‘Tom Hiddleston has a great affinity for kind of the bull fighter, very stoic, tall, reaching, almost balletic style. And that speaks very much to him, and how his character and personality are as Loki. And so we built a lot of his stuff off of that. Had a lot of fun with him, you know, exaggerating his movements and flowing. We did some sequences as drills for him obviously using the blades, but for the most part it was about him try to be very graceful, and have Sylvie be... more of a street fighter, because she never lived the God life, she was always hiding, she was always on the run. He comes from this place of grace, and she doesn’t.’- Loyd Bateman, Fight Coordinator on Marvel Studios’ Loki

This episode is really everything I ever wanted from Loki and some I didn’t even know I wanted. :D

This episode is really the best so far. It explained things, but set up so much more and we got so many gifts. All the references to the comics and myths. This whole episode is a treasure trove. It’s like around every corner there’s something to explore and discover. But all these references are put together in a way that keeps you on your toes and guessing.

  • Loki and Sif!!!! And more Asgard. pre-Thor!

That’s dream one coming true. I have a hard time shipping Loki with anyone, but I always had a soft spot for Loki craving Sif’s attention so damn much. And to have that hair-prank in there. :D That’s just one of my favourite stories.  And then Loki being self-aware and explaining himself (probably for the first time honest to anyone in Asgard) - that’s amazing.

  • Loki and Mobius

I really like their banter. I like how hurt they are and how petty.

  • Loki and Sylvie

They are perfect for each other. What better way for a narcissist than themselves? With Sylvie Loki learned so much about himself and she learned to be more honest and trusting. Love yourself. Get to know yourself. And have fun. It’s like they have their perfect partner in crime. At least until they learn to be more open and trusting to others… or until they fall back into their fate.

  • Mobius and Ravonna

Okay, unpopular in this fandom. But I really love how Mobius tries to vow this powerful woman. And then they end up on different sides and Mobius picks his morals over his duty. Love, love, love that.

  • People discovering they work for the bad people and change their paths?
  • People getting betrayed, because people they trusted chose duty over what’s right?

FUCKING YES!

  • Sylvie

I just love her. So far we’ve seen her trickster side, but this time she is allowed to be more vulnerable. And totally badass!!!!

  • Sylvie and Ravonna

Fucking yes! Make it personal.

  • The Time Keepers

Yes, to more comic like images. Like it takes the comics serious. Often they are downplayed or played for fun, but here “Yes, they are weird alien lizards. Deal with it.”

  • OLD MAN LOKI!!!!!!!! and KID LOKI!!!!!! and all the other variants!!!

Yes, yes, yes, to Loki supremacy! And if I’m sure of one thing then that there is no way that all Loki’s want the same and can trust each other. It will be a total mess next week. And I’m totally here for it.

In general I love a great narrative. I love angst and pain, if I know it serves a point. And if I have trust that it makes for an even better revelation. Loki ending up dead? is such a great thing, because afterlife is such an important part in the comics. Like it is just another world for Loki to explore. And I can’t wait. :D

All the Lokis being together and Sylvie being on the other side. It will be a trip.

This whole episode just shows how much Tom knows Loki and loves Loki. It’s like Loki learning and explaining Loki. I love it so damn much. :D

@enchantedbyhiddles you know how excited I was by the mid-cred scene already. We were right about Richard, and I could not be happier. I definitely want to know more about the Croc!Loki and the potential for reptilian Avengers though 😉😂

My only niggle is the suggestion of romantic love between Loki and Sylvie. In theory, I completely understand the concept that someone like Loki would fall in love with themselves. I desperately want Loki to find love. And I LOVE Sylvie. But, for me this particular idea felt way too rushed for a romantic connection (I know that’s Marvel’s thing, but nope, still didn’t get that vibe at all from episode 3). I’m really hoping this isn’t where they’re going with it. He needs to love himself properly first.

My biggest squeal, other than Old Loki et al, was when Hunter-B15 took initiative to question Sylvie. I was screaming, applauding and then crying. Wunmi played that entire scene to perfection 👌🏼

Yay!!! I think next week will be really different with all these other Lokis added to the mix. I hope for chaos of a different kind. :D (Are the ones we saw having some kind of family dynamic in that world? Can you imagine what that looks like? All of them living together? Can’t wait!)

I think I get what you mean with rushed, because that is one of the reasons why I wasn’t ever really able to ship Loki with anyone in the MCU before. To me he never was in a place where he would form that kind of attachement, because he was on a totally different emotional journey.

I have a hard time putting my feelings towards Loki/Sylvie into words. It’s sad that this “ship-question” is dividing the fandom and I dislike some of the rhethorics that some people spew (not you obviously). Whoever wants to ship it can ship it, whoever doesn’t doesn’t. I don’t think that it is that much of a deal, compared to what they already have. To me making it romantic wouldn’t even matter or change how I feel about them feeling towards each other. To me it wouldn’t ever read as a “classical” romance or true everlasting love or anything like it though, even if Marvel would try to push it that way.

To me they have this super strong connection. Call it soulmates or whatever. I think they resonate with each other in a way that no one ever did before and that is difficult to achieve. This connection is there and (at least to me) stronger than a physical bond they might or might not introduce. So no matter how they play it on screen, it doesn’t really play that much into how I perceive it or my reaction to it.

It can be platonic, it can be sibling-like, it can be even romantic, because all of that basically is just a pale comparison in what it does for the development of either character? It’s so beautiful and I treasure it to see Loki that way. Like their relationship (however you define it) also acts as a catalyst for Loki as a character and their relationship with others. In a way they could have done that without introducing her as a character and have this whole Loki-introspective with him on his own. - I guess though that this would be as traumatic as the last episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion. (Whatch it if you are brave, but book some therapy sessions beforehand. Seriously.)

I think without this transformation in Loki - trusting someone, caring for someone, allowing to be vulnerable with someone else, working together, recognising themselves, and falling for what is likable about them - they wouldn’t ever really be able to have any kind of meaningful and lasting relationship with anyone.

TL/DR: I don’t care if they bang or not. I just want Loki to be happy and recognise himself so that he can be more open with other people in the future. Really happy that he has Sylvie for that. To me their relationship is beautiful either way and I cherish them both. :)

@enchantedbyhiddles Franzi, firstly apologies. I had to take a step back for a couple of days. But I meant to reply to you sooner. I loved your breakdown and just wanted to point out a couple of things.

Are the ones we saw having some kind of family dynamic in that world? Can you imagine what that looks like? All of them living together?

Yes! *laughing* I cannot even tell you how excited I am about the next episode! I’m really giddy at the possibility we might get Battleworld. There’s also part of me expecting ep5 to have the clip from the teasers with the ‘Avengers Loki’ turning from the mirror as he says ‘glorious’, and i’m torn between that being another Variant, or our Variant Loki, finally having access once again to his finest Asgardian leather. Either way, that’ll be fun. Plus Croki (as I believe we're now calling the croc/alligator Variant). I have many, many questions!

‘To me making it romantic wouldn’t even matter or change how I feel about them feeling towards each other. To me it wouldn’t ever read as a “classical” romance or true everlasting love or anything like it though, even if Marvel would try to push it that way.’

No, I totally agree! And having watched it again a couple of times, there are nuances throughout the episode that have softened it more for me (if it really does go in the romantic direction, which i’m still not sure it will as I have other theories about that final touch from Loki, I think he might actually have been trying something out 😉)

But yes, that episode - and Lamentis that went before it - felt more of an exercise in self-awareness, acknowledgment and acceptance of one’s own self, one's strengths and weaknesses for both Loki and Sylvie. Impending doom will do that to a person. Loki has allowed himself to be more openly vulnerable with his emotions in this series than at any time since Thor, and while i’d rather he had a lovely day, every day, this has been a huge period of growth for him.

‘In a way they could have done that without introducing her as a character and have this whole Loki-introspective with him on his own. - I guess though that this would be as traumatic as the last episodes of Neon Genesis Evangelion. (Whatch it if you are brave, but book some therapy sessions beforehand. Seriously.)’

Oh. My. God! You did not just compare Loki with Shinji! I get the feeling that the people who hate this series were expecting something along those lines tbh, probably for six episodes. Personally, I will only accept this comparison if we get a Loki High School Variant at the end of all this! It's what we deserve! 😂

But hey, seeing him team up with 4 other Variants is going to be a wild ride in itself (very reminiscent of the Avengers, and totally planned as such by Kate Herron and August Durald Arkapaw apparently)

So who knows? Maybe they’re all ultimately part of Loki's High School...

I’ll leave you with that bombshell.

‘Loki’: Inside the Decision to Have Him ‘Fall In Love With Another Version of Himself’

By Rachel Paige, 30th June 2021

“Two variants of the same being, especially you, forming this kind of sick twisted romantic relationship? That’s pure chaos! That could break reality. It’s breaking my reality right now! What an incredible seismic narcissist! You fell for yourself!”

That’s what Mobius practically yells at Loki in the latest episode of Marvel Studios’ Loki. In trying to get to the bottom of what caused the Nexus Event on Lamentis-1, Mobius starts asking questions and prodding the God of Mischief in just the right way to get a confession out of him, without Loki actually confessing to anything. After putting the pieces together from Loki’s context cues, Mobius arrives at the only logical conclusion: Loki’s fallen for the other Variant, aka Sylvie. “You like her! Does she like you?” teases Mobius.

“That was one of the cruxes of my pitch [for the series], that there was going to be a love story,” head writer Michael Waldron explains to Marvel.com. “We went back and forth for a little bit about, like do we really want to have this guy fall in love with another version of himself? Is that too crazy? But in a series that, to me, is ultimately about self-love, self-reflection, and forgiving yourself, it just felt right that that would be Loki's first real love story.”

Loki and Sylvie’s love story has an apocalyptic beginning since that’s where the two first begin to bond. Trapped on a moon on the verge of total destruction, the two are forced to work together to find a way out of this situation, only to have it completely fail before their eyes. Feeling defeated, Sylvie wonders if Lokis are always destined to lose?

Loki reassures her that while they might lose, they don’t die — they survive. He goes on to call Sylvie “amazing” for how she almost took down the TVA on her own, and it’s clear from the look on his face that even though they’ve only been together a short while, Loki’s already come to admire and respect her. As the moon literally crumbles around them, Sylvie places a hand on Loki’s arm, and that’s when it happens: A branch on the Sacred Timeline. These two Lokis are having a moment they were never supposed to have, which as Mobius puts it, is “pure chaos.”

“The look that they share, that moment, [it started as] a blossoming friendship,” continues Waldron. “Then for the first time, they both feel that twinge of, ‘Oh, could this be something more? What is this I'm feeling?’ These are two beings of pure chaos that are the same person falling in love with one another. That's a straight-up and down branch, and exactly the sort of thing that would terrify the TVA.”

Thankfully this branch also leads to the two variants being located on Lamentis-1; unfortunately, their rescue leads to them immediately thrown into captivity at the TVA.

But what happened on Lamentis-1 clearly affects both of them in different ways, with Loki slowly coming to grips with the fact that he does have feelings for Sylvie — even though she’s “difficult, irritating, and tries to hit [him] all the time.”

This is only made more pronounced after Loki finds himself trapped in a time loop with Lady Sif back on Asgard shortly following his past-self committing a cruel prank and cutting off her hair. Sif not only beats him up (and rightfully so), but tells him many times, “You deserve to be alone and you always will be.” For the first time, Loki realizes he doesn’t want to be alone, and that there might be someone out there for him, who he can connect with on another level.

Even more so than Loki just realizing he is capable of loving someone other than himself, Loki is finally willing to accept himself and all his flaws. “I don't think Loki's relationship with himself has been very healthy,” Tom Hiddleston explains. “Trying to accept those aspects of himself, which he's been on the run from, was a way of thinking about that in a really interesting way. Also, Sylvie's not Loki. Sylvie is Sylvie. That's interesting, too. I'm really excited to see what people make of it.”

As Mobius notes, it might just be a case of extreme narcissism, but it also makes complete sense for the character.

“Who’s a better match for Loki than himself?” director Kate Herron chimes in. “The whole show is about identity. It's about him, and he is on a very different path, and he is on a different journey. He sees things in Sylvie that he is like, ‘Oh, I've been there. I know what you feel.’ But she's like, ‘Well, I don't feel that way.’ And I think that was the kind of fun thing about it. She is him, but she's not him. They've had such different life experiences. So just from an identity perspective, it was interesting to dig into that.”

“When Loki meets Sylvie, he's inspired solely by curiosity,” reveals Hiddleston. “He wants to talk to her and understand her and try to discern what was similar about their experiences, and what was different. He keeps asking her questions because he wants to see if his experience was also her experience. I think he realizes, and she realizes, that while they're the same, they're not the same.”

Herron was careful setting up this relationship. “It was just about giving it the space to breathe and digging into it in a way that felt earned,” she explains.

Considering partnerships are 50/50, credit has to be paid to Sophia Di Martino, taking on the role of Sylvie and becoming someone who can match Loki’s own energy and chaos.

“I think something that Sophia captured really beautifully is that she’s in a different space,” continues Herron. “She's almost where Loki was in Thor in some ways where she's dealing with a lot of pain. For different reasons, obviously. It was really interesting having her in a different headspace of a different Loki.”

When production was shut down at the start of the pandemic, Herron kept working, putting together what had already been filmed. She realized that “there were tonally some things that were coming to the surface” between Loki and Sylvie that she could explore deeper.

“As we were cutting it together in the studio, everyone was, ‘Oh, this [relationship] is really cool. Let's dig into that more,’" shares Herron. “When we went back to filming, we added or tweaked scripts basically to [emphasize it].”
