“If a work of art can have a thesis, Receiver’s is this: our heavily circumscribed planes of existence may be pockmarked with minor frustrations and gutted with major tragedy, but, for now at least, humanity appears alone in the universe, and the stars are winking only at us.”

"For Are You Rea (1964-68), the artist treated magazine pages as negatives, in essence, developing them so as to allow each side of the original page to bleed through to the other. The unexpected combinations that arose—surprising for their aesthetic and sociological revelations alike—inaugurated Heinecken’s adoption of juxtaposition and layering as key elements to his artistic process."

In 1965, Robert Heinecken began using transparent film to explore different kinds of juxtapositions. This early example, which depicts a child aiming a toy gun at a doll of John F. Kennedy, uses a found image from an advertisement that appeared in a Los Angeles newspaper shortly after Kennedy’s assassination. Heinecken later noted that this advertisement “started this whole idea of using already produced material for the source of my ideas and my work.”
