‘In the script, I remember, it was a short paragraph that said something like “Some neighbouring diners are disgruntled by the activity, Pine settles their nerves with charm. Roper notices and smiles admiringly.”
I don’t know if John Le Carré had read that paragraph in the screenplay… So he took direction, which was that this whole scene in front of him was appalling and disturbing. And, when I approached the table to say: “I’m terribly sorry about all the commotion, is there anything I can do?” ’

I should say, I feel SO proud because I think I first picked up a copy of Empire Magazine when I was ten, to read on the train to see my grandparents in London - with the ‘Classic Scene’ and ‘Pint of Milk’. Before I was an actor, I was a film lover, I was a cinephile. And I still feel like that. Empire Magazine has always fuelled my enthusiasm, and my passion, so i’m deeply, deeply proud and honoured to be accepting this. Thank you very, very much indeed!’

(Just a reminder that only Tom Hiddleston could apologise for winning an award he’d waited longer than any of the other nominees to receive...)
