s Toby was in it for all of like, a minute..? Blink and you’ll miss him.

* The Fifth Estate. Meh… moving on…

Having said that, I’ve also discovered some movies that I might otherwise have never sought out, because of the exact same reason:

* Slow West

* A Bear Named Winnie

* Frank

* Only Lovers Left Alive

* Archipelago

* Third Star

Hiddlesweek Day 5: Role You’d Like to See Him In

I have two rather contrasting ideas, neither of which are specifics, rather styles.

The first is a sassy Brit RomCom because if there is one thing we know about Tom, it’s that he has great comedic timing. I’d love to see more of that on screen. I’d personally pair him with either Emily Blunt or Hayley Atwell (but that’s probably just because they are my girl crushes and feature in my fics so there is definitely an element of wish fulfilment going on!)

However, the roles I actually yearn for are the unexpected roles. The ‘Adam’, the ‘Laing’, the proposed ‘Nixon’ in Hard Boiled. I want more of those. More opportunities for Tom to demonstrate his acting chops. To further break away from the perceived posh boy roles. More chances to shock and surprise audiences old and new. Whatever form that takes, I’ll back it. Because I like an actor who takes chances.

And I know Tom has the talent to back it up.

Are there any Tom Hiddleston fans left? Between the jealousy surrounding his new significant other and the hatred that he got his kit off in a photoshoot, my dash is empty. Long time fans, not because of either of these issues, but because they’re tired of seeing the backlash. I’m holding out, because I’d like to get back to the career part. He’s still pretty. He’s still talented. Give me a wave if you’re a hiddles or marvel blog or possibly maybe Broadway, because I need some neutral territory to follow and fill my dash with content I want to see. Thanks!

I plan on being here for a very, very long time. I’ll send you some blog recommendations later, ok?

Don’t you dare leaving me alone with the crazies! (sorry, crazies, I love you too).

👋🏼👋🏼👋🏼. I’m still here @hiddlesnlondon. Still here. Still love Tom. Unfollowing the negative Looking forward to your writing and getting back on track xxx

Still here. Not going anywhere. One of the crazies. :P

Always pro Tom.

@hiddleslondon I’m still here, shuffling my way through ALL the opinions trying my best to just blog as normal. I’m not interested in pap pics (never have been), i’m not interested in people’s personal lives (never have been) and I have no interest in bloggers intentionally or unintentionally antagonising one another because their views of the above differ (never have been). Unfortunately i’ve seen that on both sides of the proverbial fence.

I saw the same thing happen a couple of years ago in the Cumberbatch fandom and frankly it was exhausting. So I made the decision a few days ago to blacklist a certain name in the hope that my dash would pretty much return to normal. Not because of any personal hatred of the person or because i’m jealous, but quite simply because I was never a fan of that person, so there was frankly no need for her to appear on my dash. Who Tom dates is his business. I’m here for his work, humanitarian interests and of course all the pretty...

Now, blacklisting works to some extent, but it is reliant on other bloggers being mindful of how they tag their posts.

I love the blogs (and by extension the bloggers) I follow. And I really don’t want to unfollow people because they want to post about their opinions. I would never tell anyone what they can or can’t post. Have all the discussions you want. Post all the pap pics you want. Post all the videos you want. Post all the love/hatred/indifference (personally not a fan of posting hate but your blog, your rules) of what’s going on. Just maybe tag it?

And for anyone who feels the same as I do, take a deep breath, and download Tumblr Savior. Seriously! It really does make your dash a lot more chilled out if you are simply trying to stay out of all the fucking drama!

Tom Hiddleston at almost 7pm still signing autographs. The venue closed at 7pm but he was still signing when I left and they had already turned most of the lights off. All the celebrities really went above and beyond. Sebastian Stan, Chris Hemsworth and Tom all had to add another autograph session when they were already supposed to be finished. I watched Sebastian, even after signing however many hundreds of autographs, stay late to sign free photos for the volunteers and gave them all big hugs. I don’t have any complaints about any of the celebrities, they all were as friendly as they could be. Ive heard some complaints that they were ‘rude", I think that’s people being disappointed about how rushed everything was and you couldn’t just stand there telling your life story because there was probably 200 people waiting behind you. Wizard World completely mismanaged the entire event. They sold way too many tickets and scheduled each event much too close together. I can’t think of a single event (besides the panels) that wasn’t delayed by at least an hour and some things had to be cancelled/rescheduled. They expected each celebrity guest to be able to do three things at once. I watched Tom Hiddleston do at least 800 photo-ops in a row because they scheduled them all back to back (that doesn’t even count however many photos he took in the morning session). Then as soon as that was over he had to go sign 200+ autographs that lasted until after the show was over when he was supposed to be able to leave at 5. Seriously they worked these celebrities like dogs and seemed more concerned with how much money they could get off the tickets than the logistics of planning the event. I wouldn’t be surprised if most of them never return (I know I wont) but they were still very friendly and tried to have a little chat with everyone (i even made Luke Windsor laugh which could be the highlight of my day because you rarely see him not looking very stern)

It seems like Tom was there at least until nine, judging by Twitter reports.

And congrats on making Luke laugh. He’s a sweetie.

And THIS is why I NEVER judge any guest at a Con on the basis of photos you might see on the internet. In my experience unfortunately this is par for the course at conventions. The organisers milk the cash cow for all it’s worth squeezing in as many ticket holders as possible. It’s hardly surprising some guests run out of smiles at times. Also comparing guests is unhelpful. Everyone is different and responds differently. From what I’ve seen they all tried their damn hardest to be as amenable whilst remaining true to themselves.

My High-Rise thoughts or impression or whatever...

I’m not sure if I need to write all my thoughts down in English or in Russian, but I definitely feel that I need to do this as soon as possible, while my feelings are still fresh. And that’d be a good writing practice, wouldn’t it? Well, first things first, I loved it. They say: ‘you either love it or hate it’, and I prone to ‘love it’.

Although it doesn’t mean that I loved it truly and enjoyed every minute of the screening. And about ten people left the cinema way far before the end. It’s not a movie that everyone can sit through. It was as I had expected: very harsh, brutal and dirty. Very-very dirty. And provocative as Tom said once. Afterwards I felt as if I needed to have a shower. So I chose to have an unhurried stroll through the picturesque streets of old Moscow (I counted about 10 churches on my way, I just found it amusing) instead of going straight to the noisy world of the underground. Moreover I needed to think, to try to make it all clear, to replay in my head what I had just seen. It is a hard film to understand and to find the main idea in. I know that everyone knows this summary to the core, but I needed to make it clear for myself. Yes, it is plain that there are two clans – tenants form the lower and the higher floors – fighting with each other. The first do it for trying to receive all the comforts they have paid for, such as electricity and water. Higher floor tenants try to prove their power in the building and show who is in charge there. Dr. Robert Laing is almost exactly in the middle - 25th floor, so he can’t actually be referred to any of these groups. He’s like in-between. I try not to give away anything, but he turns out to be one of the craziest characters eventually, even if it’s not very clear at the first sight. And also what I can understand is that Ballard in his novel (I still haven’t listen to the whole of it) tried to show what would have become with our society if we hadn’t done anything to change the way it is. High-Rise is the world of people, who forget all the problems at the sight of new supply of alcohol, who don’t care if they regularly party all night long and then have random sexual acts. But it is hard for me to determine what Ben Wheatley tried to say with this film. I mean, every director puts something specific in their work, and I couldn’t find anything apart from what the novel does suggest. There are some plot differences from the book, they are not major, from what I have read. The interesting thing is that I didn’t feel sorry for any of the characters at all. They are all victims of the high life, no matter what floor they live at. I can’t end this saying nothing about the music and cinematography. Both are marvelous and I was stunned. I haven’t seen so well-shoot film for a long time, even though majority of the frames featured very dark things. Music totally matches the film, I couldn’t imagine a better soundtrack. And that Portishead SOS cover is one of the best things in this picture. I heard that there would be no official release, so I recorded it, if anyone is interested (not from the very beginning, though:c). Anyway, what is for sure, that I’ll definitely watch it again. I want to understand it deeper and maybe finally find that special meaning I’m so desperate to find.

I’m a little embarrassed to tag people, but if Tumblr suggests me such a capability, then why not?

Tag away honey I love to hear what people thought of this film.

@magnetobsessed79 You know my feelings on this movie. It’s an instant classic for me. Four viewings later and I still find new angles to enjoy. Laing is the perfect example of a man adapting to his surroundings after suffering a nervous breakdown. And Tom’s understated performance captures that. But at it’s heart is it’s Britishness. And I say that not to disparage any other nationality. I merely say it because in some ways it truly represents the petty, consumer driven society we find ourselves in. One-upmanship and ‘keeping up with the Jones’s’ have long been prevalent. And us Brits can be bloody petty. Woe betide ANYONE who pushes in to a queue! Seriously. So when i watch this movie that is what I see. Not the “Ooh let’s have tea with the Queen” British stereotype that many people outside GB would like to believe exists. But real, flawed (albeit exaggerated) and petty people who hide behind the stiff upper lip when it suits and descend into anarchy given the opportunity… One only has to look back to the rioting a few years back to see how some seemingly respectable members of society teeter on the knife edge and ultimately succumb. And seriously to my lovely overseas friends. NEVER push in a queue here. Because us Brits WILL stand glaring at you with our arms crossed, mumblings about how cheeky you are in a mildly passive aggressive manner…. and then slowly cut back around you… because y'know there are rules about that sort of shit. Okay?! 😉

Wow @thehumming6ird! Four times! But I admit, that if I had an opportunity to see it in the cinema again, I’d do it doubtless. Unfortunately, I haven’t, so all I can do now is to wait for the torrent version. After your interpretation it’ll be a completely different viewing for me. Partially I might be one of those people, who idealize Brits, and I need to get rid of that feeling. Maybe after I finally visit London (or if) my stereotypes will dieXD Anyway, you made me think, I love it!

@geekydreamy Hey there. I hope you know I wasn’t having a go or trying to undermine your opinion. It’s really interesting to see how other nationalities see the movie. And don’t get me wrong. There is a lot to idolise about ANY country and you have every right to continue to do so if you so wish. But equally there WILL be things in popular culture that challenge that. High-Rise is definitely one of those things and that’s what I see when I watch it. I love that it shows us, warts and all (even though it is obviously extreme). There is still a lot to love about Brits in it as well. But at the heart of it is a fantastic performance from all the cast. You may not particularly like them but there is no denying you can’t take your eyes off them! I hope you get to see it again soon 😊 Also. If you do come to the UK (and not just London) seriously remember the queue thing! 😉😂

@thehumming6ird Even though, my opinion is pretty easily undermined, of course I don’t think you tried to do that:D And you are absolutely right there, it is incredibly interesting for me as well to know about other nationalities’ opinion. Not only about High-Rise, but about everything. I read somewhere some time ago, that Joanna Hogg’s films with Tom are kinda ‘entirely British films, that are made for Brits and about Brits’. Can you agree with that? If you saw them, of course. (I’m just in love with “Archipelago”, by the way) Thank you for the queue advice!XD But, I believe, I don’t tend to push in any queues anywhere, thankfullyXDD

@geekydreamy *shifty eyes* I’ve seen everything 😂 I enjoyed Archipelago because of its stunning scenery and simmering tension. And Unrelated is actually a really interesting movie quite apart from all Oakley’s shenanigans. But i struggled with Exhibition if i’m honest. Personally I don’t think they completely represent Brits as a whole. They are again spotlighting a certain class of British society. God I probably sound whiny don’t I? Uhm…  😂
